For a kid learning a shed load in such a short space of time takes it toll on a youngsters mind let alone body for having such a physical job added to it, I remember struggling so bad with everything, earning not knowing if I’m actually good enough or if I’ll know enough and that drained me mentally worrying myself so much added with the strain of having to always be alert taking in as much as possible. The longer you’re in the game the more things are second nature and the mental side of the job becomes a lot more easing so I fully understand the position Adam was in especially coming towards the end of his apprenticeship and the stress of that. Hats off to you both for how you handled it.

I was the same mate, I'm a plumber I was taught in the commercial environment. I'd be working 100mph mon-fri and by the end of the week I'd be on my ass in work struggling. Then my employer actually said to me work at a steady pace in which you are able to work at.

@@adamw225 - I’ll never forget just how tough in every way those apprentice years were and will never take the struggle away from those who go through it. A lot of people qualify and forget all about how tough times were and how they started. I always make sure the apprentices get the respect and patience they deserve, people expect them to be able to do everything at the speed they can.

Don’t get me wrong it’s the best way to learn and become a well rounded tradesman but it’s hard enough for 3 years let alone 6 😅 everyone started at the same stage yet most tradesman seem to think a 1st year apprentice should be doing and knowing what they do.

I just want to add one thing to the many other replies based on how hard you have both been working recently. Keep an eye on Adam for burnout. It rarely comes on quickly and as he is young he may not have experienced it before so won't necessarily know how to spot and deal with it. With your own experiences which you've shared you are well equipped to spot it and can offer practical advice and support.

Fun times 10 gauge handling maybe 60 amps if you include the AC running while they work in the house running at the same time.

As an apprentice the act of “sleeping in” and consequences of it are in itself a learning curve , I’d say just advising of what could potentially happen when he’s qualified and employed/self employed. It could lead to loss of work , earnings and clientele all for what ? An extra few mins kip ? Biggest question should always be “was it worth it ?”

It comes down to how much worth you think he has and how often this kind of thing happens. If it only happens towards the end of a crazy work week then obviously he is being over worked but if it happens on a regular then he gets fired. The owner of the business has to take some responsibility for how hard they are making their employees work regardless of their particular work ethic. What he is worth even as an apprentice will be evident within the first few days of his employment and helps a ton in deciding whether you or him is to blame.
I'm always trying to look at the situation from my employees viewpoint before I make a decision on that particular situation, the employee will always see their position different from the owners because there is a difference gain/loss from an owner to employee.

I think this sort of over sleeping can happen to anyone, as long as it's not a regular event. Then it's not a problem.
If it's a regular event then it's bye bye.

At his age you normally have to work in a few lost days a year to hangovers and the like. He’s learning and as long as he’s not taking the piss id do like what you did don’t worry about it
