My Dad shaped and glassed a homemade surfboard for me in our garage and I learned to surf on that sad sack of a board (sorry Dad, love you, you tried). So I bought my first ‘real’ surfboard from the Lightning Bolt shop on Kapiolani Blvd in 1971. 7’0” rounded pintail shaped by Bill Stonebraker. Cost $120.00. Orange bottom and rails, red pinstripes, white deck, orange bolt, glassed in fin. Beautiful work of art! Ridden mostly at Ehukai, Pupukea and Gas Chambers. Also at Populars and Makaha, before it was stolen from inside my car at Pokai Bay, Waianae many years ago. I missed that board dearly, may the surf gods wreak ‘bachi’ on whoever stole it! 🤙🏽

Yeah Gerry I was shaping for Island Surfboards in PR and everyone wanted bolts on their boards! It was a special time. I was on the NShore early/mid 70’s living with Bernie at Sunset

*It's real good seeing Jerry, inspiring.*
*I look up and see; this video was released on my birthday........wadayaknow!*
*I'm 62, been in the water all my life, started surfing in 1970, so I can relate to everything Mr. Lopez is talking about.*
*My bosses knew if the waves were good, I wouldn't be coming in.*
*One time a weeks vacation turned into a month and a week, because all of January 1985 was insane in the islands. (my boss was OK with that)*
*BTW; I had a lightning bolt on my Patrillo, a Randy Lewis, and on a McConnell surfboard. (LOL, they were very cool looking)*
*Thank you, and sorry Jerry, I couldn't acquire one of your boards, demand was too high at the time.*
*Big waves (and time) have taken a toll on my body, I can't surf like I used to, and small waves don't blow my skirt up.*
*You're making me rethink getting back into it.*
    *Thanks!*

Nice one on so many levels. Captured so much of the awesome spirit of the times out on the reef. Mahalo fo’ dat, Gerry, and the wide soul surfer perspective. Love the nod to Duke Kahanamoku at the end. I remember his convertible Cadillac (or Lincoln) with the surfer hood ornament parked on Kalakaua Avenue all the time by the surfboard rental racks when I was a Waikiki paipo wall rat. He left it open top down and unlocked, never got a ticket, nobody ever stole anything out of it. Total respect. For you too. Aloha nui!

...actually I think maybe once someone stole the surfer hood ornament off the Duke’s car but word got out fast and it was quickly returned. An amazing time.

Kinda sad to hear that Gerry’s Dad hesitantly accepted him as a surfer. It sounds like he was quiet successful economically despite surfing not fitting the mold of success. I think it’s a lot harder for the vast majority now who fall in love with surfing, and never make anything of themselves in the industry or the, “real” world, as a result of so much dedicated to surfing, and the lifestyle. Even if you go pro and get on tour, what percentage of surfers, afterwards, have economically viable lifestyles in surfing? Gerry is a global icon. I grew up in the 80s, and remember how the 70s lingered into that decade. It may have been peripheral, but certainly influential.

In 1977 i was a Pearl Harbor submarine sailor. One of my shipmates was a Kaiua hometown boy. The boss told him "Why dont you take him and teach him to surf?" We went to Haleiwa one morning. Gerry showed up with some guys in a 72 Chevy Blazer K5. I couldnt paddle and couldnt surf. I cut Gerry Lopez off on a wave. The guy like disowned me because i cut Gerry Lopez off. I was from Alabama. I had no idea who he was
