Thanks. I'm quite enjoying this! If the government promised to teach this in school (at all levels!), and to educate & pay teachers accordingly, I'd happily pay more in taxes to support it. Can't say that for just anything. tavi.
In the example “All swans are white” you wouldn’t have to find every swan in the world, you’d just have to find one swan that is not white. Just saying
That suggests until we don’t find a swan that is not white, we should go with the assumption that all swans are white. But there could be more swans out there that could be a different colour. So to definitely prove that all swans are white, we need to find all swans that are indeed white.
How is the premise: "All Swans are white", different from a conclusion of the same?. Surely it's both as it's a standalone statement. Or can someone have a premise separate from a conclusion so it's not really an argument your're analyzing? Pretty confusing!
Beauweir the premise would be the quintessential essence of a thing. I guess that’s ideal definition of a valid premise. This is my opinion, but I think it’s what Aristotle thought. I not have the patience nor the brains to understand a guy like him, but that’s my dumbed down, common man, “common sense,” which is not at all common anymore, take. Also, the swans are white is a true premise, but it’s not an argument, so it’s not a conclusion...it’s a true premise. Unless you want to go down the which came first thing that I’ve Ben seeing, deductive reason or inductive reason. You seem to need inductive thought to determine a true premise to begin with, but once we have irrefutably true premises, we can have irrefutable true conclusions every time.
That point at the end about reaching a conclusion. Saying ‘so what? Why should we suffer too’ not being a good enough reason. Is that because we have to state the relevancy? What point is being made sorry can someone explain
I took "that's not a good enough reason" to be the rest of the quote from classmate #2. i.e. "So what? Why should we suffer too...That's not a good enough reason." (i.e. those arguments may be true, but classmate #2 is saying they aren't sufficient reasons for us to not have the review session)
