Love this. I've been surfing Trinidad head and state beach since 2001, that's my happy place. I'm actually planning on hitting you up for my first boat. I moved back to Santa Cruz from Humboldt a few years back, and caught the fishing bug again. Watching Greg Blanchard's channel, tuned me into you guys. Best, honest kayak reviews I've seen. Thanks guys
Neither my Epic 18X nor my CLC 17 would have liked those conditions. They prefer to be pointed somewhere far away while changing direction as little as possible. Sort of like a train.
Just got my new Sterling Illusion, purple deck with splatter I think it was on the display rack in your last video! This will be my 4th sea kayak. I have only paddled them around the bay due to my mostly going alone and not learning a lot of skills. My last boat was a used Triderace Explore and I did take a rolling class with Helen Wilson. Learned a bunch but didn't get a roll in the class. So with this boat I can just paddle around the bay but it is such a capable boat I hope to work on a lot of skills both myself and maybe with some instruction. There is not much sea kayaking activity in Southern California so just wondered if you knew of any groups, training etc. in my area.
@@BrackishFilms Thanks Neil! I do know about CKF they use to be all around LA/OC but now seem to just be active in Oxnard/Ventura. I am from Orange County but recently moved to the Temecula wine country which is a bit inland and about equal distance from Orange County (Newport Beach) and San Diego. I will check out the San Diego group if they are active that may be the closest for me.
Nice video, my friend! Lovely kayaking! Best way to relax, haveing some whater adventure isn't it? 😉 The nature Is amazing, too.. What area is that? Enjoyed watching a lot! Cheers from Russia, mate , and how about visiting my channel as well? I've got something to share about floating, camping, and other! Anyway, best wishes in all your plans and beginnings! Kind regards, Yuriy!
I live close to a Trinidad, it’s cool to see the kayaks on the water. Been thinking about a fishing/peddle kayak for some time now. I’d. E one of those sea sick guys so I’ll stick to the lagoons and bay. lol
Anyone can help me what type of kayak I can get that can be on lakes, rivers and ocean??? It’s going to be my first kayak but I want to do everything 😉thanks for the videos it got me hook into kayaking 💖
I use a Jackson Karma RG. there is one in this video. I use it on all kinds of water. From ocean to lakes, and white water camping multi day trips. The longest time I've been self contained is 5 days. I have single day tripped this boat 56 miles. I love it, and will most likely be buying a couple more.
I use a Jackson Riviera, but haven't taken it in the ocean just the bay, Oregon. Mostly lakes. I mounted some rod holders for fishing, but light enough to carry overhead to the lake river. I'd just check Craigslist locally, tons of people bought them in summer, sold out the stores, now can't store them. I keep a search link handy in my area for an upgrade for winter lake fishing... My 2 cents.
I purchased a couple of aventura 125's for my girlfriend and I about 3 months ago, and we still have not received them. The kayak shop keeps apologizing and offering refunds, but we just want our kayaks, damnit! Summer is over, and warm weather is fleeting. It's not looking good for us..
Headwaters Kayak, we’re trying our best! Our local shop has been super nice and has given us updates every time they find something out. Not their fault! Just poor timing.
Hey, Dan. Bought my Dagger Stratos from your Redding store a couple of months ago. I've been doing all lake paddling but would love to get into sea kayaking. Where do I start? I'm in the Sac area. I don't think I want to go solo my first time out. Love your videos. Thanks.
Taking lessons is huge. Finding a paddling group that trains for ocean paddling is important too. And dry suit! If you plan to paddle the coast get a dry suit.
Your videos are so great man! Definitely keep it up. I'm thinking about buying a kayak under 500$ 500 but willing to spend up to $600 what are your suggestions 10-12 foot preferable thanks! And i'll be using this for fishing/ recreationally use.
Another video from Dan that conveys the essence of the story and experience in a concise thoughtful way.
Thanks for the kind words.
Nice video. I plan to paddle Trinidad tomorrow. Wish I had a crew instead of going solo, lol.
Cool 👍
Sweeeet!!!
My uncle was the lighthouse keeper at Trinidad Head in the late 60s when he was in the coast guard
Sea kayaking looks like fun

Grand Illusion carbon looks great! What kind of cargo space does that have? Or is it more for day paddling and playing?
No the Grand has a ton of storage. I've taken one on a 10 day trip and had room for more beer!
We never see your wife kayak does she kayak too? Another good video I enjoy them a lot. It has actually made me want to start kayaking at age 63!
She paddles flat water. She was with me last night.
@@HeadwatersKayak that's awesome! I think it'll be flat water for me too!
Can you do this with a recreational kayak?
NO way. You’d die.
ugh I would get so sick lol

I’m not familiar with the SoCal groups. I know there are a lot of folks that go to Baja but I don’t know their group name. I’ll look into it.
Jim, where in SoCal? UCLA has an independent sea kayak offshoot. San Diego has SDKC. Ventura area is where the California Kayak Friends (CKF) launch.

I have a 12’ Hobie Mirage and a 10’ perception pescador - been out at Bodega. Would these kayaks do okay at Trinidad on calm day?
Yes in the bay on a calm day. Still need to wear a wetsuit.
So cool,
Cool my home town!
Some of my most favorite spots.
I like that wooden paddle you have. Where can I get one?

Would scare the crap outa me... Might have to give the sea a try sometime!
Nice look into sea kayaking.
Thanks Dan 😊
Great video sir thank you for sharing cheers🍻🍻🍻
Have you paddled NDKs? If so, which do you prefer. I’m an inland kayaker and want to take on the ocean! Still doing my homework on what boat to buy.
Awesome video. Too advanced for me, but very cool to watch
