Madeira is favourite holiday destination for me and I've flown there many times. I have a reasonable knowledge of aviation as I hold a private pilot's licence. I've really enjoyed all of the approaches with spectacular scenery and the landings have been very normal. The extension to the runway over the ocean is a masterpiece of civil engineering.
Hey swiss I'm actually from Madeira believe it or not and it's really nice you did a video on it because out of any dangerous airport you chose the Madeiran one it's really nice of you
@@MadeiraAirport i also watch you guys a lot and it probably doesnt look dangerous for you while filmling but aroud four years ago my flight was delayed due to the ice on the engines to they had to clean it off and i had the chance to speak to the pilot and i asked him how challenging is it to actually land there he said that the professional pilots had to do a lot of training to actually be able to land there but anyway i love your vids and please keep doing because i love your vids and swiss aswell.
"And for some reason reverse thrusters didn't come out..." They won't come out unless main gear is on the ground on both sides. There was a crash in Warsaw in 1993 (Lufthansa 2904) which happened during rain storm and in tailwind/crosswind conditions, when Airbus A320 landed on left gear only and had the right main gear up for 9 seconds after touchdown. The reversers deployed way too late to stop the plane. As it turned out, the Lufthansa pilots at that time were unaware of this particular safety feature on Airbus planes, so they simply didn't know why their plane was not stopping.
Swiss, thanks for making this video. I’m portuguese and I’ve been to maideria. I took the airport and it was very nice. When I saw you upload the Corvo video, I knew you had to maideria next. Thanks.
There's a car park under them, you need to drive there, park next to one of them, there's more than a hundred, and look up. You could land an aircraft carrier on them. You literally don't even feel the airplane from below.
Fun fact:‐ Captain Joe has flown to this airport and he's done a video of the landing too. Plus he's one of the few lucky pilots certified to land here
I just watched a TheFlightChannel video documenting an incident at the Hong Kong airport you’re talking about. For most of the plane’s approach I’m thinking “approaching what? That big hill? Those buildings? Where the freakin’ runway?” Then the plane turns and “oh my, wtf is this nonsense?”
Good video with some great facts. I've been to Madeira many times and the landing can be very hairy. Often the plane can just drop in altitude as the wind hits it off the mountain on the way in. It can also feel like you're coming into land sideways because of the wind shear and that's in days when they will actually let planes land. It's definitely one of the most dangerous landing in Europe if not the world.

Reagan National (DCA) though it has a longer runway, has a similar location, jutting out into a body of water (river) with pilots forced to do evasive maneuvers before landing and after takeoff, especially landing from and taking off to the North. The largest plane to use it regularly is the 757, though in 1998 a DC10 landed there in 1988 in an emergency. Would like to see if an Antonov An-225 could use it.
