Hey Matt, I appreciate it mate! Yeah, I figured Aussies also deserve personal finance info on YT so definitely will be making many more Aussie finance related videos in the coming years 🇦🇺🫡
Once you reach your emergency fund say of 20k you just sit it in there and collect the Intrest? And never touch it unless for a rainy day? This has really inspired me to build up my savings!
Yes! That's the plan. You don't want to leave too much in the bank since inflation will eat away at the value but having enough there as an emergency fund is a life changer. You'll feel so much better mentally knowing you are covered in case of bad luck.
I would 100% put the emergency fund in an offset account if you have a home loan. Doing this is a guaranteed tax free return vs leaving it in a high interest savings account. However, I would create a separate offset account and name it EMERGENCY FUND just to remind yourself not to touch it
Hey Brian, speaking emergency funds, mine is in a HISA with Ubank, but they just emailed saying several changes were coming including tiered bonus interest and a minimum $500 per month. Looks like we could use another brilliant Brian HISA review!
Hey Rob, yeah absolutely. Unfortunately, I filmed and edited this video before the changes! I'm eagerly waiting for them to announce the tier interest rates. I'll definitely do another review once we get more info and perhaps even a better similar alternative.
1st Tier 100k, 2nd tier 100 -250k. sounds like they will basically switch it to align with ING and others, nobody offers upto 250k at 5.1%. Luckily this probably wont affect most. who has 250k sitting in a HISA, such a waste.
@@hairypawter8475 interesting comment. Some retirees have a cash bucket of 5yrs of cash. Out of curiousity, where would you park $250k cash that you wanted ready access to?
@@robsalvv5853 well before July 1st, Ubank, after that though, id spread it out between ING, MEbank, Hiver etc, banks with the 5.5% up to 100k. If i had more than a couple hundred, then Macquarie which goes up to 1 million, but you only get 4.75% on that. but even then, not sure why a HISA is preferable to a dividend ETF that pays monthly.
Thanks mate. You can find these information everywhere brother. My channel, other YT videos, google, blogs, articles. I do have a tax video about shares, which I'll link below and have heaps more tax videos coming out soon. th-cam.com/video/9t13QmDnbo0/w-d-xo.html
I think the $500 deposit and not being able to direct debit from save account is no big deal since you shouldn’t be taking money out from the account as an emergency fund anyway. However, let’s see what they do with the tier list. I’ll come back and comment once they announce it.

I opened UBank just to find out they will not allow external deposits from 1 of July 2024 and 500 monthly deposit minimum. My plan was to keep just a savings account there, now need to close it 😂
Oh sorry about that. Unfortunately this video was filmed and edited before the announcement. However, as an emergency fund, I don’t find it to be a deal breaker since you shouldn’t be paying for everyday things with your emergency fund account. If anything, it removes another layer of temptation to access the money.
I tried opening an account with ubank but unfortunately I couldn’t because i have a single name (i.e., no surname/family name). Has anyone else faced this problem ?
Yeah, sorry about that. Unfortunately, this video was filmed and edited a week ago and was scheduled for release before even the Ubank announcement. However, I don't think $500 will make a huge different for most especially if you can just transfer it back out straight away. Also, having direct debit restrictions on the savings accounts won't really impact Ubank's purpose as an emergency fund. Since you're not supposed to be taking money out of there anyway for every transactions. If anything, it's better since there's less temptation to spend the money.

Hi Bryan, any thoughts on keeping the emergency fund in a redraw or offset account for those who have a home mortgage?
I would 100% put the emergency fund in an offset account if you have a home loan. Doing this is a guaranteed tax free return vs leaving it in a high interest savings account. However, I would create a separate offset account and name it EMERGENCY FUND just to remind yourself not to touch it
Would that be the same for a “redraw” account? I understand that there slight differences between an offset vs redraw account?
