I'm high functioning on the ASD spectrum and this has nothing to do with ASD. People with ASD are not mentally sick although a lot of us can acquire that. What happened here has more to do with mental disorder and lack of morality in my opinion.
a mental illness is a mental illness, not because he can dress himself, feed himself. it doesnt mean he isnt mentally ill. this was a failure to manage his illness by their care provider. he lost impulse control either he's having a crisis of that sort or their care providers failed him to taught him how to manage.
A Police officer who has never dealt with someone outside her comfort zone, in Scotland we dealt with this on a daily basis, with people who never had been brought up with "Normal People" they left the service very quickly.
I grudgingly agree with assessment. I have personal experience with young adults on the spectrum... and it’s a fact that their hand movements and mannerisms draw most people to falsely conclude they are mentally unstable or on drugs. This officers’ approach set in motion the chain of events that happened, although I don’t blame her. There is a large population of people on the spectrum among us in society, and police departments need to train with this in mind or tragedies like this will keep happening.
Neal, I have very much enjoyed your insightful commentary while Mike has been out with COVID. I know this video hit close to home with both you and John and I'll be praying for both of you.
Any mental health noob that is a harm to others should be locked up in a mental health asylum. Its unfortunate but when they are released in public, they become a threat to others.
Retired firefighter here. Worked in the largest department in Western Canada. I remember clearly when our crew was attacked by a man having drug induced psychosis. He pulled the fire alarm on the 14th floor and waited for us around the corner with a very large knife. I remember the look on his face as he lunged at us screaming. You knew full well this person wasn't well. We scrambled back into the stairwell and chose to fight him through the steal door. We held him off until police converged on him and took him down. It took 5 cops to take him down and he was probably 140 pounds. Scary business. Having said that, I was extremely surprised this officer so casually walked up to this person without any weapon in hand at all. Not only that but she sandwiched herself in between two cars at close proximity. This seems like a training issue more than her incompetence. I've seen the worst of the worst drug induced psychotic episodes. They are very scary. But you need to give these people space and work in slowly. There is no easy way to do it. The saddest part of this whole thing is that in my opinion this was 100 percent preventable. This didn't need to happen. Very sad. I hope many people learn from this. Cheers, thanks for the great content.
I love you guys, your analyses are always concise and extremely instructive. Sending love and support to you, Mike, from your brothers in Montreal, Canada.
I don't think being a police officer is for her, she literally almost started crying. It takes a certain someone to do this job and sad to say she needs to find a new career
John and editors, I noticed some sound issues where the lower decible levels of your voice were cut out. It’s an editing issue where the lower threshold that is set to attempt to balance the audio in the video is set higher than the lower decible level of your speech, so it’s getting cut out. You can hear it twice in the intro, specifically when you say New York after Saranac Lake, and a couple times throughout the video. Hope this helps the editors!
Tbh mic issues are pretty common here. Sometimes quality is super bad, other times it's this issue. I've just learned to ignore it as I care more about the lessons that bad mic quality.
Be careful what you wish for indeed. Crazy that she wanted him to pull out the knife himself especially without her being prepared for what may happen as a result. Guarantee she won't make that mistake again though. As always thanks for the lessons.
Agree 100% the descalation was horrible, also It seemed like she hesitated or froze, she fell over screaming and didn't even draw her weapon until the guy was already shot by the other officer. She could've been killed, thankfully the other officer was there. She shouldn't be in that line of work.
Maybe because he was so close to the door with patrons entering and exiting, and was worried he may attack one she felt the need to get his guy into custody faster than normal. Not justifying anything, just diving into what may have been her though process. Great breakdown and lesson as per usual, and love the new format.

Autistic people that are physically violent are extremely dangerous. The officers did everything right by account.
Fun fact: all four residents of Saranac Lake, NY were involved in this call. Another fun fact (and this time I'm not joking): there are only five patrol officers on the Saranac Lake police department, and four administrative officers, including the chief of police. They serve two counties and and all four 'major' towns within those counties: Harrietstown, North Elba, St. Armand, and Saranac. The Village of Saranac, with a population of around 4500, is the largest community in the Adirondack State Park....making Saranac the largest community for a couple hundred miles in any direction, lol. The whole area - especially Saranac and the very-near-by Lake Placid, is very affluent. And no, Lake Placid, just East of Saranac, is not larger by population, despite what you might think if you drive through the area (it's roughly a third of the size). I don't think that either of these officers have given much thought to the idea that they may have to respond to a call like this at some point in their careers. I know the vast majority of calls these officers receive is for wilderness rescues and wildlife intervention.
now that is wild!! Saranac is more of a tourist town that isn't heavily populated so i can see why they have different officers in different counties coming together.

An honest question. Does being on the spectrum mean that you have no moral compass and don't know the difference between right and wrong? Like do you think it's ok to stab someone, and charge a police officer with a knife? I don't think the officer handled the situation well at all, but does being on the spectrum excuse his actions in any way?

I'm high functioning on the ASD spectrum and this has nothing to do with ASD. People with ASD are not mentally sick although a lot of us can acquire that. What happened here has more to do with mental disorder and lack of morality in my opinion.
Meltdown possibly
@@patrickhenry8425 I hate that since I'm on the spectrum myself
a mental illness is a mental illness, not because he can dress himself, feed himself. it doesnt mean he isnt mentally ill. this was a failure to manage his illness by their care provider. he lost impulse control either he's having a crisis of that sort or their care providers failed him to taught him how to manage.
So much for sending in social workers.
Mike, pull through strong my man and in good health to you and yours.. ✅💯💪🏾

A Police officer who has never dealt with someone outside her comfort zone, in Scotland we dealt with this on a daily basis, with people who never had been brought up with "Normal People" they left the service very quickly.
I fkFeel very sorry for all parties involved. As the parent of 2 adult children with autism I can understand the situation from both sides.
All love over here!! Get well soon Mike!!!!
Speedy recovery Mike!! Wishing you well pardner
Thank GOD she had backup. Crumpled under pressure.
God bless those officers
The key lessons here is to always maintain a 30 feet reactonary distance especially where perp/suspect is reported to have a knife.
Don't think he would have given up the knife. Too calm after just stabbing someone. It was going to happen.
Weird observation: How can that officer be as effective with such long fingernails?
Yeah, she handeled it like a pro.
This is a great video to show in court when this country is confused about equal opportunity on the front lines defending this country
I love you guys, your analyses are always concise and extremely instructive. Sending love and support to you, Mike, from your brothers in Montreal, Canada.
Hope your feeling better Mike. Miss seeing you!!👍👍✝️✝️✝️🇺🇸🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I like how you brought the quality of your videos up in the last few months. Great job.
Mike, get well quickly. I had the Covid a couple times and it wasn’t good, but God brought me through it.

She shouldn't be in that line of work.
loved what you said about building repour before trying to influence behavior. Doing good, important work with this channel :)
Maybe because he was so close to the door with patrons entering and exiting, and was worried he may attack one she felt the need to get his guy into custody faster than normal. Not justifying anything, just diving into what may have been her though process.
Great breakdown and lesson as per usual, and love the new format.
My thought exactly.

Feel better Mike!
What we forget is... A person trained in dealing with neuro divergent people has already rocked up and that went sideways. The only thing the officer should have thought at that stage is self protection. On that basis, asking to get the knife out was a bad idea.
Hey John! I’m still loving this channel! Keep up the A1 work.
Wishing Mike a speedy recovery!
-As soon as its clear the suspect doesn't want to give up his knife, distance must be created defensive position should follow...

Who is Mike, and what's wrong with him?
@@PCProphecy mike is the co-host, Normally he is with john in the video in person.
I'm praying for Mike and his family. This case is tough, but given the unfolding events, the officer had to stop the threat.
Hope she learns about knife fighting, how they work, and closing distance. If you think someone has a knife, create distance. Anyone who uses a knife know knives are to be felt not seen. She’s lucky he didn’t totally know the script or that knife would have been in her way before she could grab that gun. Glad she’s alive but she seems WAY out of her element. If that other cop wasnt there she would have been dead. I thought they knew each other honestly with the range of danger she placed herself in immediately. She seemed to give full trust without question.

crazy how someone so devoid of common sense is allowed to join the force but it’s not uncommon 😕
Absolutely a tough situation, but she definitely didn't do herself any favors getting that close to the patient and commanding he hand her the knife. Glad she's okay. So she gets that close knowing he has a knife, then instead of backing up and drawing on him, she just backs up and screams noooo, then she draws after he is already down. If she didn't have backup, she wouldve been dead
I have 18yrs of experience working with special needs people and he knew what he doing. These people act without thinking and have little to no worries about hurting others without antecedent.
This is some very important and interesting context. Thank you
But then there’s that one call 🤨
Mike get better soon!
Did anyone else see her nails and immediately think this was the kind of cop she might be 🫣
She really needs to find a new profession. Smh

Have you seen the Korean lawyer Wu series?
John, I’m just commenting on this hoping it helps you and others see it. I think that a conversation on this topic would be useful as training for police. Definitely worth looking in to.
@Craig West I know the differince between wrong and right. But MY case I am high functioning however others that are low function and need 24 hour care may not know
@@zeinop thank you for the reply. I wasn't trying to offend or anything, I was genuinely trying to understand the thought process of someone in that position/situation. It's sad that this situation ended the way it did 😔

Informative video as always. Mike get better.
This video was right on point. She knew the guy may have had a knife. The right thing to do would have been to contain him then at least try and de escalate. This didn’t have to end up that way. I’m lucky where I work there is a ton of training in mental health and de escalation. We also have MCIT units most days and looking to expand. So sad. 🙏🏻
You keep trying to portray him as some innocent child, but you have to keep in mind he just stabbed somebody and maybe he looked just as innocent as he was stabbing that person too?
