    THANK YOU for this- I have been trying to identify my nest by listening to the sounds and I have finally found it! It's definitely a robin's nest. I never realized just how hard they work. The chicks are fed every 3-5 minutes in the nest I have. Mom and dad come and go ALL day long and the babies always cry when they return with food. It's just amazing!

    • @TVsIsrael

      Absolutely! I’m glad you could find that out with my video. They do work hard to feed their babies! I find nests all around but never quite this close, a great peak into nature!

    Actually the chicks don't fully digest all of their food so it's quite nutritious for Mom. I means that she ends up eating everything she catches eventually and when it's just the Mom doing the feeding the extra calories help.

    • @TVsIsrael
      @TVsIsrael  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I set mine up when the mother was gone, she flew away when I got close. GoPro set to widest angle in waterproof housing a few inches away. I left it out there for over 20 minutes. A clamp or tripod or some extension is helpful to get close but keep a distance. Hope you get a good shot of the birds if they come back!

  • @helloleonhere
    @helloleonhere 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Birds will eat the nestlings’ fecal sacs (their poop) to keep the nest clean and because it contains nutrients that the nestlings themselves are unable to have. Sometimes birds will toss the fecal sacs out though, especially as the nestlings mature (I could be a bit off in my information, but I do know the birds will eat the fecal sacs to clean the nest or sometimes toss them out)

    • @TVsIsrael
      @TVsIsrael  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @elijahculper5522
      @elijahculper5522 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You’re right. Generally really young chicks won’t be able to fully process the nutrients in their food yet, so the fecal sac will have a lot of protein in it that the parents will eat. After a few days, the fecal sacs will stop being nutritive and the parents will regurgitate them away from the nest.

      Yeah. The OP is serious. It’s called a fecal sac instead of a diaper though. For the first few days, it is still protein-rich and the parents will eat it. When the chicks are a little older, the parents will regurgitate it away from the nest so that it’s smell doesn’t attract predators.

      The birds aren’t really trying to spread food equitably. They’ll feed whichever one’s chirping and open mouth attracts their attention (normally the biggest chick in the brood) first and then maybe give something to the others when they have enough. I’m not sure if it’s a conscious decision to invest more heavily in the strongest chick or if it just can’t tell the difference and some chicks are able to outcompete others.
