Hannibal’s look when Clarice said he ate his victims is priceless. But in my personal opinion the close up of Hannibal in the cage in Tennessee is by far the best scene in the movie. That look in his eyes freaks me out every time
Well, just watched part 1 and I'm eating too... I got a laugh when the Policeman got surprised when he was Handcuffed by Hannibal..... Most scary was the way he hung up the other policeman in the cage. Like a Bird, only the front of stomach was missing .. such a scary moment !!!!
He was in Baltimore unfortunately, but such good insight! Love reading the comments and seeing insightful people like you respond. Much love from a baltimorian 💕
It occurs to him that she was right, and that he is a trophy hunter, like she said of most serial killers. He never thought of it that way before and he's impressed by her.
It wasn't that. He didn't expect her to say that and, for the first time in their conversation, she kinda bested him. At the very least, she was on equal ground in that moment.
He was already locked on to her southern accent and had been tolerating her inherent rudeness. He had asked her why like "waii" to belittle her level of perception. I think he said thrall instead of enthrall because she is coming up short so far in the movie. Brilliantly played by them both.
He’s consuming them in a different way. He knows everything about them. He prevents them from moving on from the so-called test that he was put through. Even though he can’t see we are probably on the same side.
I remember being a kid so enchanted by Jodie Foster in this movie. Even the way she effortlessly drawls “No. You ate yours…” Didn’t know I was barking up the wrong tree yet. What a beauty.
Hannibal respected Starling and his sharp perception confirmed to him she was (like him) intelligent and not to be underestimated. He also knew she wasn't scared of him and regarded her as formidable.
The whole point was that she was scared of him, as any rational human being should be, but had the courage to face him anyway, multiple times. So she's not only smart, but courageous, as well as insightful, curious, and was open minded enough to not be judgemental, just state facts.
I have. It’s not as delightful as you’d think, as a SOTL fan. There’s times where you’ll want to explain things because you’re sure that the person you’re showing it too didn’t catch them.
It's still amazes me doing films where in here they are just speaking to the camera not each other. They are doing their scenes at different days and times. Then the filmmaker just put those scenes together that we see here. I didn't know this until I saw Jodi telling this in an interview.
What gets me about this scene is that it’s only time Hannibal drops eye contact. Any other time he keeps strong, unwavering, un-blinking eye contact. But when he hears “you ate yours” he drops his eyes and blinks, for the first time.
He wanted to scare her ....wanted to show she is not informative ...but she knew everything and not just that ...she was not scared to tell the truth....and that made him think she is different from the rest
When he said he didn’t keep a piece of his victim that’s kind of bullshit, because even though he ate his pieces, he’s still keeping them in some sort of way think of it as his victim fuelling his body to keep him to go on living
I watched the movie again a few days ago. Such amazing acting by everyone, it still scares me and will always be my favourite film. It's my favourite book too. ❤
❤❤❤I fell in love with Anthony the day I watched that scene. As much as he was being portrayed as a deranged man, but his demeanor, his voice, his lips did it for me. Even though he's over 30 years older than me, even now I'd marry him ❤ 😂😂😂
Hopkins was picked by Laurence Olivier in 1960 to be his understudy. He has proven to be one of the very few superb actors of our generation. Here, he created a monstrous character in just a few scenes. Brilliant!
I always assumed that as Vergil Sparda from Devil May Cry (Classic and/or Reboot) gets old he will become like Hannibal Lector. Not the cannibal part but intelligence, mannerisms, aura and death stare.
Looking at last at a clear image of the screen & am struck profoundly by the so-much-younger Anthony Hopkins, of late so often parodied over the past decades, that I did not remember the power of this slick'd back black-haired demon with the clear eyes and that voice, FAR SCARIER in this clip than he has seem'd to me for DECADES!😊😊
One of my ATF movies. Those two made iconic movie protagonist and antagonist characters with simply awesome on-screen chemistry. I was all but distraught that Jodie didn't commit to the sequel. Julianne Moore more than paled in comparison. Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster's performances set the bar beyond reach.
"Doc Lecter" A.H. never blinks... He says that for this he was inspired by an acquaintance, English if I remember, who when they spoke, stared at people without blinking.... Now, I I tried, damn, it's hard.. maybe because I smoke too much ganja.... anyway great interpretations, but the book....wow!!! P.S.: I'm Italian(😹) and when the movie came out they had to change the title from "the silence of the lambs" to "the silence of the innocent" because at the head of FIAT there was precisely the Agnelli family..(agnelli=lambs!!). Only in Italy do they do these things 🙀🤣🤣
“No, you ate yours,” she stated so honestly, with no fanfare, or regal parlance Hannibal so highly regaled.

Anthony Hopkins OWNED this role. So did Jodie Foster in her role. I can't believe that this movie is now over thirty years old.
