Hate to sound like some dork on the internet,
but this game isn't just a game, it's one of those small hidden master pieces by someone daring to go this far, daring to show everything he thought of, then letting people see it for themselves. It's something that has reached far into peoples minds and affections, revealing them and making this game more than just a game. It's art in my perspective.

@@frostyminiyeets8626 Hahaha, of course! Many kids that weren't able to experience this - or Earthbound for that matter, before Undertale are going to think the latter are inspired by Undertale and not vise versa.
Pretty sure Undertale was actually a little bit inspired by Yume Nikki. Like Gaster being inspired Uboa, for example. (Though I still love this game, and Undertale)

I still remember when I got all 24 Effects. I woke Mado up after dropping all the effects off in the Nexus, then saved the game....and just sat there, listening to the music. I actually started tearing up. I knew what was going to happen. It was as if the game knew that I didn't want to do this.

Kikiyama himself claims that the game has no official meaning. What you just said is important because maybe the game is supposed to reflect life - We go through life with a wide range of emotions and thoughts, like the different dream worlds, but life is open to interpretation. The meaning is what you make of it.

No matter what theory you choose to believe, the thing that is definite is something tragic happened to Madotsuki. This song tells of her last moments, sitting on the top of the stepladder, reminiscing life one last time. Her friends, her family, everyone shown in her dreams who were projections of her acquaintances, the life she would never live, how everything was better before. She throws herself off, but in those last seconds, she feels how she hasn't felt since the tragedy, she felt free~
It's sadly a story of r**pe, the slime dude for example is like a **** when you use the knife his movements become faster and faster like she was resisting and he speeds his movement or like the scene where you enter some Doors with scream with blood it's a représentation of forced penetr******. It's really a dark game when you think about it but yeah the story, the art, the lore is awesome. But yeah it was simply the story of a young girl who wanted to escape her pain but her dream make her remember and when she realize the truth (remember everything) she couldn't dream anymore, she was now stuck in the real world. But she wanted to dream again so she killed herself for live in this world you never wake up.

in a way i feel a connection of some sort to mado. She's afraid to deal with reality and society, and she has a very active mind, especially in those dark parts. i get lost in my imagination all the time just thinking about weird otherworldly things. This whole game just reminds me of the darkest parts of my life
I listened this song since 2012 and *oh my god* such a master piece, so delicate, so harmonious, so beautiful. I was a shy guy back when I was 14, everybody bully at me, having one of the most awkwards and depressing moments of my life... I really don't wanna talk to this anymore, I was *crying* so much, why everybody hates me..? I just want to die :(
When suddenly I found this game and this song... Makes me feel warm and cold at the same time. Actually makes me think about my family, my few friends and my future... Depression was no longer. gone...

Such a mysterious and vague game, just as it's author, leaving it for any interpretation the players may find suitable.
Indeed a unapreciated piece of gaming art. Wish the creator would make a sequel or something that would lead us to know what actually happened to the main character.

At first, this game didn't hook me in, but I kept on playing. Then I finished the game, and I got to say, that was sad seeing Madotsuki end her own life at the end since she's the only person that both we the players and Madotsuki spent time throughout the game. And all this time, I realized that I was interested and completely addicted to this game since Madotsuki is a very interesting character despite her having no dialog and all she did was walk and find effects. She's probably my first videogame waifu. Overall, great game.
I can't possibly be the only one here from Undertale DDD right?

Otra cosa, somos muchos los que fuimos impactados por YN así que nunca va a caer en el olvido. No hace falta "hacer algo algo al respecto", lo que sea que eso signifique. Kikiyama ya hizo más que suficiente regalándonos el juego.

I dropped all the effects in the Nexus and went to go save one last time. Then I just left Madotsuki sitting in the chair while this played. I couldn't help but wonder what was going through her mind as she wrote in her dream diary one last time... This game had a profound effect on me.

I think the most depressing thing about this game is the rumor that the main character is Kikiyama's girlfriend, who in fact committed suicide.
The interview where that information was released is debunked by the majority of the fandom now, sadly. Still was a neat theory, though.
I've listened to this about three times in a row now...and I've been fighting back the feeling to cry....this is so beautiful....

From all the hints in her dreams, A full story isn't clear but can be made out. Madotsuki is such an endearing character despite us knowing little to nothing about her. A gorgeous arrangement. All life is precious.
Here's the full lore behind the game, and it's actually confirmed:
She's not conscious, she's still in her mother's womb, both of them are sharing the same dreams and that's why the mother could be seen in the manga saying "I've promised to give birth, and when I do...I'll finally hear your cries, your voice for the first time..and say good morning"
Because the mother already met her baby (which is Madotsuki) but only in her dreams without even hearing her voice, and that's why Madotsuki can't get out of her room, She Only will get out when her mother gives birth, which means Madotsuki's apartment represensts her mother's belly.
Also the video game (the red console) that could be played next to the tv, represents the baby eating his mom's left overs. That's why a red creature looking exactly like a new born could be seen eating certain stuff falling from above.
And btw the mom wasn't assaulted at all she was just lustful, and all that was confirmed in the manga. Madotsuki didn't die at all, she's just unborn.
And that's why tons of reproductive organs are seen throughout the game, It's the only piece of reality that Madotsuki could see.
Also, Madotsuki's eyes in the game are shut, because her mother is still in early pregnancy, the unborn child had already experienced depression without even opening their Eyes throughout it's mother's dreams and memories.
And btw, yall guessed it right..the Mom's name is Poniko, she's the girl with the blonde appearance. That we'll eventually meet half way through the story.
That's basically the story, Madotsuki didn't die or anything like that, she's just waiting for her birth, and while doing so, she's reliving memories...

It's almost as if, every time you save the game, the game supposes, or hopes that you'll forget Yume Nikki, that you won't collect all 24 effects, and that you won't complete the game, and maybe, just maybe, unlike Madotsuki at the end the game, you'll turn the computer off, open the door, and go outside, and embrace life, good or bad.

Came here after hearing the Save screen diary music from Yume Nikki reboot 2018 just yesterday. The piano music was so calm, never realised that someone has arrange this GEM 6 years ago already. LIKE IT~

Kayla Gone true, although undertale tells you how the story directly, yume nikki's mysterious style of story gives way more creativity on what do the dreams really mean, nonetheless i love em both
Both games are inmensely different honestly.
Undertale is an actual game, with actual mechanics and an actual story, most people played it expecting a funny game.
On the other hand; Yume Nikki, as pretentious it may sound, is more like an interactive art gallery, there's no much of a plot, special mechanics, or even a clear objective. People plays it without knowing what to expect from it, or sometimes just because the experience of it's weird and dreamlike (lol) imagery.
I don't think it's fair to compare them (though I personally prefer Yume Nikki as well, let's just say I played it at the right moment).
All in all tho.
Mother 3 is where it's at.

I think the original arranger is Kamome Sano? The video this is reprinted from is uploaded in Kamome's NND channel, and she mentions she indeed made it. Kinda odd nobody has mentioned it yet, and I've seen multiple people saying this is some arrangement on the brink of becoming lost media, someone even saying "the original video has been lost" when it's still up on Nico Nico. I have been a fan of Kamome's works for quite a while, and it's quite nice to hear this is also made by her!
