  • quick video Idea I had, I wanted to see how easy i could forge a knife and I actually got the idea from old hickory forge and his san mai hunting knife with the set down idea
    as for this knife I think next time I'll skip the handle contouring and keep that straight sloping looks, it felt really comfortable and unique but for some reason I decided not to keep it, next bushcraft knife I definitely will
    it's made from a metal file and using brass pins and some maple or cherry wood handles (I don't know how to identify wood types all I know it's pretty)
    if you want more knife content go follow my instagram, I don't always make a video of my knives and unusually post more there anyway.

    I have never seen anyone forge the tip of a blade like that. That's awesome

      Kinda something i just picked up, it was faster and I don't get fish lips anymore, can't take all credit I did learn a lot from old hickory forge

    I just got the same anvil. I liked the design and size this blade. I've had good luck with the old Nicholson files over the years myself. Good job.

      It's a great anvil for the price, especially when real anvils cost dam near a arm and a leg where I live

    As a wood guy, burning a cherry handle doesn't make it look better. It's a beautiful wood, give it a boiled linseed oil finish and let it be beautiful.

      I just like to burn the end of my knives because one time while camping I accidentally left a knife by the fire and the back burnt, I was mad until I looked at it and thought it was a cool design, I have a few I don't burn cause of nice wood, I try to keep the burn on oak and anything with a lighter shade just so it contrasts, I never really liked it on this one tbh

      @@McGowanForge I'm really lucky. I have a sawmill about 3 miles from my house that sells short boards of exotics and all kinds of domestic hardwoods for between $5 and $20 depending on the wood and the size. I can often get 3 handles out of a single board. I've bought bloodwood, purple heart wood, yellow canary, teak, mahogany, padauk, and walnut. My favorite domestic is quarter sawn sycamore. I'm actually better at the scales than I am the blades but I came into blade making as a hobby from woodworking so I'm biased about nice looking wood scales. 😁

      @ozarked2363 dam I don't live anywhere like that closest wood store is lowes lol, but my favorite woods are oak walnut and cherry sine those look best stained , I'm still looking for better hardwoods to use

      @@McGowanForge Don't overlook neighbors blown down trees and limbs. I cut them about 16" in length and 2" thick. Limbs work the best for me but you can get stuff from the trunk if you're handy with a chainsaw and you have a planer, and or, a table saw or bandsaw. Seal the ends with spray paint or polyurethane and let it dry in a climate controlled area. I use my basement. You'll have a lot of waste but you can get some more unusual woods that are native to your area. I have some acreage and I'm constantly cutting stuff out of the road and fence rows. Right now I have persimmon, sumac, poplar, cherry, sassafras, and wild plum pieces drying. I'm on the lookout for buckeye, dogwood, and redbud. I don't want to kill a live tree but a low hanging limb is fair game for pruning. I also scrounge it from garage sales. I bought a CD cabinet for $2. The top and bottom were solid teak. Like I said, I'm a wood geek, and I think it's cool to have native woods for handles. Hard to beat bloodwood though as an exotic. I just finished my best handle yet, bloodwood pieces sandwiched around sycamore in the middle with black and white spacers and mosaic pins. I'm keeping it.

      Thanks, 2x72 had been on my wish list for like 3 years now, usually I grind best I can for a ricasso and then hit it with a file and sandpaper and it turns out decent half the time

    Let's change bushcraft to some other word. It used to be folks
    that used minimal low cost or
    homemade gear. Now it's turned
    into a money spending contest
    EDIT- thanks for making a good usable knife instead of a fantasy
    fighter kukri something or other

    • @McGowanForge
      @McGowanForge  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I try to make useable blades, and my gear is probably worth about less then 1k all together with my sander, angle grinder, vise, and hammers, anvil. But thanks for watching and the comment

    "Ignore that" @6:33 😂 nice video, I don't think you should be adding fake hammer texture. I think you produced a great knife. You should be proud of your work.

    Video description said "simple tools" I don't think a shit ton of people have a belt sander nor a table grinder so how would someone go about sharpening their knife without such fancy tools

    • @McGowanForge
      @McGowanForge  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I say simple cause I bought this belt sander from harbor freight for 60$ (some even cheaper) and the angle grinder for 40$ witch really affordable when most 2x72s cost upwards of 1thousand$
      The Anvil can really be any chunk of steel and your forge can be a charcoal pit, so I do have "simple tools"
