- It's Cage Match month at Cinemassacre Video! This week it's Con Air versus The Rock. Two movies enter the cage but only is left standing. The Rock is about breaking into prison and Con Air is about breaking out of prison. Nick Cage goes all out in these action packed cinema masterpieces.

I know I'm late to the game, but why haven't you done Cage's Gone in 60 Seconds?! In my opinion that was the Best Cage film.... Once again it may feel like an ensemble film, but NC is the clear lead.

The little girl from that scene looks like she's from the 1950s or 1960s, rather than the 1990s. The dress she's wearing looks more 1957 than 1997.

@@12ealDealOfficial Yes . Yea some of them stories were "cheesy" and over the top , but all of them were fun and because CGI was not that developed back then they felt natural . I'd rather watch a 4/10 stars Chuck Norris movie than most of the "movies" today who look more like animated movies than actual real live movies .

That doesn't work... 90's action movies are great and entertaining, I rented both of these from Blockbuster, etc. countless times. But they're not, like... important in an artistic sense.
The Rock is the better film by far. As much as I like Con Air, the action and the characters just aren't a patch on The Rock. Also that music...the simplicity. The villain actually being a unique guy with morals etc. Con Air is watchable af, but The Rock rewards rewatching and analysis far more.

I like The Rock more and think it is better, but I wouldn't say that it is a better film by far.
The Rock has more depth, Con Air is great too but The Rock is just a level above.
Random Funfact: Final Fantasy 8's original music for the landing at Dollet was changed because it was too similar to The Rock theme when they invade the place where the gas was stored.
i once spliced the rock theme to the FF8 cutscene and it really fits the cutscene
Dude that is so crazy you saying that because I've been thinking about that for 20 years now I always thought they were EXTREMELY similar. Love the Rock and love FF8.
Wow...that's amazing, I never knew that and I've played the heck out of FF8...the landing at Dolet was one of the most incredible scenes even though it was fairly early on in the game.
The playable demo for FFVIII (packaged with Brave Fencer Musashi) still contains Uematsu's original composition that echoed Zimmer's piece from The Rock. FFVIII's OST however contains the replaced composition called "The Landing" which is still just as good for the raid on Dollet.

I'd go Con Air just edging out The Rock. But my favourite bit is from The Rock after he crashes the Ferrari, a guy says "you just crashed your ferrari" and cage replys "It's not mine". I just loved that scene.
Watching Ed Harris behind the scenes trying to get his lines right was pretty cool. Dude is really intense with his acting.

lambknot Likely one of the main reasons he was the “villain” reveal in Snowpiercer.
They needed a level of intensity that could not only be explained quickly via the motives behind that quite flawed train plan, but throw in some waxing philosophy to justify the caste system.
Harris can also be “quiet” intense, so it was not just a great reveal, but a great performance, however brief (a la Ned Beatty in Network).
i wonder how intense he was in Milk Money.
It has to be the Rock for me! My favourite Nic cage line is when he's fighting the Marine at the end and utters the funniest line and question of all "let's talk music. Do you like the Elton John song Rocketman?"

CON AIR FOR SURE! Might just be nostalgia but that movie ripped my head open as a little kid. Was awesome.

The Rock is my favorite movie ever! I've watched it like 50 times. One time 20 years ago I watched it 3 times in a day. I've literally destroyed this VHS tape.

The Rock easy. Amazing soundtrack and Sean Connory was epic in this movie

I went to see the The Lost World at a drive in and it was playing as a double feature with Con Air.
Con Air blew TLW away! I remember going from thoroughly entertained to falling asleep.

Oh man, The Lost World sucked! Shoot the stupid T-Rex with bullets already and stop it's dumb rampage! Instead...people just run away and get eaten. I get it, fans like seeing dinosaurs kill people, but I get tired of seeing normal Dinosaurs being portrayed as invincible Godzilla monsters. Con Air is just so awesome and fun! I love that movie!

In 1999 I've asked my classmates (I live in Russia) to do their Top 10 Movies lists, and the winner of the compilation chart was The Rock.

He completely missed the fact that Ed Harris was bluffing.
There's a couple rental reviews where he clearly hasn't seen the movie in a while or at all.

I really enjoyed Cage in The Rock more; he was the fish out of water in a crazy series of situations and really made it fun. Con Air also great.

Speaking of borrowing elements, Nick Cage's character in Con Air is Cameron Poe. Oscar Isaac's pilot character in Star Wars is Poe Dameron. I don't think that is a coincidence.

Con Air has a Grammy award theme song, more thrills and action scenes, these give this movie a better statistic.
I love them both. Every time I watch them I can't help but laugh at how awesome and over the top the action is. Just when you think the situation cannot escalate any further something fucking crazy happens 😂

Loved con air when i was a kid and was shocked when i heard there was another cut as i got older.
I've seen that other cut. It's alright- it expands on Cameron's friendship with Baby-O- but the theatrical cut is just fine on its own. I haven't seen that version in a while though but I do have it.

What's crazy is that both Con Air and Faceoff were released just a couple weeks apart from each other in the Summer of 1997. I'd call that summer peak Cage as action star.

My favorite of these two is the parts of Steve Buscemi in Con Air.
Everything else from both movies can be buried on the desert.

The Rock is one of my favorite action films. The score is incredible, Ed Harris and Sean Connery have a presence that is captivating, the action is great because most of it is practical, love the story, and Vanessa Marcil is gorgeous

Con air is more “Cagey” but the rock is a better movie. Nice cage is not a badass. He’s like Ross from friends. He’s better suited to the reluctant hero in the rock. With Connery as the cool guy.

Both are great movies, but The Rock is better. Soundtrack is freakin amazing too, one of the best ever. I'm curious to see the results of the poll as I think you guys are all crazy for picking Con Air, though I just watch & enjoy movies rather than make/analyze them.

Music in the Rock was like practise piece to that awesome Metal Gear Solid 2 soundtrack!
It was actually Harry Gregson-Williams' score to The Replacement Killers (1998) was what inspired Hideo Kojima to hire him as the composer for MGS2.
@@nicholasebling5004 oh didn't know that. MGS2 theme just sounds so much the same as The Rocks theme and i know Harry Gregson worked with Zimmerman on that movie.
