- Spooling braided line on a baitcasting reel can be a bit tricky. I have created this video for anyone wondering how to spool braided line onto a round baitcasting reel.

WOW! those Abu Garcia Ambassadeur reels are world famous for a reason, they work. And you have that matched up with an Ugly Stik rod....Awesome!! That setup can do just about anything a fisherman needs done! Great job.
They sure are. I have been very happy with mine so far. I wanted to get this combo because I knew it would last a long time and it would be able to land any fish I need it to. I actually just recently did a video review over both the Ambassadeur and the Ugly Stik rod as a combo. Do you currently use either of these for fishing?
@@fishinglife1016 I use Ugly Stiks a lot, and have for many years including the catfish! I have always had great luck with them. I am just now looking at getting a 5500 and 6500 C3 or C4 series. Always heard great things but I never had fished with them. I have a lot of friends that swear by them and constantly tell me to get some.
I'm glad to hear that. I think that either the 5500 or 6500 would be great reels for catfishing. I don't think there are many times you would need the extra capacity the 6500 has over the 5500 for catfish, I purchased the 6500 though just because it was the same price. It seems like most people in the catfish world prefer the 6500 too. Someday I would like to get a C4 to see how much difference there is between that and the C3. Thanks for watching by the way!
@@fishinglife1016 if you can find one made in Sweden not China
Anthony, are those what he "S" version is for the 5500 and 6500's?
That giant knot you tied on the spool caused a hump on the spool at the finish.
It'd be nice if I could actually see what you were doing. Would you mind making another video and show how to spool the line into the reel? Thx
Yes, you can spool the braided line straight to the spool on the real. I have done that for years. I don't use Monophillment for backing at all
I just tried putting braid on my abu Garcia c3 6500 with the tape and it still slipped and and pinched itself on the spool. Ruined 100 yards of 60 lbs braid. Will the backing make it not slip and ruin it ?
I would be happy to help. I have had good results using either a monofilament or duct tape backing. If you are using tape, you will want to put on a piece about as wide as the spool and then tie a knot to it (I use an improved clinch) and cinch it tight to the spool. If it still slips, you can put a small piece of tape over the knot itself. When you are spooling the braided line, you will want to keep some tension on it so it doesn’t “bite into itself.” I am wondering what you meant by it “pinched itself”, and how did it ruin 100 yards of braid?
The backing will keep it from having ghost drag or slippage. To keep it from pinching make sure you keep the line nice and tight while spoiling on the reel. I have had zero issues if my spool is tight.
Thank you really good instruction
Thank you!
@@fishinglife1016 can I make a suggestion for tying the backing to the spool as I spooled reels at bass pro shops for a year. Use a uni-knot to the spool is a smaller compact knot. Also when using backing even living in Florida for saltwater fishing the heaviest backing we used was 30lb mono.
@@corbyn7840 Thanks for the tip. I will have to try that out the next time I am spooling a rod. Using 30 lb Mono makes sense since it is closer to the size of the 80 lb braid than the 60 lb Mono.
@@fishinglife1016 yes you want to stay close to the diameter of the braid. Also with doing a uni to uni knot I go about half the wraps I do with the braid because the diameter difference and the also use water to wet your knot as the braid can burn the mono
@@fishinglife1016 I also have a know that's even more compact and works well tying mono to braid. It's close to being as compact as the fg knot but way easier to tie
Nice vid but didn't see whe actions you performed while applyin the line through the spool just seen the rod and table.
We did you get the spool holder I need one badly thank you
I actually made this one. I made it out of pieces of either 1x4 or 1x6, don't remember which. I screwed those together and drilled a hole to put a pencil through to hold the spool. It works pretty good, especially if you are using it to spool braided line.
Ok great thanks for your help and time
No problem at all. Thanks for watching.
Just take a box and stick a pencil hole through it. Then hold the spool on the pencil with the pencil through the box
What rod are you using
I have this reel paired with an 8' Ugly Stik Catfish Edition. I have a review video over both the rod and reel if you are wanting to know more about either the rod or reel. For my personal use though, I really like the combo of the 6500 C3 and the Ugly Stik. Video - th-cam.com/video/GbpDccLkV8E/w-d-xo.html
Cool Vid. First class supporting cast to. :)
Thanks! He sure makes it interesting.
Lol thats not the reason you use backing
