    Chester was my favorite side kick. A fine actor. Gunsmoke had one of the finest cast.

    Dennis Weaver managed to shake that "Chester" image and had a fine acting career. Lots of times a character sticks with someone so bad that they have a hard time doing other things. He was a great one!

      So true. I know the cast of Gilligan's Island were never able to live down their roles, nor did the actors both adult and children on The Brady Bunch.
      I missed Chester when he left, but I can understand why Weaver wanted to move on to other acting projects.

    Chester is a hoot and cracks me up. I heard many times when I visit friends in TN as I understand it the tune is an old mountain tune and as far as I know there is no published music or copy rights in regards to its use. Anyway thank for viewing and I am glad you enjoyed the post.

    Saw this on a Gunsmoke rerun just the other day, and was a bit surprised at the song used. The song is a slave composition titled "Run, (N-word), Run": "Run, _____ run, the pattyrollers get you" etc. "Pattyrollers" was what they called the "patrollers" who looked for runaway slaves. First time I've heard "rabbit" used as a substitution lyric. Most times, "Johnny" is used.
    Historically accurate its use in this "Gunsmoke time", as it was an already well established part of our nation's "musical lexicon".

      I am an African American male who enjoyed Gunsmoke immensely. Sad to hear that this song had such overtly and profoundly racially charged origins.

      @DS Private Forget it. The black race is a total loss. They have been so ingrained and indoctrinated by America's Democrat and Liberal enemies, the situation is forever unrecoverable. They are Democrat Party property. Always have been and always will. Write them off as a total loss.

      As I watch 'Gunsmoke' today, I just marvel, at just how STUPID, Chester really was!! I guess I just wasn't as astute to paying attention then, as I am today!! But, yeah, Chester wasn't very bright. A good example of this is, the episode where Chester 'explains', why he can't 'borrow' money from the bank, when he doesn't have any money or collateral. He was DUMB.

    Actually, this episode may be a preview of what happens when the dreaded gunslinger..Bad Bart the Rabbit hits town shooting his way through Dodge...run, run Mr. Dillon will catch ya...right Chester. I really think Chester demonstrates more common rabbit sense than the other cast members. But, it's just entertainment.

    Although Gunsmoke is one of my favorite older tv shows to watch, I always felt the "Chester" character was nothing short of a joke. It added nothing to the series that helped it. When Dennis Weaver decided to leave the series and the Festus character was written in, that greatly improved the series as far as I'm concerned. However, when he played the lead character in the series "McCloud", that is a different thing altogether. I think he did an excellent job in that role. The best part about the McCloud series is the frustration that he brought down on Chief Clifford and Sgt. Broadhurst. McCloud always fell in the pot but come out smelling like a rose. He drove Chief Clifford crazy by always doing just the opposite of what he was told. Over all, Dennis Weaver was a great actor.

    • @David76135
      @David76135  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Very good, but I liked both roles and shows isn't great that there is something out there for everyone. Weaver was a good actor that played both roles well.

      Eddie Schantz Remember it was a Radio show before the television series. Parley Baer played Chester and it worked. Dennis Weaver kept to that same script of a character. Slightly dumb, cheereful but loyal sidekick for the Sheriff. Festus on the other hand, could be sharp, and ornery as a buzzard when the situation required.

    • @nitr0junki3
      @nitr0junki3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I enjoy the first 8 seasons much more than the subsequent seasons that included festus as Matt’s sidekick. I found festus to be more irritating with Ken Curtis’ fake hillbilly drawl and incessant stupidity.

    • @davidstevens5602
      @davidstevens5602 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      0The CHESTER character added dialogue to Marshall Dillon's thoughts. Dennis Weaver added his own sense of humor and his singing into the character which kept Chester interesting as well as funny and just a ''side-kick'' for Matt.
