- This walking tour will show you the buzzing Amsterdam's red light area or De Wallan in April of 2022. I walked with my expensive Camera and captured the Red light area ambience in full 4k HDR. Is it safe, was I interrupted. Watch the video to find out. Please note that filming inside red light district is not against the law but it can be dangerous so I will not advise you to do so.

I was born & raised in Amsterdam and I liked this video in a strange way: people from Amsterdam seldom visit the centre, since it was taken over by tourists many years ago. I literally know nobody who ever visits the centre of our own city...that's a bit of a shame actually, since our old city centre is quite beautiful in its own way...
Having conversation with the bartender in a pub, they told me the same thing, the question is where does local dutch people hang out ?
@@MostlyWalking Basically in their own neighbourhood (basically east/west/south Amsterdam...even the North area which was always a no go area as well gets more popular now) All the shops in the Dam area are complaining these days they never see original Amsterdam inhabitants anymore...it's becoming a real financial problem for those shops...

@@erickarreman6119 I live in Amsterdam and don't go to the center areas on weekends, but like you said they are quite beautiful so I will bike through them on weekdays. But no local I know is eating or drinking at any restaurant in the center, they are all awful overpriced food that tourists are tricked into thinking is local fare.

Actually, this is the perfect video for anyone wanting to see exactly what Amsterdam's Red Light is like, or for anyone missing Amsterdam and needing a little pick me up if 'home sick'. Love this!

When I visit other countries, I want to eat their cuisine. I don’t want to eat burgers, fries, pizza and all the food you might find on any high street in Britain or America. No wonder tourists primarily ruin cities (yes, we are all tourists at some time on our travels) so that the locals don’t want to enjoy their own cities.
What is the answer, I wonder?
Great walkthrough. Super clear vid. Brought back a lot of memories and although its been almost 20 years, I was glad to see a lot of old favourites are still there. Including the Golden Chopsticks Chinese restaurant.... a great place to fuel up before a night of partying. It seemed a little less dodgy than I remember, especially on the corners / bridges. Having said that, the later and quieter it gets, the more you have to be careful of what's around you.
Great video work. Brings back memories. I haven't been there in over 22 years. Used to do airline layovers at Schiphol airport and go to the red light district occasionally.
I'm an American and I've visited Amsterdam many times. A truly World Class city. In those visits, I've certainly learned the red light district is not only safe, it's one of the most expensive and fashionable parts of the city. Certainly safe to carry your camera. Just be careful who you're pointing it at.

Really great quality video, it’s gone a lot quieter now than say 10 years ago, something has taken the red out of red light but hay ho it’s still nice to see the old landmarks.

It's "De Wallen", not "De Wallan". 😊 The quality of the camera is superb, I really like the atmosphere it gives.
The maker/poster of the video gives a heart to this reaction but doesn't change Wallan into Wallen....
I've been twice in the last 8 weeks as I've learnt to love the place. In may I had a small panic attack and needed some air. I walked around the square and high street at 3am and the only bother i got was beggars asking for money. Of course I wouldn't make a habit of doing this if I lived there but the place is a lot cleaner and safer than when I first visited in year 2000. The biggest down side to the red light is it's mostly crap take away food shops. I don't know why so many are needed(probably money laundering)..but It's insane!!

WoW I first laid eyes on a foreign country when my parents paid for a weekend Townsen Thoreson trip by coach from uk in 1972. it was my coming of age present of 21. getting off the ferry at Zeebruge, we travelled from there to Amsterdam at 4am in the morning, ending up at the "Hotel Krasnpolsky" about 7.30am .....Central Station was just up the road, went and visited it and saw my first European Trains, which were different from our uk ones....Amazing place and A BIG part of my life and memorys made then. Especially the cruise on the canals with cheese and wine, before embarking on our coach back to Dover....

my last visit was in 1961, streets are the same , steak houses and lots of bars I remember , good memories . Thanks for the clear video. I usually stayed in what is now known as Jimmy Hotel , cheap and close to the nerve center

The Red-Light area is well-known as one of the most heavily policed areas in Amsterdam. You'll be safe as long as you don't invite trouble - filming or taking pictures of the working girls is definitely a good way to antagonise the locals and I wouldn't advise it.

That was a great quality filming but I wasn't sure which was the actual red light district. It looked just like canal walks. . The last time I visited was in the eighties.

Went there my first time in 1971 whilst stationed in Germany as a soldier,.....I was 20 years old and what an eye opener that was. Probably went there half a dozen times since then whilst in Europe museum hopping and never had a bad time ever. Great memories indeed.

It looks like a beautiful, clean, interesting safe place.
Its not safe, pick pocketing everywhere and if you are alone in the dark alley you get robbed. House robberies are common as well thefts of anything you can turn to money. Not even mentioning open drug usage and crazy people because of that.

I'm from America, and 30 years ago, now, I went on a daylight walking tour of that area just before Christmas with a small group of people. Our tour guide was a local, but not a professional guide. We'd had an educational and peaceful walk through the area, which was surprising to all of us. We all thought we were going to at least get mugged. The "houses" were all connected and if we'd have busted through any wall we would've been in the next house, which all also had giant picture windows in them where the girls were supposedly standing in and dancing nude to attract customers. Yet, on our tour we didn't see one woman in one window, to which our guide said that that was really strange for the district. Lastly, our guide pointed out two buildings in the district which weren't "houses." They were actually two churches there which also absolutely shared a wall, which was crazy to us, because the one church was a Christian church, presumably protestant, and the occupants in the next space over were in the church of satan. We never found out which group was there first.
I passed through Amsterdam in the 1970s, and there were practically no tourists in the red-light district, just randy merchant seamen. Most of the girls were in their windows, and few of the drapes were drawn. The only tourists I saw were backpacking hippies, as that was an era of dropping out. This video suggests that Amsterdam is now overrun by tourists, as are many great cities.

Another gay couple was attacked in Amsterdam Oost on Thursday evening. One man was stabbed with a piece of glass, injuring his arm. Three teenagers were arrested.

The red light in the Dam has become very sanitised. There was a time when there were lines of dealers selling Herion all along De Wallen. Nowadays it's just tourists strolling about just like this guy and no more dangerous than any other big city.
It's one of the least dangerous cities in Europe. Always has been.
