  • I love Ireland. I really do. But it isn't all Leprechauns and Rainbows and Rivers of Guinness. Ireland has a lot of great things about it and it's part of why I love it. But like all countries, Ireland has a lot of bad sides to it as well. In this video, I picked my Top 5 Pros and Cons of Living in Ireland, I didn't sugarcoat it. Thanks a lot for watching I Hope you enjoy. I'm back next Friday with a new video! See you then :)

      I am drawn by all of the above plus your ancient "Druid" religion. I am also interested in your language origin and the possible unification of Ireland.

      @@machinemanmclaren That's really cool! I'm very interested in Druidic religions. They make more sense than most religions. It's about worshipping the elements, the trees, the sun, the things that we know give us life. It's much easier to understand and form a mutual relationship with nature than it is with the invisible man that lives in the clouds.

    Wanted to say last time visited Ireland alone and not in a group, I was in Dublin and I went in the church to ask about a symbol near the door and one of the church workers invited me to tea and biscuits. They didn’t know me at all but we had a good conversation. That’s sort of demonstrates about the Irish being welcoming.

    I was born and lived in Ireland for 9 years but moved to the US because my dad got a job offer he couldn't refuse. It's been 13 years and we've visited family and friends every single year since moving(besides the COVID years) and I just can't get to calling the US my home. Ireland is still my home. I'm getting ready to go into my last year at university, then the plan is to move back home to where I belong. Loved the video mate

    I'm surprised that most of the cons are the same in Germany actually. I'd still prefer Ireland wayyy more 😄 I never could identify myself with the german culture but Ireland always fascinated me. Actually I was a child, I didn't know much about Ireland and then I had a dream where I was flying over the island and it felt like home. Since then I'm thinking about moving to Ireland one day.

    Great video, honest about the pro's and cons. What I love about Ireland is sense of community that still exists in the towns and even some suburbs of even a big city like Dublin, sadly lost in most parts of the UK, also love the optimism and exuberance of young Irish people, even in the face of the cons mentioned in the video they still smile and laugh and enjoy the craic, you can't put a price on that, overall its still got to be one of the best places in the world to live and I've no plan to leave anytime soon 😁

      @@TheIrishGuyVlogs of course! I will and thanks again for the valuable information , I was never in Ireland but as you said its weired that its a rich country with high GDP with bad infrastructure and I think this is one of the main problem there this have direct connection to housing and to healthcare etc... and I read somewhere online that its because the GDP in Ireland is tricky as in very inflated and dosen't reflect the true wealth of the country and thats why the infrastructure is not at its best but anyway I hope they can fix it soon as its urgent I would assume.👍

    We moved over to Ireland a little over a year back from The Netherlands and it has by far been the best move (pun intended) I ever made. Although we're still figuring out a lot, the people have been so welcoming and inviting, it is amazing! It's also hard working, in Ireland. If you find a job, that is. It took me 6 months to find a job, but I love it. I have to agree about you both the pro's and the con's and maybe it's good fortune that we're renting a nice house and we're in good health, but let's hope the government is looking into it and is willing to do something about it.

    Ireland is a lovely place for exactly the reasons you mentioned. That is why I moved there last year, I even passed through Kilrush on the way from Galway to Killarney (with a little detour to the Cliffs of Moher) - but unfortunately I wasn't about to stay, one of the reasons being the housing crisis - it is as mad as you described it, absolutely no exaggeration there. I saw this video in advance and wanted to give it a try anyway, because Ireland is a wonderful and magical place, but unfortunately it didn't work out for me in the end. "But out of all the places in the world, you could do far, far worse than Ireland."
    I'm an American moving to Dublin in the fall (hopefully to stay) and this is the exact sort of sentiment I remind myself of. It ain't perfect, but from the outside looking in, it seems like a place I'd much rather be in than the US.

    Spot on! I live in London but have a family home over (and am your friend Johnny Murtagh's sister) I have spent most of the summer holidays in Ireland every year of the past 20 (not this year due to Covid) and I pack for winter with a couple of summer bits thrown in. We live in a small rural place near Ennis and there is a bus once a week! Without a car, you have no chance and work is at least a half hour drive away if your lucky. However, saying all that, it is my favourite place in the world to be. I just watched this and your first driving test video as I only decided to to learn at 45 and past in January.

    Now that is a terrific vlog, David. Just discovered your channel. We're a Nepalese-English family which is going to move to Ireland next year. Slightly scary but we will make it a success somehow. We want to buy a house and have chosen Killarney because I was there twice as a kid and loved the place. We won't be able to buy a car at first because paying cash for a house will soak up a lot of our money. We're not too much worried about the rain but I hope the sun comes out sometimes. So far I've just watched this vlog of yours but within a few days I will watch them all. Are leprechauns real ? Best wishes from Anthony in Lisbon, Portugal.

    I am researching about Ireland for few days because I think it is very interesting place and I must say that I am a Little suprised that there are shortage of beds in hospital and housing problem- population is relatively low (I am from Poland we have 40mln citizens ) and always thinking that in smaller and less populated countries is easier to privide good health care as well as social welfare (which I am not big fan of) but its seems like scandinavian countries are taking care of these things greatly and I thought Ireland is similar at this matter, especially that in one video I watched yesterday one girl said that in Ireland taxes are very high so this cons with health care really suprised me.

      Hi Oskar, thank you for your message! Ireland is a very interesting place. Sadly it has it's share of problems. I ou would think in smaller countries it would be easier but there never seems to be enough money here or most of it gets spent in the cities and a lot of the time "rural Ireland" (Any place outside if a city) gets forgotten about 😔 Scandinavian countries are great for taking care of their citizens, I spent some time in Sweden and even got to see their medical devices at work, it was very impressive! We could learn a lot from them. And I'm sure we will in time, the rest of the world needs to catch up with them 😂 How are things in Poland? I hope Covid is starting to caml there. Hey! thanks for the video!
    I would like to share a thought. Please don't take this as a criticism.
    Imagine you go to a desert island with a friend and stay there for 2 years. You can't take a lot, but you need to decide exactly what to take, especially food. When deciding what you're going to eat during all this time, you let your friend decide what to take, because you're busy with other things. When you guys get there and there's no way back. You find out that your friend chose slugs and rotten fish to be the meal for 2 years(and he forgot the water). As strange as it sounds, this friend loves rotten fish and slugs for lunch. Now you'll live for 2 years with it and you won't be able to complain, it's the only food you'll have for 2 years.
    Abstaining from your vote is like letting someone else pick the rotten food for you and no matter what happens, you're just going to have to swallow it.

    • @TheIrishGuyVlogs
      @TheIrishGuyVlogs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, thanks for your comment! And I kind of agree with you, a bit. The problem I have with politics and voting is that the majority wins. Which is "democracy" after all. That might seem great on one side, because the majority of people have got what they voted for. But so many other people didn't get what they voted for. So we are in a system that isn't inclusive of everyone, yes it acknowledges their vote, but if they're not in the majority, their vote isn't heard and they are excluded. I don't want to be a part of a system that doesn't work to help everyone. Humans claim to be civilised but here we are millions of years into our existence, hating and fighting people who happen to think differently to us. The political system promotes division and can only succeed when people are divided and when at least 49% of the people don't get what they want. That's not a fair system, and not something I will be a part of.

    Not only is public transport bad but i nearly got stuck in Kilrush one time. I was staying a few miles away and was in the pubs with the intention of getting a taxi late. Could not get one for love or money. Luckily someone was going close by and offered a lift. I gave them the same fare which they didn't want to take but i insisted as otherwise i would have likely had to book into a B&B as was not going to walk along those roads after a load of Guinness! It totally put me off going there in the future. Perhaps i just picked a bad night! It's sad that the population is falling as limited jobs to take locally. Like many countries, the bulk of funds go to the big population centres. But even setting aside work, there is little for the young to do. Again you have to travel a distance. I remember when young going to the cinema in Kilrush.

      @TheIrishGuyVlogs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unless it's the weekend you don't see many taxis around and even then it's usually kind of later in the evening. They were a lot more common years ago. Even adding am earlier morning bus and later evening bus would make a massive difference to the town and all the other towns and villages on the route. I can see why it would put you off going there, and walking out that road after a few pints is really not a good idea. Fair play to the person that gave you a lift.
      It's sad, the town really isn't what it used to be but I get the feeling it will change for the better. Moneypoint is going to be a huge blow though. Ah man, the Mars cinema, I remember going to see Back to The Future 2 there, it melted my brain 😂 It was amazing. My dad has told me loads of stories about it too, theres a night club underneath the cinema too. When I'm a wealthy Philanthropist I'll buy it and bring it back to its glory 😅

And what Britain has done to Ireland over the years, has been appalling. But that doesn't mean we don't like British people. And in every group of people there will be haters. Dude, you should vote. It's good that your expressing your opinions, that's a form of taking action. But so is voting. Trying to be constructive here: it's a bit weak to complain about your government but then not vote. Voting seems like the easiest, bare minimum thing you can do to try to change things. In the US, if only 100k more people had stayed home on election day, we'd have had Trump for another four years.

    • @TheIrishGuyVlogs
      @TheIrishGuyVlogs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll be honest I've came very close to voting in the past and it's something that I probably should do. A lot of people have died so that I could have that right. I guess it's more down to my view on the whole system of politics. But I think I have a just as much right, if not more, to complain about the state of the government because I've never had a hand in putting it into that state. Even though I do benefit from a system which I think is corrupt, I know it does a lot of good for people, me included. But things like lack of funds when it comes to building hospitals, schools, homes for citizens,is just ridiculous, when a government is failing to provide basic human amenities, it will never have my vote.

    Hi there, we are a family with a son of 5 and we are moving to Ireland. When it comes to school, I've been informed that Gaelic is mandatory to study at school and is an exam subject and may affect the following acceptance at the University. Could you please clarify the weight of studying this language at school? Checking online it seems people don't give much importance to that but at the end, it seems affecting the career of a student.
    Thank you!

    • @TheIrishGuyVlogs
      @TheIrishGuyVlogs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks for your question. The majority of schools here study Irish and they have exams on it too. Even though its mandatory most Irish people don't want to learn or use Irish, because its non essential here and is only spoken in certain areas of the country, I think that's a shame but it is what it is. They tell students that it plays a big part in their leaving cert exam but that's not true. It's just as important as any other exam, it doesn't have any affect on a students career unless they want to do something in the irish language fields or teaching or similar areas. But they way the leaving cert is done, it totals all the point from each exam on all the different subjects, and then you're able to decide what career you're elegible for based on your total of points. That's what I mean by each test being as important as the other. Failing one exam such as Irish would affect the overall mark and I guess further down the line could affect their career, which to me is a just a silly way to do things. So basically if they want to teach Irish it's essential, if they don't it's not. But they still need to study it and try to ace the exam because each exam affects the overall final mark. I hope that has cleared it up for you 😅

    • @BrigataUPG
      @BrigataUPG 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheIrishGuyVlogs Thanks for replying. Much appreciated. May I also ask at what level the language is usually taught? I mean the aim of the school is to drive you fluent in Gaelic or opposite is more "academic" way focused to pass the exam?

    • @TheIrishGuyVlogs
      @TheIrishGuyVlogs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrigataUPG no problem! In schools here you have 3 levels to each exam. Foundation, Ordinary and Honours. Foundation is for subjects you can't really get the grasp of. Ordinary is the standard level and then Honours would be for advanced learners. Ideally the school would want you to do honours because it loos better for them to have more honour students but it's down to the student and their level of skill. But don't be fooled into thinking that Irish is essential to have a job or career here, that's really not the case. It's just one exam in the overall final exam.

      It has became a lot worse since I made this video. Honest hardworking Families through no fault of their own are being kicked out of their homes because of rising rent, greedy landlords and hopeless leadership. They don't have mental issues or drug habits but are definitely being out in a position where both of them are now possible due to being made homeless.

      @@TheIrishGuyVlogs that sounds terrible! Is there no social welfare system so that people don’t have to live on the streets???

      there is a social welfare system but because the price of rent is so expensive in a lot of places, people can't afford to have their own place or even find a place to begin with. There was a video online recently of 200 people queuing to look a house in Dublin and hopefully rent it...that kind of sums it up. Plus on top of that the government is doing very little about it and they're allowing the properties to be bought by private companies and then rented for insane prices. A Broken system creates broken people.

      @@TheIrishGuyVlogs very sad. Same where I live. But our government pays rent / insurance and cost of living when people lose their jobs so they can keep their apartments. But prices are skyrocketing for new renters. I don’t understand why people live in cities anymore. I hate it there. Countryside housing is cheap though in Ireland right?
