Ynab has changed our life and has meant we can save for our wedding, pay for a medical surgery and pay for much needed renovations to our house. Since we started Ynab our net worth changed from going down each month to slowly growing each month. Ynab has saved us from debt and made our intentions with our money so clear
YNAB method is also great for non-finance scarcities as well. For example house cleaning or gardening. I have x number of hours per weekend plus some after-work hours. I can spend 5 minutes a day washing dishes or an hour on the weekend. Doing it on the weekend means I don’t have time to meet a friend for coffee. The “habits” of making trade-offs from YNAB method just start to infiltrate your life in the best way.
Agreed! I break so many different life things up into smaller pieces now like I do with True Expenses, and this has made my life so much easier! ~Ernie
My win is deciding not to spend some money. I had started a category for upgrading our shower. Definitely a want, not a need because our shower works fine. But when I got some cost estimates, I learned it would cost much more than I expected. I knew immediately because of YNAB that I would need to move a lot of money around if I went ahead with the work. I asked myself “would I do it if it cost half as much? No. So how much am I really willing to spend on it?” Turns out right now: nothing. I am not willing to use the money I have set aside for a new roof and a new furnace, both of which my house will need in the next few years. So I told the contractors that I wasn’t going to do the shower project until I after the roof and furnace are replaced - I feel happy and confident about that choice and not at all deprived. I deleted my shower upgrade category and added that money to other priorities. Maybe I’ll add that category back down the road…but I trust future me will still be YNABing and know if or when that’s the right decision.
Reddit killed off their 3rd party apps right when I really was getting into YNAB. My mindless Reddit scrolling turned into active YNAB-ing when I pick up my phone. My accounts and age of money clearly reflect this!
My little YNAB win is finding there's money left over in a category after paying off an annual bill. That means I could afford to save the extra and also that I have a head start on next year's bill (with inflation).
I have a small YNAB win to share: I used to do my expense tracking like once a month or even less, not knowing how much I spent on dining out until I had already spent $600 yikes :0 Now that I'm categorizing my expenses every day and knowing what I'm doing as I do it, it's really helped me to make conscious decisions. Not only that but it's helped me catch a few things that went wrong with my card like a duplicated transaction I had to contact the company to remove, and a subscription I really thought I cancelled after a free trial coming through. Love YNAB and stare at my budget way too much.
Sometimes ‘big’ goals are A) already automated (e.g. investing) or B) related to everyday expenses (e.g. ability to pay for convenience). Depending on life stage, personality, or other contexts investing or convenience, as examples, might be our ‘dream big’ goals. Not everyone dreams about big vacations, swimming pools, mad money, etc.
We are using YNAB personally and in our 2 businesses to implement the Profit First system so we have so many goals happening! We are making a trip to the YNAB Fan fest. Will Ben and Ernie be there?
I wish there was a way to assign money to a group vs a category. I have “weekly spending” as a group. One week we may need a haircut and another week we’re going to the movies. 😊. I know you can move money around but I also use widgets and being able to have visibility of my “envelope” so to speak, would be nice. Love YNAB!!!
can you guys do an ep on dealing with setbacks, I was in a good financial position and got ravaged a fair bit. I want to stick with YNAB but it's no longer as fun!
I'll put that idea on our list-thanks! In the meantime, keep your eyes on upcoming Hannah videos. I think she's releasing one that kinda talks about this. ~Ernie
I have a foreigner question: when Americans say that they payed something in cash, do you actually mean cash money (like bills and coins) or just not-loaned money.
I think we mean both. I'll say cash to actually mean bills and coins, but I'll also use cash to describe my credit card purchases. I have actual money already set aside to cover the expense. ~Ernie
I recently created a donor advised fund and am struggling with how to reflect it in my budget. If it is on budget, I can track my long term funding goals easily but then I have to play the matchy matchy game. If it's off budget, I will have a hard time ensuring that I stay on track for my goals. Anyone have advice for this?
If it's just one acount equaling one category, I would just play matchy matchy. Personally that doesn't bother me much even though it gets a bad rap 😅😂
Whilst I appreciate all this positive happy happy YNABing mantra, as a user coming from classic, I don't understand how so many things have been so dumbed down that they've become downright dangerous and irresponsible, creating a false sense of security over the wholly "budget accuracy focus". Did you lose the classic team, and logic behind it? Did you have a "grand-schisma" and a new KISS approach has been taken? You have bugs that lead to misleading messages, support is offering 3-4 steps workarounds for handling reimbursements instead of just rolling a red category, the same way a green category does....and on and on like with automatic imports and matching! YNAB is also now ridiculously expensive for this dumbed down experience.

Paying for an unexpected true expense is truly an amazing thing.

Yeah, we give matchy matchy a hard time, but it makes sense here! ~Ernie
