I live near antidam in Maryland, it’s strange because of how close it is to the south, meaning that there are people who fly confederate flags a street away from a strategic victory for the north
Yeah, living in Canada, there really is only one flag you see flying in most communities - the Maple Leaf. Sometimes a provincial flag will make an appearance, but Canada was based on hardcore Federalism with the national government having more power than the provinces. Quite different from the USA!
It is one of our faves! Can be hard to find, but if you do see one out there, I highly recommend picking it up! I think your paint jobs would look amazing on these models, or other scale models! I'd buy a set!
Rewatched your video. Just a thing, 4:40 the generals don’t give you any more dice... Only if you have that possibility in one of your cards. They can absorb one flag hit so they dont have to retreat.
Hey Al, is that a different rule from the new version? From the old rulebook, it states that "An infantry or cavalry unit with an attached General may roll one additional die when in combat. A General does not add one die when attached to an artillery unit." Granted, I am showing the new version, but reached back to the original version for the rules. Maybe I mixed up rule books...? (I do that, sometimes...)
The Hilltop Pillbox thank you, yes in the new game, page 9 of the rulebook: "a general attached to a unit will not normally add any battle dice when it is battling". You need a special card with that ability. Actually I think generals in the new game don't add much to a unit except if you have the above-mentioned card. They can ignore one retreat flag and take ground if you want to.
@@varovaro1967 Thanks for the rule clarification! I guess I am guilty of assuming things stayed the same. I have to say I'm not a fan of the revised rule...generals seem less than worthy of command points, and I suspect I would just keep them on the back line. I'll see how the next game goes!
@@robertmoffitt1336 I am sure you aren't alone in that, since the game exists! Although there are elements from the new version that I like, I miss the automatic +1 die for Generals. Oh well, such is life! Thanks for watching and commenting!
One big question (although this thread is a couple of years old!!) can you move units horizontally? meaning can you move and/or shoot from your flanks into the centre? For example, if you have units remaining on your right flank and no more enemies on that flank can you move and engage enemy units in the centre? Can you move your troops into the centre or even left flank OR do they have remain in their section of the map?
To answer your questions: yes, to all! You can move in any direction, as long as it's open. You can engage any unit within your range (4 spaces for infantry and 5 for artillery), and you can move between Left, Center, Right without any problem, as long as it's open. I like to have my units straddle the line between flank and center, if possible, and wise. You cannot shoot through your own units, though, unless you use an artillery unit that is atop a hill, and the unit they are shooting over is immediately adjacent and not on a hill. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@TheHilltopPillbox Wow! Thank you very much! Just got this game about 2 months ago and spent most of that time painting the figures (which was fun and they look great). Appreciate the clarification. Couldn't figure it out! Just played once but hope for more. Best.
@@vkushman No worries! I wish I had the talent to paint minis...but, nope. If you post videos, maybe you would put one up of the finished products...? I've never seen Battle Cry figures painted!
@@TheHilltopPillbox Well, for me its not about talent - just persistence! There are way better painters than me but these miniatures look a lot better. It also makes playing more fun. I'll set em up and post a short video as soon as I can.
@@charliestokes4520 The great thing about this game is that there are three variables: number of units, disposition of units, and number of command cards. You may be outnumbered badly, (as the South usually is), but you will have more cards to choose from, or a better initial disposition of your forces, giving you more options. Easy to learn - lots of fun!
This looks so fun, can't wait to try it out! Probably should learn more about Civil War before buy the game though lol, BTW, I think in the artillery unit, the loader should be at the back near the gun barrel and the scout should be at the front🤔
Actually, it is a great way to learn about the US Civil War, as there are in-depth summaries of all the major battles and characters. Good stuff! Yep, you can place those guys any way you'd like! I've seen one on each side, too, but each to his own!
That is the beautiful thing about this game - you can do ANYTHING and have a great time! We've tried some things that don't work, but we've gotten better at it and rarely try something that doesn't work well. A good idea is to make it as balanced as possible with troops and terrain, with a slight advantage to the newer player. Then, let the dice decide!
Nice alternate set-up system. I like it! Would potentially work well with Memoir '44 as well.(or any of Richard Borg's other designs-Ancients, Napoleonics, etc.) I know Days of Wonder has a scenario generator for Memoir '44, I don't think Avalon Hill has on for Battle Cry, but I believe their is a third party site where Battle cry scenario's can be made. Boardgamegeek has other scenarios as well. This version looks cool, I have the original. Thanks for the vid, nicely done!
The Hilltop Pillbox Technically, it's also SHARPSBURG!(Thought I'd shout it out again!) The Union often named battles after the nearest rivers, and the Confederacy often after the nearest town.(Bull Run/Manassas as example).

I played a version of Battle Cry back in the 1960s. It was one in a series of 'American Heritage' board games produced by Milton Bradley.

I love this game. I have the older version released around 2000...still play it sometimes...
Yep, it's a nice, simple game that can still provide good strategic challenges while driving you nuts with the dice rolls!
great review thank you

Great overview... better than the one that made the box that clearly needs a sense of dimensions.... terribly produced (the box, that is). Thank you!

The new rules combined with the new card deck, is much improved over the old rules, IMHO.
