  • At a recycling center in Boulder, Colorado, automation and artificial intelligence are becoming part of the process. The AI learned how to tell pieces of plastic from sheets of paper and also learns how to grab them. NBC News’ Jacob Ward has more details on the technology.

This is so positive. No humans should be working this disgusting job of sorting out garbage... if we can teach machines to do it, I think it will benefit the world as a whole, so those who work in those facilities can go find jobs elsewhere that are more comfortable. Plus, AI seems like a way better option and more efficient than human sorters.

i had a job doing this once, it sucks, you spend all day staring at a belt with trash speeding by and it can make you motion sick, its smelly too. and you come home every night having to take a shower and blow a ton of dirty black gunk out of your nose as well. not to mention the warehouse you work in is very loud and can be cold in the winter. the place i worked at didnt allow people to wear headphones for listening to music which sucked so i went on amazon and bought ear muffs that attach to my hard hat so i could put my earbuds in and listen to music without anyone knowing which made my day a bit better.

    • @RosscoAW

Because all "AI dangers" come down to capitalism itself being a problem that needs a solution. The automation of work IS a GOOD thing, BECAUSE it automates jobs away. What, you think *people deserve to be working manual labour jobs that break their backs?* All work should, and in a just world will be, voluntary. The automation of labour will force us to rethink capitalism -- and, frankly, it will inevitably lead to revolution. Good. F--- capitalism. Socialists have been theorizing the inevitability of automation replacing jobs leading to a class crisis that forces socialist revolution. So, y'know, *good.* AI, abundance, post-scarcity, automation are all objectively good things and we should be celebrating them for how they can and will improve and free the human spirit, and free us from tedious, enslaving, and pointless work -- and from capitalist profit motives, eventually. We deserve a world where technology that can improve peoples lives *is used to improve peoples lives* without boundary or limitation, without "capital" stepping in the way to say "who pays for it? and why aren't we letting old, privileged white people accrue ALL of the profits anymore?"

It's truly remarkable. However, it's the start of a solution we started by being so wasteful. We don't want to wash dishes so we're quick to drink from plastic bottles and eat off paper plates ( I included myself by saying "We"). It's convenient, but I'm constantly thinking about all the plastic forks, spoons, and bottles that get a one-time use. We need to do better. 😔
