  • Should we adopt a second greyhound? In this video, we ask for your help in deciding if we should adopt a greyhound called Scout. My wife has been thinking of getting a second greyhound for some time, but I am unsure. It has to be noted I was unsure about getting Magnus and we are best buds. so feel free to comment and let us know your thoughts on stories on getting a second greyhound.

Take her home as a foster with intent to adopt. A trial of maybe 3 weeks. It should not take to long to see if they really get along together. I think that unless both have Alpha (top dog) personalities, they will get along. After I adopted my first grey, I fostered and adopted another, too. I did not keep every grey I fostered, but it was a temptation. Some just stayed a night while being tranferred to a home. Others stayed a few weeks. The boy came several years later as a re-home. His mom had grown fragile, and he was a younger dog. But, I already knew him. It is possible to pet 3 dogs at once with only 2 hands. All three loved to be cuddled. Three at once was a bit when walking. Two are easy. I say, Go For It! Virginia in Ohio
P.S. I think your wife really wants her.

Hey Buddy, this is going to be a long comment. I love watching Magnus videos, he reminds me so much of my greyhound Thor (not in looks, but personality). Thor was my best friend and we went through so much together. I lost him about a year ago. Thor had really bad separation anxiety, after a year we adopted a smaller girl greyhound (Della) to keep him company (it didn't help with the anxiety). Long story short, we didn't have time to see if they were compatible, we were in the middle of a very bad winter and Thor would get sick in the car, so I just went adopted her sight unseen. (Obviously you don't have this problem). Mine never really took to each other. They didn't cuddle, play, or hang out together much. Although, Della really needed Thor. He was a good leader for her. He taught her how to live in the house, he protected her on walks (she's very insecure), and she followed him everywhere. He was fine without her, but she really needed him (when I took him to vet, she would go crazy in the house without him). He was also very dominant over her. She couldn't really play (he'd always be the fun police if she was having too much fun), outside she was afraid to run with him because he'd over power her, but when we lost Thor, Della was lost. She didn't know where to go, what room to be in, she's super aggressive towards other dogs on walks now (without Thor's protection), etc. Anyway, I'd do it again, but I'd definitely try to make sure the dogs were compatible first. They definitely enjoy the comfort of having another dog around. But, it's twice the food bills, twice the toys, twice the vet bills, when the weather sucks, you have to take out 2 dogs instead of one. But my best memories were waking up and seeing the two of them waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs, wagging their tails, excited for a new day. Anyway, lastly, I just want to say, you will be so thankful for all these special videos you've made of Magnus. I wish I had memories like that of Thor. All I have are a few crappy iPhone videos. Sometimes I watch your Magnus videos just to remember Thor because his personality was so similar. You'll know what I mean later on. He's a precious dog, thank you for giving him a great home. If you decide to adopt Scout, she'll be lucky to have you as an owner. You'll know if it's right. Good luck.

I’m sorry for you loss. You are correct when it comes to vet bills, walks and such. It is quite a different story taking 2 of everything on doggie outings. However the joy of having 2 pets is wonderful.

There is only one thing more lovely than a greyhound, and that's two greyhounds. If you can manage the extra food and vet bills, I wouldn't hesitate for a second. I have four and they are the most loving, amazing, gang together.

Hi Magnus. Nice Chick. Try to convince the boss that she should be adopted as well. Good reasons to adopt a sister for you are: company for you when home alone and somebody to play with in the park. After all, a single dog does not make a pack.😁👍 Have a Nice weekend.

I’d love to get a second greyhound. The plus side is company for the first one and double the loves, but the negative side is double all the costs. Personally if could afford a second I would get another greyhound, possibly a girl. Good luck with your decision 🤞🏻🐾

Sadly, I can’t give the kind of feedback you are looking for because I don’t have any pets at the moment and have never owned two dogs at once. I did want to take a minute though to say that I love these videos and find them really comforting. Magnus seems like such a sweet boy and you guys are great owners who take excellent care of him. He and Scout seemed to hit it off and she is a beautiful dog too. Best of luck in making the decision and thanks for these videos.

Magnus is one of my heroes- what a handsome guy he is. I have had two greyhounds in my life - both ex-racers. My 1st gGreyhound Maximillion passed away at 14.5 years old the last minutes before the New Year in 2012. I cried for 5 months until the Vet at the Agua Caliente Track honored me with another male almost 5 years old. He was a carbon copy of Maxi. I named him Winstin. He passed away on March 4th at almost 13 years old. I hope to adopt two greyhound in 2 weeks

@@magnusgreyhound Thanks, I have enjoyed watching the handsome Magnus online for some time now. Yes Greyhounds are special. Actually, I believe that they are not dogs, but they arrived with the Anunaki Aliens who created the Human Species 150,000 years ago. One reason for this is their intelligence. Both Maximillian and Winstin proved to be smarter than many people I have met in my life. Also place your hands on the right and left side of Magnus's face covering his ears then look at that mug. If there ever was an alien look

Scout is a sweet little girl! She would make a wonderful sister for Magnus! And just think...every day in the garden can seem like a trip to the dog park! You're both such good pet parents and any hound would be fortunate to be part of your family. I am a big Magnus fan. Seeing his life filled with happiness and enrichment would be a no-brainer for me! The benefits here FAR outweigh any potential negatives. Follow your hearts!

My first greyhound was content being an only child I'm sure, but his personality has developed so much after adopting a second! We had him for a year before adopting our second, Fiona. He never used to play with toys or get super energetic except when it's feeding time. Now they play together and he has even started playing with toys!! They even cuddle sometimes. The vet has told me they cry when they are separated for shots and such. Very bonded now :)

I think it is positive that they are different gender. They complement each other. I think it is important to give magnus as much attention, affektion, etc as before when Scout comes to your home. That will help him feel as confident and relaxed and happy as possible in the new situation. And that will help Scout to feel safe and secure faster too. She will be more relaxed when not to much focus is on her, she can just adjust to all the new. And she will see Magnus as a rollmodel for her about how it is to live in your family.

Is a foster with intent option available? That is how we have always gone about adding another greyhound to our home. The adoption group allows a foster with intent for 2 weeks so the hounds can get used to each other. We love this option because it allowed us time to ensure the right match but also teaching a new hound house skills even if it was not a match. We have always had 2 hounds at a time and I have loved every minute of it.

It must be your decision and whether the two are compatible. In the videos they do look that way, and you’ve done the right thing by introducing them on neutral ground. The greatest benefit of bringing another hound into a home is that they learn from the incumbent. You don’t have to teach them much. Give them time to adjust, as they are still affected by the results of the racing and pet life is new to them. We note that it can be from two months to two years before greyhounds come out if their shells. With gentle support they will thrive. I’ve had four greys in staggered lots, my last girl Flash died only a few weeks ago, a week shy of her thirteenth birthday. Her buddy Fluffy (he’s not really fluffy) carried her collar around for a couple of days. Dogs tend to live ‘in the moment’ but - these are greyhounds. On balance, and if you can afford it, I would. Best of luck. If you need a push, think of the story of the man watching a small boy on a beach throwing one starfish after another back into the sea after a storm. There were thousands of starfish still lying on the sand, obviously washed in by that storm. The man approached the boy and said “There’s not much point doing that, there are too many starfish to save that it won’t matter if you throw a few back”. The boy looked at the man as he bent down and tossed another starfish into the sea, “it mattered to that one” he replied. Maybe Scout’s your starfish?

My heart goes out to you with the loss of Flash. They are forever in our heart.
Your reply is so balanced & the little boy with the starfish story is beautiful. My only thought was as long as they can afford 2 which it seems they can or would not be considering it.
They do get along well & she is a lovely little gal. I vote Yes... Mia (rescued) & Mom, 🐾❤️

Ultimately, only your family can make that decision, and there is nothing wrong with saying no, if it's not a right fit. Maybe consider fostering for a while, if that's an option? I've done it twice and confirmed that I'm not ready for a second dog, but it sure is fun to have a crazy new pup in the house for a while!!

We adopted our boy almost 2 months ago. Hermes is such a good boy and has brought so much joy and love to our home that we're considering adopting a girl too. There are so many greyhounds who need a home. I wish i could fill the house, i love them so much. We have the space, that's no problem. My concerns are walking 2 dogs, picking up after 2 dogs, driving with both, vet bills, pet insurance and food, eating arrangements. We've decided to wait for a while and revisit the idea.
    Good luck

I think having two greyhounds is a great idea, I have my own greyhound and been wishing the same. Like some already said, having a playmate that can keep up with Magnus is great - they keep each others company and tire each others out better when let running loose. Greyhounds love to "communicate" by running and rarely any other breed wants to do that and prefer wrestling over running.
Btw I started watching Magnus videos while I was waiting to have my own greyhound, glad to see he's doing great!

    Hallo
I am german and I see your channel, because I am a sigthound holder, Whippets from a breeder and Galgo espaniols from the animal protection ( far rom fear). Since mor than 20 years my wife an I have always 2 dogs , 1 Whippet and 1 Galgo (some years even 3, an Airdale more). It's a difference having 1 or 2 dogs, exspecially during your holidays, or you like visit restaurants with your dogs .We are camping in a caravan, so holidays are not our problem. We live in the Sauerland, a wooden area ca. 60 km south of Dortmund. A region with big forests and many does. That's a problem for the retired spanish hunting dogs. We can only walk with a 10 m flexi line for the Galgo. The free Whippet is not strong enough killing a doe. You have to line on 2 big dogs on your walks. I don't know, how much wild lives in your region.
We have the experience that our dogs, when the older one has died and we got a second new one, it needs ca. 1 month to get used for the back one at home to the newcomer. It's a difference to Magnus, playing with the new one outside, or he has to part his home with the new. Here is a female much better than a new male. The female musst be castrated, or it is more simple Magnus is it. It will take 16 to 20 weeks for Magnus being unable getting children. We have had this problem with a one year old castrated Galgo-Podenco-Mix and our hot female Whippet. The young castrated Mix knew what to do and even castrated he has nothing vorgotten. But all this problems are not so importent, that the advance and the gladness of 2 dogs let us going back to only one. I hope my school-english is well enough for you to understand me.
    With friendly regards
    George

If Magnus gets along with Scout, and Scout with him, which they do, that is the biggest hurdle. As you know and others have said you’ll just lose couch & floor space if you are both onboard with I would go ahead and adopt her. She would be a great companion somebody to keep him company.

we started with one and for most of their lives wound up with two. two is a nice dynamic. they bond they keep each other company. if something happens and you need to bandage one or you or your wife go out of the region for a short period one person can handle two easily. i think the pack dynamic works fairly well with two i think 3 or 4 causes more of a hierarchy and pecking order. i think that they are good in groups of two you have the experience with magnus and the breed two is a bit more expensive but very manageable.

The positives are - company. able to tire each other out & twice the love. The negatives could be at feeding time, jostling for your attention/affection and as you seem to have just moved, Magnus may still working out his new surroundings & could be a little anxious having a 2nd dog around at the moment. Having said all that, the dogs clearly get on well. I agree with the person who suggested the foster-to-adopt/trial period with Scout. A couple of weeks of that & you'll know exactly what decision to make.

Magnus seems anxious to impress Scout and after just a few minutes she was ready to join him in tearing up the field. I adopted my first greyhound , Bailey (a male), about 5 years ago. Two years later I met Glory ( No guts no glory was her racing name). It was suggested that I foster her for a couple of weeks, which I did. Greyhounds are used to being with other greys and I think they enjoy that companionship. I think that pairing a male and female or two females together works well. Two males may have issues in getting along . I didn’t have any problems and that companionship helped lessen Bailey’s separation anxiety. Scout would need to have her own space just like you have set up for Magnus. The two of you have done such an amazing job of easing Magnus into your home. I agree with another comment that the dogs choose you and let you think you are making the decision! I think Scout will make a wonderful addition to your family and a greyt companion for Magnus!

  • @lachimiste1
    @lachimiste1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I seem to recall that Magnus had a very hard time when you left the house early on. I assume that’s gotten easier for him 2 years on, but having a friend to be with might help ease any anxiety he still has. They seem to get on well enough for starters, and I don’t think they’ll make life worse for each other. The other consideration for you, I think, is space. I have American sensibilities of how much space is “enough,” so what we see of your home on video looks small to me, if you intend to put two large dogs in it. That’s just me, though. If you think you have enough space to accommodate two big dogs that need to be able to move around each other and around two humans with comfort and ease, then there’s no bar to bringing Scout home. The only other consideration is cost. Greys are big dogs. They eat a lot, and you’ll be doubling your vet bills. If that looks okay on your balance sheet, then I say go for it!

Hi , no we didn't have any problems. They got on fine from the off. It may have been different with another male but in my experience usually a bitch and dog will do well together. Our boy is 11 now, and new girl is almost 4. She's learned so quickly from him and was settled into a home / family life within a couple of weeks. Theyre great companions and shes put a spring back into his step. Good luck xx

Beautiful creatures ! I've always had different sorts of dogs and I think a dog shouldn't be left alone among humans but living with an other dog , no mater what type as long as they get along together. This way the dog doesen't stay alone when you're going out for a few hours, it can play , comunicate, rest with the other dog. So yes, I'm for having at least 2 dogs in the house. 🙂

We recently adopted a smaller dog and it has been a challenge taking care of 2 dogs instead of just our one greyhound. The costs will doubled with everything (vets, food, doggie day care, etc.,) However the joy of having two dogs is awesome.

My opinion that I always give when asked is this...if you have the space in your home for a 2nd, if you have done the math and can afford a 2nd greyhound, ie double the cost for monthly heartworm, flea/tick meds, vet expenses, boarding, food, etc...then yes, get another greyhound. They absolutely love having a buddy. We always have two non cat safe males in our house.

Had Grady for 2yrs and after a meet and greet at Battersea Dogs Home (Grady is also a Battersea dog) Lily joined him a year ago. Grady was always a little reserved but Lily totally changed that and her outgoing and curious personality has certainly rubbed off on him. It's difficult to judge how things will go and as you know the hound you meet in a shelter can be completely different once in a home environment. For me it was the best thing I've done and now have two very happy hounds who very much enjoy each others company. Of course sofa real estate is now at a premium. Looking forward to see how you, Magnus and Scout get on.

We have had her five months now, she's plays with the ball outside and is very much one of the gang😁

The good thing about Greyhounds is their temprament. If they are ex-racing greyhounds they are used to being around other dogs and get on well together. I used to work with racing greyhounds for 3 years, in all that time I only ever saw one fight.! The only problems you might have would possibly be food related. If you do decide to get a second dog make sure you introduce them to Magnus outside the home first before you take them home.

I think a second dog will be great for Magnus. I've found that females are more likely be the alfa. How do you think Magnus would adapt if so?

My greyhound doesn't like other dogs that much, so because I don't want to upset him again, I don't get a second dog, although I would love to.
The other reason is that he recently suffered an anxiety attack after being left with someone else for 2 nights. I do not work, so a quick visit to the vet cost me close to a weeks income. Three weeks later and he is almost back to normal, but I certainly couldn't afford vet bills for 2 dogs.
But mostly it is because he is happy alone and doesn't like to be bothered, and I don't want to change his personality by introducing another dog. (and my bed isn't big enough for 2 greyhounds)

I volunteer at a rescue kennel for greyhounds they have always been around other greyhounds at the farms [here in USA that's where they kennel racing hounds are kept or where they are bred]. they do seem happier and it helps with separation anxiety plus they get to play. Your cost for food /health care goes up, but I would not factor that in to my decision but that's me,
they all should have a friend.

absolutely adopt her, we have a male and female. we first adopted the female and she quickly adjusted to becoming a home pet. after that (2 months later) we adopted our male (Sherrie & Charles "Chuck"). The 2 keep each other company and they like to have fun together. Magnus and Scout seem very much at ease, however, when she enters Magnus home there could initially be some problems (or not). This will depend on the dogs, if there is an initial issue, I can say with great confidence that they will quickly overcome it. Greyhounds are very social and they like each others company. I would actually suggest to anyone that adopts a greyhound to have 2 or more if they can swing it. The only real downside is more to clean up and feed and vet visits, etc. However, if you go through all that with one, why not two? Adopting a second is highly recommended and I don't think you will regret it one bit. Scout seems adorable. Also, we have two crates and they each have a preference as to which one they like to sleep in.

My first dog had separation anxiety, so I fostered then adopted a second. Two is no more effort than one and is perhaps easier because the pack dynamic takes hold. Just make sure you get a dog with a complimentary personality to your first so the bickering is kept to a minimum....

Yes, adopt a second greyhound if you are able to. We have had greyhounds as part of our family for more than 30 years. Our first two greyhounds (Wheat and Icabod) were "singles" and they were fine without another dog in the house. Our third (Scarlett) was a shy (but not a spook) black girl greyhound. When we adopted her a "brother" (Rhett) she came out of her shell and became a total, lovable diva. When we lost Scarlett in a horrible accident, Rhett was lost without her. We adopted Dixie two months later and he came around. When we lost Rhett to old age, we were not in a position to adopt Dixie a brother or sister, but we did foster greyhounds at the time, so she wasn't always alone. When our last foster came into the house, Dixie pretty much seemed to tell here that it was okay to climb on the couch, and she "adopted" Miriam instantly. When Miriam's adoption fell through she found her forever home with us. When we lost Dixie, we adopted Miriam a brother (Pogo) about 1 year later. Unfortunately we lost him to bone cancer less than 2 years after adopting him. Since then, Miriam has been an only dog child since we are currently living in an apartment and are at our pet limit. While our kitty isn't a dog, he sometimes thinks he is a dog and he absolutely loves Miriam. So Miriam isn't completely alone when we are gone at work.
I say you should adopt another greyhound.

I say yes. Get one in proxy for me since the greyhound rescues won't adopt to me :p I was just denied adopting from a labrador rescue, too, because I don't have a yard! :/ It's very discouraging, especially when rescues don't ask further questions. Apparently only people with yards can be good dog owners or provide a good life for the dog to some rescues.
It looks like the two get along well :) if you guys can afford it and keep up with them, why not? I had my first dog for 7 years before we adopted a puppy and he kept her young and rejuvenated her. After that we always had more than one dog. They love buddies.

Our male seems to be getting along fine as an only dog, so maybe its just my wife and I :) Life just seems to be better with 2 hounds in the house. One thing i will say thats better about having one. We have often kept two dogs, and never had any problems with our dogs getting along together. We have had two different greyhounds with non-greyhound partners at different times (a shih-tzu and a Lhassa mix) but never two greys together. Both our greyhound boys had relatively low-prey drive and were not alphas, so I am sure that helped.
From what you have shown, it does seem that Magnus and Scout are likely to get along with each other, so unless one has hidden aggressive tendencies, I really doubt that you would have any serious problems given how well you have taken care of Magnus.

We adopted a second greyhound a few months ago. Having also fostered a couple more dogs before we adopted, it's all about the right mix with the dogs. We do think our girl is happier with a friend to keep her company. The issue was she had resource guarding over toys, so we had to find a dog that wasn't interested in them. You can't always tell from just a couple of "dates" , have to have them together at home to make sure it will work ou, but looks promising early on. We Don't regret getting the second 'hound.
