That's because as a 24 year old everything is new, first hand experiences and just start to gather them to express it to the best known way. As a 42 year one tends to exhaust their emotional resources and start to feel like it's all done and dusted, there's no out pour of anything that needs to be depicted in any form, tend to bogged down by wanting to be fresh and new! So, then you go back to the 80's to rekindle your mind to search for things that let you bring out the best!
It's the striving that makes the difference and hinders the creativity. Age 24 ideas flow effortlessly, without inhibition. Age 42 more data/memories have accumulated, then wanting to go "back", then striving to re-create based on past recorded information. The thing is the deepest level of our mind doesn't operate with the language of "past" or "future". Only the present or nowness, there's no time in there, time is only a mental construct. So instead of wanting to re-create or re-ignite the flames of the past, we can just tune in to the timeless flow, the stream, the vortex of creativity right away. How? By first letting go of the compulsion, the striving. Because in that flow, at that level, there is only continuous renewal, it's always new, the flow always happens in the present. It's only because we see from dualistic perspective that hinders the process, and creates a "need" from that limited point of view. In reality there is no 24 or 42. There is identifying with the "past" or recorded information, or entering into timelessness without self identification, a genuine fresh perspective. No judgement, no evaluation, just listening to the NOW.
Wow, I was thinking about song wriing senility just yesterday. Where does the passion go? maybe its like Dylan said - when you got nothing , you got nothing to lose - so you bet everything, you go all in.
I think it’s pretty simple in that you haven’t ever veered in certain directions so it’s easier to create because there’s no filter or mirror against what you’ve already done like John said. I’m getting the same thing with making beats rn. “Oh that’s just another Nick Mira like trap beat how can I make it better or newer” Timbaland is going the same way rn in what he’s trying to make. Dude doesn’t beatbox as much as he did on Future sex love sounds. Gotta keep evolving if you wanna keep it fresh.
YOU ENDED SAYING YOU STILL HAVE THE ENERGY OF THAT 24 YEAR OLD YOU.AND YOU ARE HOW OLD?----TO "KNOW" IT WILL ALWAYS BE SO - SHOULD ALWAYS BE SO ---NO EXCUSE FOR THAT NOT TO CONTINUE ?THE WISDOM YOU HAVE EARNED AND SHARE -AFTER SUCH A LONG TIME IN THIS HERE AND NOW ---BLOWS MY MIND ----like Bob Dylan said ----YOU ARE THE ANSWER LONG WAITED FOR ---FINALLY FREED - JUST "blowin in the wind"

I think the old vs. new creativity has to do with discovery vs. mastery as you age. It’s hard to devolve.
Totally Intellectual Conversion - Brilliant . 🏈
Day one is a good day! Cheers!!
I wish you guys would ask, "what's the next band idea for JOhn" not Dead and co. Is it the Trio? is it Nothing? is it Metallica? is it Keith Urban duo
Such good insight…ty
Wisdom and life experiences make 42 year olds more discerning about what they write.
Excellent I haven’t given much thought to have I already said it as much as does fit lyrically and does it sound good 🎼🎸🎶

Well there's another song idea....... Why should I have to slow down just because I'm 42 ?
It seems like somebody writes a song about everything I do so I stopped doing stuff.
I have no ideas for songs

John Mayer is the best songwriter of his generation hands down.
