    Clarification: at 0m46s I was referring to the Roman era disaster at Milos. I was NOT referring to the major eruption at Santorini which occurred long before the Roman republic or empire began.
    This might come as a surprise to many, but Milos is still a geologically active volcano. It just happens to be an order of magnitude less active than Nisyros or Santorini

      What roman era disaster are you talking about at santorini??? The last big eruption was 2000years BEFORE rome existed, so was there something happen more recently??

    • @Leyrann
      @Leyrann 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christianbuczko1481 Correction, a thousand years before Rome existed (and about 1500 before Rome became truly important), but you are right that "roman era" isn't quite accurate. It's better described as "bronze era".

    Milos is my favourite greek island. I have been there once and I was mesmerized by the natural beauty of the island. I can't wait to visit again because of the volcano. Thank you for the information, I was looking for a video like this everywhere

    Hey, I recommend you to take a look at the Cumbal and Azufral volcanoes in the south of Colombia. Those are located next to the Chiles- Cerro Negro complex. I was on the top of the Cumbal a couple of months ago and it's pretty impressive.
    Thanks for the great and informative videos!

    One minor correction - the very large recent eruption of Santorini / Thera which brought the end of the Minoan period does pre-date the Roman empire by of the order of 1000 years (the eruption being circa 1600BCE and the pre-cursors of the Roman Empire dating from not any earlier than 750 BCE), so it can't really be described as Roman period, where that at Milos can be so described. Fascinating video as usual though ...

    • @GeologyHub
      @GeologyHub  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I appear to have used a poor phrasing which was potentially misleading. I meant to say Roman era disaster in reference to Milos, not Santorini. Nothing even remotely close to the scale of Santorini can occur on Milos

    • @andyjackson3414
      @andyjackson3414 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a 200 year gap between the Minoan era eruption of Santorini and the replacement of the Minoans by the Mycenaeans. The volcano may have had a minor role in the decline of the Minoan Civilization, but other factors seemed to have been involved.

      Figure out if you like geochemistry and mapping. Familiarize yourself with equipment such as XRF. Understand why volcanic rocks form in different locations. Use mining or environmental geology as a fallback

    this is for anyone planning a holiday to greece.
    i strongly urge you to visit this island, Milos. it features the most diverse and complex scenery in greece.
    you will need to rent a car to visit some of the island's 'attractions', beaches and areas of unique geological interest, some rather weird and spectacular.

    • @costaliberta5969
      @costaliberta5969 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      food... is great.
      as always, look for traditional family restaurants, go through the specials, often cooked in limited quantities. they are not the cheapest but hey. and no fancy restaurants, ok? it's not that kind of island.
      fish... expensive, but you will never have any tastier. opt for the waiter's suggestions.
      there is a standard procedure... you ask them to *show you* the daily supply (differs every day according to the catch) where you go and see the available fish, their sizes, etc, know the cost. then you get to choose accordingly, on the spot, based on what the waiter will tell you. this way you get to know what you are eating and you get in touch with the hellenic marine life. you may even 'book' the fish of your choice before lunchtime.
      nightlife.
      adequate, fulfilling. there are great bars with easy-listening upfront music, no big fancy nightclubs (which is a good thing). always opt for cocktails.
      avoid any modern greek sound monstrosities.
      you will soon locate the bar with the best cocktails and you may not have to look any further.
      rule of thumb (same with restaurants): when you say the words, "that's the best thing i've ever had", don't look any further. i tend to visit the same place, even ordering the same thing over and over, just to take it in! but that's just me!
      you also get to know the people working there, and get a more personal and satisfactory service.

      hospitality.
      greeks can be the best and the worst. be prepared to be disappointed and don't be a karen, nobody will care, thankfully. it's a matter of finding the right people, the most genuine, true to themselves. which applies anywhere across the globe, i guess.
      luck.
      plays a big role but at least you *do* have the opportunity to find *the best* (and to *be* the best). trust your instincts, don't accept mediocresy, stay positive and try again. it helps if you are loaded but skip the attitude. try to mingle instead.
      Kimolos.
      the 'adjacent' island 10 mins 'ride'. hosts one of the most impressive descending caves in europe, home to the oldest stalagmite in europe. a must-go destination.
      feel free to ask me anything.a
      oh, and ignore the travel agencies' "popular" destinations.
      have a nice one, whatever you do.

    Some few mistakes here: The island at the NE is Kimolos, not Kimlos, where did you find that? Also the syllables of Methana are wrongly stressed. The 1st syllable must be stressed, not the 2nd one, ie Mëthana, not Methána. Please fix these...

      Look up "Ring of Fire". The whole Pacific is ringed with subduction zones that generate volcanoes in the same manner as described in this video.

    I would love to see a story on Black Point and Bolghinup Lake here in Western Australia. There are I believe only 2 known extinct volcanoes in WA. Black point is one the other is the Argyle kimberlite(?) pipe in the Kimberly rgion of WA. Cheers for the grat content I hooked. And sorry I will not use Pateron as they actively censor certain channels.

    Just a question: zbecause phreatic eruptions have occurred recently on Milos, are the people living on the island in danger of getting caught off guard by one such event?

    • @nortyfiner
      @nortyfiner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. We have learned the hard way at other volcanoes, such as Ontake in 2014 and Whakkari in 2019, that phreatic eruptions can happen any time with little to no warning, with lethal results for anyone unlucky enough to be nearby.

    Is Earth changing size (larger or smaller) due to tectonic plate movement?

    • @devoncampbell3607

      No.

    • @interstellarsurfer
      @interstellarsurfer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Fun question - the Earth's radius actually is getting slightly smaller as it cools, by about 0.1mm per year. The heat convecting off the core drives plate tectonics, so yes, it's part of the same process. 👍
