Yeah, sometimes I worry I will get tired of the huts but I still feel the enthusiasm of seeing them for the first time and thinking how awesome it is to have a house in the wilderness where you can stay for a day! It felt weird to step on wet rocks after going through a lot with the injury. But I was definitely stronger and healthier back when I was hiking regularly, as opposed to now when I am baking pies regularly! The human body just isn't designed to sit around and eat all day - it needs long walks.
Yes! Thank you. Our kids don't exactly love hiking so we don't force it. So it is a surprise when they occasionally want to go out there. I'm sure we will cherish the memory forever even though we both felt sort of tired the whole time.
Awesome video great to see you back out, I’d love to try this trail next year. Beautiful time lapse nights shots, great to see your daughter out with you as well! Thanks for posting
Great you’re back out on hikes and with your daughter too! Always liked Carter Notch and Lonesome Lakes huts with their smaller bunk rooms and less chance of being kept up all night from snoring common in the big bunk rooms. Nice new bog boards. Recall everyone in the hut when I went last year commenting how bad the old ones were. So we all just walked through the water with our packs. Always great views of the sky from the huts. Thanks for sharing…
Yes, those old bog boards were sketchy. Such a simple thing as a log across a river makes you appreciate the greatness of bridges! I love the simplicity of life in the woods. I mean I also like my own house with showers but it's all in the balance of such experiences I suppose.
I've definitely enjoyed your campground videos, but I'm so glad to see you back on the trails, "starting all over again". Can't wait to watch this later tonight!
Glad to see you out there moving well after the injury...What an amazing week of hiking weather we have had. I've been wearing my legs out on the maine side of the whites with a huge smile on my face.
I'm glad to see you are out hiking and made a return visit to Carter Hut. Cozy Carter is one of my favorite huts, tucked away in the back of the Wildcats and Carter Dome. The ponds, ramparts, and views are phenomenal. I hiked and stayed two nights there a few weeks ago. I also hiked the 19-mile Brook Trail, and certainly my body did know that I went hiking. Wonderful feeling of accomplishment. Congratulations, and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the good comment. I wanted to ask each person there all the questions you answer, like "Who are you and why have you come to this hut?" and "What is your hiking plan and where are you going next?" It is interesting to hear all the stories and perspectives.
Those classic hiking boots might have been best in some ways. I think I had some sort of like that too, a long time ago. These lightweight ones I wear on this trip are maybe too slick so I am planning to change over to some that have Vibram soles.
Oh hi! It is cool when people out there come around and see my video - thanks! It looked very cool watching people out on the rocks. I used to want to do everything myself for the experience but now I find that half the time, I enjoy the experience just as well by watching other people do it, as long as I get to take pictures still, which seems to be part of it for me. Thanks for saying hello.
On our way out from the hut, the sun was coming in and out of the clouds, casting light down like a giant spotlight. It was amazing to see. Got home and all my clips look different colors because the woods seemed purple, the trees were yellow, the light fluctuated... and all those were true!
Nice trip and glad your daughter joined you. Sorry the recovery on your leg has been a bit slow, but you will be back at the big hills soon enough. Thanks for taking us along!!
Nice walk and stay....good job. Many years ago running an AMC workshop, I did a pre breakfast run up 19 Mi Brook to see sleeping friends at Carter, then back down for the Pinkham morning feast. That saga could never happen now. You have some guts with your show and tell. Congrats.
We saw two trail runners on 19 Mi Brook Trail. They looked happy. The first mile is great for runners but then it seems pretty rocky. Trail Runners are just so good at footwork, like mountain goats! But yeah on a Saturday it would be practically impossible to dodge all the backpackers coming to and from the hut!
We stayed at Carter in June. It was in season so we got dinner and breakfast from the crew. It w as day 1 of a three day Wildcat, Carter and Moriah traverse. It was wet and rainy and we stay at Imp shelter the second night. Glad you’re back.
That sounds like a superb trip. You saved gas money by not driving back and forth for every peak, which is smart. And it would be epic to link the traverse together.
Yeah, she is a student learning about the impacts human construction and development has on the planet/environment. She is a happy city dweller but it's good she realizes the trees and rocks and river are of critical importance.
Ms. Richel, may I ask you a general question. I am planing to hike Mt. Adams on the Veteran day long weekend. So, do you think the conditions and weather be harsh during the November, in white mountain’s presidential ranges. Thanks 🙏
With those mountains, you must always prepare with maximum cautiousness. The weather can be harsh one day, and pleasant another day. The Mount Washington Weather Observatory has excellent weather reports for the higher summits. But also read their Mount Washington Valley Forecast so you can predict how conditions might change as you hike from the valley up towards the higher summits. Even if you have good weather, plan on cold temperatures overnight. Good luck!
Yes, off season. We have AMC memberships so it was 30 bucks each on this night. Bring your own food, use the kitchen, carry out all your trash. It just so happened that Zealand and Lonesome were closed on this weekend because they were switching from Full to Self-Service/Winter setups. So that is how we chose Carter. Most huts are closed during the winter but Carter, Zealand, and Lonesome are open year round. Not heated so you need a winter sleeping bag and long johns. But it can be a truly fun and unique experience to visit in winter!
Your video is a reminder that one doesn't have to summit these mountains to absorb their joys.
Yes!
Thanks for sharing! We love your videos. 🥾⛰🏕
Glad you like them! Thanks for the nice comment.
Thanks again and hope your foot is doing better now 🙏👍
Thank you. It is doing very well.
Pictures and fillings are all greatly done, as always.
Thank you so much 😃
So glad your back hiking! This weather has been incredible
Yes, the weather is so great and surprisingly steady for a long stretch. And the air is so fresh and clear!
I haven't stayed at Carter in many a year. One of my favorites of the huts. Especially in the off-season. Glad you are getting back out there!

Wonderful video and I love your daughter came along w you! Thanks for sharing! 🍁🍂🥾🥾⛺️❤️
Thanks. It was fun going together. She said something about having a "town trip" next time, ha ha...
Very nice hike. The facilities looks very good. Thanks for sharing. 👍7
Thanks. Yes, it is so fun to visit there.
Yay good to see you hiking again - with daughter added bonus. Kids follow by example. Good job mom.

Thanks. It's sort of an easy return to the trail but also feels hard to leave the comforts of my house. I hope my body takes the cue and gets fitter.
Glad to see you out there moving well after the injury...What an amazing week of hiking weather we have had. I've been wearing my legs out on the maine side of the whites with a huge smile on my face.
It's such a stretch of clear days! Maine is a huge treasure chest of trails to discover. I look forward to backpacking there at some point.
thank you so much, I always enjoy your videos for the beautiful content, and very much appreciate the editing... keep them coming!!
Thank you very much! I really enjoy making them and the editing part comes most naturally. I'm glad to have some viewers so I can keep doing it.

Good to see you're back!! I used to go backpacking with my Dad in NH and ME. That's when hiking boots were leather with the red laces lol 😄

It was nice meeting you up there! Great video! Traversing the Ramparts was quite a scramble but a lot of fun.

Thanks for sharing. Marvellous you're back from that leg/knee injury. Those clips after 06:41 to 07:06 are spectacular!

@@RachelWhelton Exactly. Best time of the day to shoot. Dappled sun is so exotic.

Nice trip and glad your daughter joined you. Sorry the recovery on your leg has been a bit slow, but you will be back at the big hills soon enough. Thanks for taking us along!!
Thanks, my pleasure. Making the video was fun and Ellie took some of the shots.
great you got over your injury and are hiking! I just got back from a 4 day BP on the AT.
What a great time of year to be out
That sounds great. My husband also likes multi-day and it is fascinating to see how he can just keep on trekking, whereas I seem to enjoy short trips.

awesome
Thx. I hope I get some more time out there before the deep freeze shows up.
My hiking buddy and I passed you two on our way down! Such a beautiful hike and a beautiful hut.
Ahhh - great! Good day to be out there. Thanks for the comment.
Glad you got out on such a nice fall day. The trail crew was replacing the log bridges when I went up in August. The second one only had one log 🪵 .
It was the challenge log crossing!
Clif Bloks are the best!
Yes, at the right time and place it is like a magic bite that fuels you uphill!
Nice to see kids enjoying nature instead of TikTok.

Found ya!

Thank you so much, for the heads up. And I will surely be well prepared. Thanks 🙏
If you don’t mind me asking, what was the fee for staying at the hut? I noticed you didn’t get meals which are usually included. Was it off season?

More like two sisters
Awww, thanks.
