Retro mode is pretty easy imo. I think if you're gonna get a game over, it's gonna be at the very start. Pretty sure I had 99 lives 3-4 worlds in. So yeah, it is ultimately pointless imo, unless you die like 40 times a stage.
It's about time there was a Crash game where full completion was really challenging, but, they really didn't need to give almost every level the Cold Hard Crash treatment.
Not since Mario Sunshine have I seen such an instance of taking a good game and then mangling it with a sole design mentality of just “how can we make this annoying?” This game aggressively sets out to piss off the player. It controls a lot better than the others but what they want from you and how they screw with you is ridiculous
The game's controls are amazing but they're chained down by ridiculous and bloated game designs such as long levels of non stop precision heavy platforming, masks powerups being busy work on top of busy work, crappy camera depth perception, and the repetitiveness of fully completing levels.

i’m pretty sure og crash 2 and 3, the bonus round only check pointed and saved the boxes in the bonus but not the rest of the level before you hit a real checkpoint. they fix that in the remake and even did it back in the huge adventure.
So to make sure I follow, if I hit a checkpoint, Break a Box outside a Bonus stage, then break 10 boxes in the Bonus stage (11 Boxes here). If I die between finishing the Bonus and reaching another Checkpoint box, I respawn outside the Bonus Stage, and I keep the 10 Bonus Boxes, but not the 1 "normal" box from before it unless I go back and break it again?
Bonus platforms acting as checkpoints was added in... Huge Adventure, I think? It wasn't in the original games (although the box you get the last of a set of Tawna tokens from in Crash 1 does change to a checkpoint afterwards), but it was added to N. Sane Trilogy.
Easy ways to tone down the completion, each level has; 3 Whumpa Fruit Gems - Get 80% of the fruit 1 Box Gem - Smash all the boxes 1 Hidden Gem - Find the hidden gem 1 N-Verted Gem - Beat the Inverted level 1 N Sanely Perfect - Complete the level without dying once, that’s it That would’ve made it considerable less tedious & frustrating. Also to unlock the costumes, just have a gem talley for all the level’s together, don’t tie it to a specific level.
Here's something I haven't seen anyone bring up: Why is Brio on Cortex's side again? His betrayal was a big part of Crash 2 and was completely absent from 3.
It's either he chooses the winning side when he feels like it or Toys For Bob didn't do their homework and didn't look at Crash 2 to see N Brio's defection, however in the Flashback tape levels Brio has said when Cortex wasn't there that he has a few moments of attempting to betray Cortex from the beginning.
"And my potion will make me--uhh--them unstoppable." It's pretty obvious that he joined Cortex's side only to betray Cortex again (as well as N Tropy tbh) possibly becuz of the Rift Generator.
The Crash Bandicoot wiki states that Cortex talks in perfect English accent. Although I usually don't trust such a source myself, I guess they got this one right.

YES! I couldn't wait for you guys to get to this game! Have to say, Caddicarus' Cortex impression is spot on. ^^ So, yes, Crash Bandicoot 4... If I just go from level to level attempting to get the box gem as I would do for any other Crash game then, I gotta say, this game is right up there with 2 and 3 in terms of quality. If I try to go for everything then it is one of the most painfully hard games I've ever experienced and all of that is because of dickish box placement in some levels and just the excessive amount of stuff the game wants you to collect would make DK64 proud. Also, I'm happy to learn I'm not the only one who doesn't level N.Verted levels. Yeah, the filters look nice for 5 minutes but it still requires you to fully complete the same level a second time and, to me, that is just needless padding. OK, I'm sorry what? The freaking PLATINUM relics are mandatory to 106% this game? I was planning on going back to Crash 4 one of these days to try and fully complete it once but, if that's the case, then screw that noise!
Despite the tedious 100% completion, I have to commend the game for having great accessability options. Colour blind filters, lives are optional, full button remapping and so many options for subtitles. I can comfortably read nearly all of the next in the game. The only exception being the terms and conditions. But I don't csre about that one. I know that last point doesn't sound like a big thing, but man. So many AAA games have really small text that I have to lean in to read. Like the menu text in spider man ps4. I just wished developers stopped designing menus for computer monitors and design them for tvs. Especially small ones
Oh God, even as someone that only needs glasses, I can’t imagine not being able to resize the text in modern games. Fallout 1 & 2 especially were really bad about having tiny as hell text back in the day, and I thought we were better than that

I can understand why some people disregard the bonus platforms as checkpoints accidentally. In the classic games, they sort of acted as checkpoints, but not really. If you died in a bonus stage, you would spawn back in front of the bonus platform again. But if you died anywhere else after that, you would spawn at the last checkpoint crate instead. Even if it was before the bonus you just did (Though it would still save the boxes broken in the bonus stage thankfully) I'm pretty sure N Sane Trilogy was the first game to use them as equals to checkpoint crates. People who skipped NST or have very little experience with it might not be used to that.
I feel like part of the reason Crash 4 is so bloated is that a traditional Crash experience doesn't have enough content to justify a 60 dollar price tag. I think they were better off cutting out the extra and dropping it to 40 bucks.
So to clarify for people who only know of what 106% is based on Caddy's video; 106% isn't necessarily tied towards platinum relics and N.Sanely Perfect relics. Those two alongside N.Verted gems, platinum medals for flashback stages as well as gold relics all add 2% each. You get 96% completion for just going from start to finish in all stages, both normal and N.Verted, with all regular and coloured gems, and beating all bosses in both normal and N.Verted. So out of the following five, those being; N.Verted gems Platinum medals for flashback stages Gold relics Platinum relics N.Sanely Perfect relics You only need to do two out of the following five if you just want 100% and obviously all five for 106% but it's not directly tied towards the perfect relics or platinum relics, you could end up doing those and not the other three(technically two since you get the gold relics anyways from platinum relics) which would mean the other items would be last depending on what you go for first or last.
I look forward to seeing the running commentary on this. I was one of the mad few who went for the Platinum Trophy/106% and it was both the best and worst experience I had with a game in 2020
oooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOO THIS FUCKING GAME. So... the base game itself, is fun, and a really damn good platformer. But when going for that dreaded 106, it becomes one of the worst completion experiences I've ever gone through. It took me 100 and a half hours. 2 to 3 of those hours I guarantee were from load times.
Yeah, Caddy hit the nail on the head with this game's difficulty issue: a casual run is far too easy for anyone who's experienced a Crash Game in their lifetime and 106% is a huge ballache. 100% is a good go between, as that allows you to choose between the perfect relics, flashback tapes or Time Trials. But leaving the game unfinished just hurt my inner completionist, so i suffered through 130+ hours (JRPG levels of time investment) to platinum this game. Even as a seasoned Crash veteran this game is next level brutal.
I honestly never minded the completionist stuff. I did 102%, because I've never really been into the time trials in any Crash game. But I just pecked away at the game for 1-3 hours a day, getting the regular clear gems as I went through the game the first time and everything else on a second pass. I finished it by the end of the year, with the costumes being a nice incentive to keep me going through the whole way. (Seriously, I don't usually give a shit about costumes in games, but the alternate skins in this game are pretty much all great). I probably would have gone insane if I'd tried to do it on a TH-camr's schedule, having to complete the game in a timely enough manner for your viewers. In my opinion the only thing that should've been cut is the N. Verted levels, which add nothing new to the experience.
Replaying Crash 4 again actually made me realise how unnecessary the Inverted levels are. That's the biggest problem with completing Crash 4 100% even if I have familiarised myself with it: It's too bloody time consuming. And I really wish they solve these loading times like N Sane because they are ridiculous. 😁
