I fucking love Noé as a character, he is my favorite character in the manga/anime. I like the gay tension that is sometimes in vanitas no carte, im not a vanoe shipper bc i dont think thats how their relationship feels to me. Its a really good and interesting friendship and i feel like the dynamic. I FUCKING LOVE THIS SHOW AND THE MANGA AND CIWJDBFIQKSNFOJEKWOFBDJWJWJEJ I NEED MOAR

i can’t even put to words how much i enjoyed this essay analyses on vanitas as a character!
i largely forgotten the show was in noe's pov, reading inbetween the lines and trying to figure out vanitas's deal. i was in the same boat baffled and absolutely invested the whole time. your video has also made me remember how much i enjoyed noe as a characteras well.
The way you broke everything down made me even much more love the layers and complexity in vanitas's character. what drives him what his psychology and belief's were and how he changes with conflicts challenging those closely held morals.
i have such deep respect and appreciation for such 3 dimensional characters and strive to be a storyteller of one.
    i fucking loved this video!!

this is easily the best vanitas analysis i have ever seen! You are so insightful and passionate about the show/manga! the point about vanitas being so repulsed by preferential behavior because of the torture he faced due to being moreau's favorite, struck me so hard! Same with how vanitas sees himself in Jeanne.. so maybe his intense compulsion to do anything to protect her and make her happy, could also be seen as some kind of redemption for his past self, kinda like "healing his inner child"..

I really enjoyed this video essay. It was excellent.
You also took the words right out of my mouth when you said their relationship is stronger than romance. That’s what I’ve always thought. I kind of see them as platonic partners the kind where they love each other (non romantic) and need each other in order to grow. Their relationship always felt so strong to me sometimes it gave me chills.
That being said I’m a huge VanitasxJeanne shipper. Their relationship is also about growth. They still have a strong and beautiful relationship but I think his relationship with Noe transcends that kind of like soulmates.
I love both characters but I actually like Noe better than Vanitas (still love him tho). He is much more open about his feeling and thoughts (of course because he is the narrator) and I really like his innocence and admiration for the world. Dude stands up for what he believes in and actually has the courage to get tough when he needs to.

It’s so nice to see a video essay that delves into the true depths of this series. I confess my love of this video has a little to do with the fact that I agree with like…95%? Of the points you make in it and I’ve been foolishly trying to talk with other people online about but only really get a handful that actually care.
This video is very well made in its analysis of the story, your sense of humor, your editing of the background, everything. It’s damn near perfect and a great treat for me as a VNC fan.
    I salute you 🫡
Hope you’re enjoying the new chapters now that the manga has come back.

I decided to rewatch "The Case Study of Vanitas" after 2 years and discovered how amazing storybuilding actually is and how complex characters really are. After that I fell in love with the show and manga.
I'm so happy I discovered your video because it's great. You definately deserve more viewers. Your analysis is on point and I love your humour. I subbed immediately.
With that being said I would like to share some of my thoughts.
I never considered Vanitas as a misogonist. Yes, he seems lika a shady guy. And yes, he will step up and say some offensive things but only for triggering a certain reaction. He always has an intention behind his words. It doesn't justify his actions but helps to understand him a little bit.
Also, Noé. How I adore Noé. He is my favourite character from the anime and manga. I find it interesting that he is a narrator of the story. At the end of episode one he says that he would kill Vanitas.
He would, not he did kill him. Which is more interesting because at the time he writes it he hasn't killed Vanitas yet. Moreover, we can talk about two Vanitas. The one is the title he inherited from Blue Moon clan's leader and the other one is Vanitas as a character (but it might be too far-fetched). Also, it makes me wonder why Noé writes the memoir in the first place. I feel like I'll be surprise by the outcome.
Also, I agree with you about Vanitas and Noé's relationship. As much as I love queer representation in the media. I would rather keep Vanitas and Noé's relationship purely platonic. They have a strong bond and their friendship is extraordinary. I think they are attracted to each other because how they fits together so well. The one makes up for the other's lacking and vice versa.
I can't wait for next chapters and the story to unfold ❤️.

    • @fafnirvt
      @fafnirvt  ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I'm glad you liked it!
And I'm glad that you never saw him that way, I just know that I've seen the word being tossed around a lot. I know it doesn't really justify his actions and he's still kind of a little shit, but as someone who has been discriminated against before it just rubs me the wrong way to see the word being tossed around even as a joke.
Noé my sweet summer child... I didn't even catch the "would" instead of "did", whoa! That's super interesting! I do wonder that a lot now after all the stuff with Teacher, because they were addressed to him at first. Lately it feels like that's been dropped, and I feel like lately he's been recovering more mentally than physically. Saying he's been sleeping through everything feels really deliberate, and I'm super curious where things are gonna go with him now that he knows so much more about the Blue Moon clan!
Exactly! Being able to make up for each others' flaws makes them a great team, but romance should never really be treated that way in my eyes.
Excited to see where the story goes too, thanks so much for your thoughts!

For me, I never saw Noé as a foil for vanitas. I still ship him w Vanitas, but they are both their own people! Its sad that a lot of people just see Noé as a counterpart to vanitas. They are both so interesting!
Also, I can understand where you are getting the 'they pay more attention to vanitas because he is white and Noé isnt' , and i can also understand, but i think that its more the personality that makes people more forgettable. It sounds harsh, but take for example bsd (please say you know what im talking about), the main character Atsushi, despite being the main character like Noé, is still not as recognised as some other characters in the anime, so I kinda think that it's because of his personality. I found both of the animes because I was looking for characters with the same personality as me, and it does also apply to real life in some ways? I think? I have brown skin, and from my point of view I get ignored quite a bit (compared to my friends who are all white apart from one guy), but I'm pretty sure that its because of my personality and the way I act when I'm around people.
I think I just overanalyzed everything but thats my take on what you were saying there 🙃 also I love your analysises (I dont think thats a word? Or maybe I just spelt it wrong)

    • @fafnirvt
      @fafnirvt  ปีที่แล้ว +10

Totally agree! I definitely understand how much people like the ship, but they're both so strong on their own it bums me out when people only focus on how they work together! 😭
Yeah, I know BSD and Atsushi! Haven't gotten around to watching all that much of it, but I definitely see where you're coming from! From what little I know, they're a lot alike! It still just kinda leaves a bad feeling in my gut. :/ I can't speak all that much for BSD obviously, but I do feel like the people that like Atsushi like him because he's Atsushi. While people that like Noé, half the time it feels like they only like him because they like shipping him with Vanitas if that makes sense? But it could definitely just be personal tastes, or the fact that Noé kinda feels like he avoids putting himself out there.
Overanalyzing is fun, that's why I started making vids! 😄 I'm glad you like them, it was fun to read your thoughts!

Pandora Hearts is absolutely amazing, I have not seen the same level of masterful writing YET from Vanitas no Carte mainly because it focuses on individual characters more than a general story that these characters are a part of. This is obviously not a bad thing since it feels like this is gonna go on for much much longer than Pandora Hearts did, it's more shoneny in the best way possible. The main thing that I absolutely loved about Pandora Hearts was the lack of information. You knew absolutely nothing when everyone in the story had a much better grasp on things than you did. The same thing is present in Vanitas no Carte however the biggest difference is how it makes you feel about the lack of information. In Pandora Hearts you were literally dropped in the middle of a completely and tightly connected story and things were very obviously happening because of reasons you didn't know and things were very obviously leading you to future events that were tied to the past you were clueless about and again, didn't really know. That sense of mystery was so great that it made every little bit of dialogue and panel feel important because no detail was useless they all had value as information in uncovering what the hell happened and what the hell will happen. In Vanitas no Carte it's different. The lack of info is there but it doesn't give the same feeling, I don't feel like things are happening that I need to know about right now. I mean they are happening but in way smaller portions compared to Pandora. It's not focusing on how you know nothing and not using it to it's advantage like Pandora did so you don't feel the need to learn what happened and learn what will happen and you just let the ride take you wherever. This obviously helps with fleshing out and developing the characters which Jun Mochizuki is once again proving she's an absolute god at doing so. But the loss of sense of urgency in things is making me not as excited to read the next chapter and making me care less which is hindering how highly I regard it as a piece of fiction. Still has great potential and I wanna see what Jun will do with this very long set up.

hi, I came across your video in search of an analysis of this series and I want to say that I didn't regret my time for a second, was it amazing?? I watched the anime once and reread the manga about three times, but I never noticed most of the details described here, it also helped me to understand Vanitas's attitude towards Jeanne more deeply (most of the fandom still does not like this spike mainly because of the "love at first sight" trope, as it considers it unnatural, however, the reason for Jeanne's attachment to Vanitas became obvious to me initially after revealing her childhood and the details of her profession and life), I also liked how you described Noah's love for vanitas, because I guessed it in many moments and this moment on the roof seemed to me the most revealing, but then I didn't quite I understood how it could be interpreted. I do not know if you are still analyzing the characters from Vanitas no carte and the plot, but I would be most interested to hear about Astolfo, Dominique, Roland and others, as well as their relationship with each other. so it was very cool, thank you

I hate to say it, but I think people are put off of Noe... because he's a himbo.
I'm not saying history and development aren't fascinating and complex. They are.
But. He is no-thoughts-head-empty so much of the time. And he is so strong. And so pretty. And unemployed.
We're habituated to treat characters like that as part of the setting. Our experience says, "This character is only eye candy, not actually important." This, despite the fact that textualy, he is extremely important. We gloss over his opinions and history because we expect the story to forget about them the moment they no longer serve the narrative.
This might even be an intentional choice, as Noe isn't the protagonist. The authors may have chosen such a perceptualy weak archetype to make sure there was no question that the story is about Vanitas, not Noe.
The unfortunate side effect is exactly what you mentioned, that most people think of Noe as a function of Vanitas, and not as a character in his own right.
The racism still totally could be a factor, I can't speak to that. But this was my thoughts.

Let's me be honest i did not like the fact that the author used the so called "love from first sight" (i just don't like it in so it's a personal opinion that maybe a lot of people can agree with)
If it was something slow with developing it would have been better.
In my opinion it is very off for a writer who has a good feel for characters to put in the story.
    About Vanoe
I started shipping that after i was done with the serious like im a person who prefers to see the story first then pick ships and stuff but let me be honest the serious could work without the ship's.
The whole thing im trying to imply is that Jeanne and Vanitas needed more time, the things between them happened very fast and thats why a lot of people see their love as a negative thing.
Rather than Vanitas and Noe you see them slowly building a trusting pattern and that's what makes people like it so much.
So yeah i love the video you really managed to show Vanitas as a character and i love the fact you brought up the problem in which people like to forget Noe just because of the ship and yeahh.
    Great video❤❤❤

@nobara-gw8jn you know this makes sence, when i went through the series. My head was going around the fact that if in the end Noe is writing it as a story, he mostly is trying to hide something from the readers with the uhhh distracting scenes(let's call em that).
I just wasn't sure what it was till you point it out but i do think Vanitas existed but he wasn't exactly what Noe remembers, probably he remade the memories in order to be easier with thw guilt and loss but who knows.
We can't read the authors mind and till she give us more hints we can only speculate. Thanks to bringing it to my attention thoo, now i will be looking more in to that possibility. Because ut really is possible😌😌
