    You guys literally took the XWF filter and added RFID and gave it a new PN just to sell the XWFE at a higher cost. Abhorrent business practice…

    It is obvious from the numerous posts regarding this matter that GE has a serious problem with their XWFE water filter. If GE is selling filters to Lowes, etc. to be resold then GE should stand by their product. My feeling is some accountant figured out a way to make a ton of money by selling through vendors and then not supporting their own product! I hope the CEO got a big enough year end bonus off this scam to retire early.

    Obviously, with so many people having problems with the XWFE filter, GE is at fault here. My fridge is 6 months old, and this was my first filter replacement. I purchased the replacement filter first from Amazon which stated that it was a GE Certified Filter, and got the error message when installing. I returned the filter to Amazon and ordered the filter from GE directly, waited weeks for the part, installed it and got the error message, so I am sticking my old filter back in and will return my fridge which is still under warranty

      My problem here is, the ice maker isn’t working at all, I replaced the filter, bought it on Amazon, and the water is coming perfectly, but no ice at all. The worst thing is, that isn’t my own house, and my landlord never call the people to fix it. 🥹

    Make sure you call GE and get a free Filter Bypass Plug. If your water is fine, just use the plug. If you want filtered water have the Bypass Plug on hand for when the filters give you an error message. I've ordered a plug after our filter exploded, water leaked through the fridge and damaged our hardwood floor. Hopefully the Bypass Plug will be tougher than their filters.

      I got the bypass plug directly from GE. The filter panel shows "bP" but the water still doesn't work. There is no "reset" button anywhere. I wish I'd bought a samsung.

      Curious, we purchased a GE Profile and it came with the plug. We've had the unit for 13 years now, and the front panel water filter light just lit recently. I purchased a filter, but can't seem to loosen the bypass plug! The bypass plug has been working just fine for 13 years, now I am thinking it's better to return the filter.

    Yep, another complaint about this crazy filter system. New fridge, GE sent me a bypass plug, I had to pay shipping. Now I'm getting Err and, of course, no ice or water. Customer service is a waste of time. Good job GE, I'd be proud of your service and product.

    Thanks for this! I have a GNE25 fridge and cannot get the arrows to line up when installing the XWFE filter (it's about 1/3 inch off). Water flowed from the dispenser for a while and then stopped. Do you -- or someone else -- have any insight into what might be happening?

      In 2022, there was a minor change in the design of the XWFE. The design at the top of this filter now has slots where the previous XWFE did not. It does not change how it fits into the filter head (port), though it may take a little more force to put it in and the arrows may not line up completely.

    Just tried to replace our water filter, which has been done religiously every 6 months, and now have the Error for the filter replacement. We have an XWFE filter, purchased at Lowes as we always have. This is where we purchased the refrigerator. How many filters do I have to purchase and return before I get one that does not give an error? It is not like we are purchasing an after market part. It is a Genuine GE XWFE filter.

    for side by side model cartridge installation, make sure you rotate the cartridge holder away from the frig, then line up the 2 holes, turn filter right quarter turn it will slip into place and is now ready to be gently pushed into support brackets..

    I am installing a new filter and I have everything lined up and inserted properly and when I try to use the water dispenser it says error. I’ve tried reinstalling it several times and tried resetting the filter status to no avail. It really shouldn’t be this complicated. And yes I’ve replaced filters a million times so I know what I’m doing and yes I purchased it from a reputable source so it’s not some knock-off.

      @@dannypetrisor2999 it was a defective filter. I returned it and bought another one and it worked. Someone who worked at Lowe’s said it is fairly common they’re defective. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    $100 a year for filters?! Just admit you did this to sell over priced water filters because the "non-GE" filter were eating up profits. I will never buy another GE appliance again if I have to purchase only GE filters, and I will make sure no one I know ever buys GE again.

      @@visa1960 It is the same filter but you must use the xwfe one if that's what your fridge needs. GE just slaps a RFID on the xwfe filter so your fridge will refuse to use a generic xwf filter. GE won't admit it (see the reply above) but they are doing this to force you to buy two of their ridiculously overpriced filters every year for $100.

    My refrigerator is only a couple of years old. I have replaced the filter once myself without issues. I just bought a brand new GE filter and keep getting the error message. Between this and the freezer handle falling off, it makes it hard to think about ever getting another GE.

    We purchased a GE filter from Lowe's where we purchased the fridge We have followed all instructions. Our filter will not reset. Still shows ERR! This is extremely frustrating for such an expensive purchase.

      This unit is 6 months old and a new water filter has me held hostage!!!!!!! ERR, I am so disappointed. Such an easy task has me frustrated. Even the old filter won't work now.

      I have the same exact problem. I have bought 4 (expensive) filters from two different places, they don't want to take them back if the packaging is open. When I put the new filters on the water stops working, then when I put the old filter back on the water works fine. Why are there so many people having the same problem? I stopped using the water from the fridge because I was getting sick. I now buy bottles water and can't use the ice maker either. I am hearing that the market may have been flooded with fake filters. What is GE doing about it? Do we need to organize a lawsuit? Sign me up!

    Our GE refrigerator was part of our builder package in our new home. We have the same issue with the ERR message when trying to replace the filter. Only works with the old one, we bought ours from Amazon, supposed to be genuine. Only a year old, so annoyed.

    Went to put in brand new XWFE GE certified filter. Received ERR error message. Reinserted the old filter and continue receiving ERR message.

    I purchased a 3-pack filter from GE's website and the first one worked fine a few months back. Yesterday I tried to replace my filter with a second one from my 3-pack and the water doesn’t come out and there is an ERR message. When I put back the previous filter it works normally. I tried the third from the pack and the same thing happens as with the second one. Are these defective? We followed the same process as the first time we changed. This is frustrating to be without filtered water after paying for the expensive GE filters directly from your website.

    Dec 25, 2022 waited 6 months for my prepaid in full GE GSS25 refrigerator. Went to change filteras light came on. Used a $60 GE XWFE filter . removed and installed as instructed in GE guide. Now I get "ERR" and no water to icemaker and water on door. CHnage back to old filter, wont work either. Help!!

      I just replaced my XWFE GE Water filter and am seeing an error and no water is flowing.
      It is an authentic GE XWFE.
      What do I do?
      This is the 3rd or 4th time I have changed the filter.
      This is the 1st time I am getting the error and no water.

    Bought a new filter from Lowes. GE filter XWFE, same one that came with the fridge. The new one will not work as after you push it in place you can not turn it to the right so it will work. Called GE, no help. Examined the new filter. The area around the nozzles on the new one has added plastic filler put in. The old one this is not there. When you put it in, you can not get it in far enough to be able to turn the filter so it can be used.

    I have attempted to replace the filter with a genuine GE filter, and just get "Err" on the fridge display. It will also not accept the old filter, same result. Can anyone advise?

      @@Oddball8760 Hey Tia! I learned that these filters expire, and the fridge knows that. Previously I had purchased 2 filters at the same time in order to be ready for the next replacement, but it "expired" while sitting unopened on my shelf so the fridge wouldn't take it, and because the old one had also expired it would not take it back in. Basically just have to order them as they expire, and DO NOT remove the bad one until the new one shows up.

      Per the article that we provided prior, you may see ERR on your display if there is no filter in place, you have a bad or damaged filter, the wrong filter is installed, or you're trying to use a non-GE filter.
      You may want to try replacing your filter to see if this helps. If you continue to have issues, you can try resetting the internal electronics by disconnecting power for about 30 seconds then restoring it. If this still doesn't help, service may be needed.     I had the same problem with the XWFE filters I bought directly from GE. I purchased a 3-pack and one, as GE customer support admitted, seems to be faulty. That’s a $50 filter. Radio silence from customer service when I asked if would get a replacement.

    I bought 6! New filters, GE XWFE and that new ones won’t let water go through or something. I get ERR message when I put that new one in! I tried three of them and all the same! They have the same numbers everywhere in them just like that one that came with my fridge. (Freezer bottom and French door top with interior water dispenser). Do I need to turn around 3 times and click my heels? What in the actual?

If you're seeing ERR on your display, it could be because of the following: there's no filter inserted, you have a bad/damaged filter, the wrong filter is being used, or you're trying to use a non-GE branded filter.     Same issue, installed a GENUINE, brand new GE filter and got the ERROR message! THIS is ridiculous! This will be the last GE appliance we will ever buy because apparently everyone on here is having the same issue. My refrigerator is under warranty AND I bought an extended warranty. So, the old filter is back on and we are NOT happy. I paid a LOT of money for the genuine filters only to play this game. GE should be ashamed of themselves. I am part of your consumer panel so I will make SURE to mention this issue and make other potential GE buyers aware that you can spend thousands for a GE refrigerator only to have issues replacing a stupid filter!

    Our first change since buying our place and we’ve tested three filters and are getting the error each time. We didn’t have the error before - just a red light saying it was time to change. I didn’t know this was going to come up automatically every six months. I thought the filter was spent. So disappointing.

    Frustrating! I just tried installing a new xwfe filter I received from Amazon. The err message is not going away. The older filter works, although is older than 6 months, but the new one doesn’t. Help!!!

      @@morenopaco Exactly! Before we moved, we had a similar ge fridge that’s as new in 2017 and used a different type of filter and never had any issues in 2+ years. The first time we have to change the filter on this new one and it’s awful. Wish they would just keep it simple.

    Hi. My model GNE25JSKNFSS has the filter reset at the top of the side by side when you open the doors. I press the filter status and it goes from red to blank after 3 seconds. I was thinking it would show green. What should I expect?

      Thanks for reaching out. Sorry to hear about the difficulties you've had here.
      After you change the filter, you must press and hold the RESET WATER FILTER pad until the red light goes off. The light will either disappear or turn green. If you do not hold the pad in, the red light will stay on. Also, if you hold the pad in for a long period of time the light may go off and then come back on.

      One of the best things to try is installing the new filter and then holding down on the dispenser for about 3 minutes, this can help any trapped air in the line and filter that cause the low pressure. If this doesn't work though please PM us and let us know.

      @@geappliances Hi its been about 35 days since the replacement. I believe that the filter has no air in it. My current flow rate [measured with a stopwatch] is about 80 seconds per quart... its equivalent is about 5 min 30 sec per gallon.

    Couldn''t figure this out until I watched this but if I had known that GE made their part NOT interchangeable easily I would have searched for another fridge to fit my built in space. Apparently you can take off the little tab that sticks on and use is on a less costly filter. I found another video that showed this. Got my filter through amazon and it works but next time I will try the cheaper version and move the plastic tab to it and see what happens. What a drag GE!

Counterfeit filters do not always meet the NSF/ANSI Drinking Water Treatment standards and can damage the refrigerator's filtration system.

      GE... that should be up to us to decide what's best and or affordable and if not, there should have been a huge warning on display models about being forced to buy your expensive ass filters. I'm pissed. Wish I could afford a new fridge and I tell everyone I know to never buy another GE product.

      Hi, Vivi. We hate to hear the water for your dispenser is not working. When reinstalling the filter as the video shows, be sure it is a genuine GEA filter. Many filters bought online claim to be genuine, but counterfeits will not work in the fridge. Next, check the water reservoir at the back at the fresh food section to make sure it has not frozen. If issues continue, service may be needed. - JB

    We have the XWFE filter. Put it in, held the red light button for 3 seconds, and nothing happened but a blink or two. No reset, no ice, no water. Fridge model is GSS25LSLSS.

    ⁠​​⁠@geappliances we are having the error code issue. We have only had the fridge for 7 months and this is the first time we cha fed the filter after the original install. We followed the directions but cannot get rid of the error code. We even tried flipping our circuit breaker to reset the fridge. We were installing a brand new legit correct filter. We then tried to put the old one back in and still receive the error code. This is incredibly frustrating!!

We correctly installed a legit filter we bought from Lowe’s, exactly the same as the one we were replacing. We tried to put the original back in and that won’t work either. We need water and ice!! 😭

AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) through partnerships with NSF, IAPMO and WQA tested and found counterfeit filters do not always meet the NSF/ANSI Drinking Water Treatment standards and can damage the refrigerator's filtration system. Many counterfeit filters are sold online and have been known to burst and/or leak, potentially resulting in costly property damage. Many counterfeit filters claim to be "exactly" the same as a GE Appliances Genuine filter but often only filter chlorine, taste and odor and are not certified to reduce harmful contaminants such as lead, mercury, arsenic, VOCs and pharmaceuticals.

    my filter didn't have a chip on it. so i took the chip off my old filter and now it worked

    I've flushed the system, I did over 2 gallons. Thought it was fine. This was done last week. I just noticed my cup had black specks in it. We've used well over 3 gallons. There's still stuff in it. It isn't from the ice either, because I put just water in it.

    I just installed a new filter (XWFW) bought from Home Depot where I purchased my fridge. The new filter had a leak alarm after 4 days. I removed and reinstalled the filter. Received the same leak error. I removed it and reinstalled it and received an error message. I contacted Home Depot and they replaced the filter. I am still getting an "Error" when pressing the filter button. What is the next step?

      I went back to Lowe’s and returned the defective filter and purchased another one and it worked. The salesman said it’s been common for them not to work since GE put the sensors on them.

      Thank you for reaching out. If you have purchased a filter from our parts page, we don't foresee you having issues with it. The filter should be replaced about every 6 months, but this can vary depending on the quality of your water. If you see the water from your dispenser coming out slowly, that's a good sign that you should replace your filter.

    Went to replace my GE fridge water filter with a genuine GE XWFE water filter and now I get an error message and no water comes out. If I put the old filter back in, it works.

    6 separate filters were tried now and still have the same Err message. They are XWFE filters for the GFE26JYMNFFS. Both bought from GE.

    I have the same issue most do, this is a 7 month old fridge that the filter light will not turn off. I have purchased 2 filters already this is an issue

    GE looks like people are not happy with the replacement water filters not working. We have the same problem as others commenting. The replacement does not work but the original filter still does. You answer people but yet I do not see a solution. Plus the filters are EXPENSIVE!

This enables refrigerators to shut down the water valve when a leak is detected at the filter.     Bought 2 XWFE filters to save time of not having to go to Lowe’s every 6 months. Just installed the spare brand new filter & it didn’t freaking work. What a waste of $50!!! I wish they would say they have a shelf life of 6 months. Crazy enough is GE sends offers to order more than 1 filter at a time. Give my $50 back thieves!!!

      Refrigerator filters do not have a "use by" or expiration date. Unopened and unused filter do not have a limited shelf life as long as they are stored in a dry place.     Just installed a new replacement filter (7/3/23) purchased through Amazon. The old filter was 8 months old. I twisted the new filter in thinking it was in and tried the water; it showed "ERROR." I then took the filter and gently turned the filter a little more to the right....bingo, the filter moved in and the ERROR message disappeared. (whew!).

      Unreal, 6 month old refrigerator and on it's first filter change the refrigerator will not recognize the brand new GE Filter. Despite many attempts of reinstalling and attempting to reset the filter status still coming up with the ERR message. Even attempted to reinstall the original filter to no avail. Judging by all the comments I would assume that GE would have addressed this issue. Now I am without water or ice for however long it takes for an authorized repairman to come and attempt to fix the issue. Why would a manufacturer engineer such a ridiculous feature just to complicate matters? BTW I was a Senior Field Engineer for a major computer manufacturer and if I couldn't address the problem without a fix, How do you expect the average Layperson to fix it? Extremely frustrated. I have been a loyal customer to GE for many years. The outcome of this being addressed in a timely fashion will determine my loyalty. Just saying

    Damn, this isn’t good news reading these issues. I too have a 6 month old fridge. Just tried changing the filter from a (3pk) Not only do I get a ERR msg, it doesn’t fully lineup either the mark like the original filter. 🤬🤬🤬

    I had an issue replacing the filter and kept getting the "Leak" error. Fridge was new and under warranty so they sent someone out to come take a look. The repair service worker was able to get the filter to start dispensing water by completely wiping off the water on the filter and the filter fridge connector. If it detects any kind of water, it produces this error. Kind of silly knowing that part of replacing the filter makes water come out.
    My arrow also didn't line up all the way and was slightly off, but still worked. 🤷‍♀ Good luck everyone!

      If you are seeing the ERR displayed on your control panel, the issue could be the water valve is deactivated and there will be no water or ice dispensed, the filter status indicator light will flash red. To resolve this issue, please replace the filter or if you have a by-pass plug try inserting that to see if the error goes away.     Unfortunately, I also struggled with the filter problem for days before I found the solution! GE solved it with a chip, so that only its own filters can be used, it cannot be replaced with a filter from another party, only the one in which the chip was installed! (rough) So the XWFE types have a chip, while the XWF type does not! The only solution is to buy a GE chipped filter, which unfortunately costs approx. $50! The aftermarket, but replaceable XWF type is not good, because it does not have a chip!

    6months in and changing the filter. Bought 2 XWFE filters from Lowe's and neither worked. Pressed restart, unplugged the fridge even. Held the dispenser down for over 5 minutes. NOTHING! Considering returning the whole fridge back to Costco so i don't have to deal with this again in 6 months

      JB, I'm very confident I have installed the filter correctly. I realized last night that NO water is even flowing into the new filter. How likely is it the water is frozen in the door, or the scanner that reads the filter is not working?

In this case, we suggest exchanging for a new XWFE filter or using the bypass plug temporarily (with the RFID chip) for your model. This will re-activate the water valve for your unit.     Never again will I purchase another GE product. I had a GE washer and dryer in my cart and went to add replacement water filters to my cart. This water filter with the RFID chip was a total DB move! So now we can only buy GE XWFE filters at more twice the price of the the XWF and generics?! Same dang filter, and you just added the chip. Needless to say, I removed the GE washer and dryer from my cart and replaced them with LG brand.

I just moved into a rental and I cleaned the whole inside and wanted to replace to the filter for a fresh start not using the same filter as the last family. The rental company isn’t going to help properly. Please help.

      When I unplug the fridge it’ll work for a minute and then stop.

      I also figured out how to reset it by doing T12. That’s not working either.

      The refrigerator model you provided requires a MWF or XWF (on select models manufactured after June 2018) model water filter. Is this the water filter you purchased? If you purchased the incorrect water filter, it will not work properly.

      Hi, Mykell! If your dispenser is not working after installing a new filter, try reinstalling the filter to make sure it is properly seated, and disconnect the fridge from power for a few minutes to reset the unit. Also, make sure the filter is GEA genuine and purchased at a reputable dealer. Many filters bought online can be counterfeit and will not work in our refrigerators. Please let us know if you continue to have issues. - JB

    Narrator says to remove by rotating left, video shows rotating to the right. Same reversed instructions vs modeling.

    So stupid there’s a chip in the label and you can’t use a generic filter bc they don’t have the chips. However, I purchased very expensive OEM filters and they don’t trip the trip system to work. Nice, charge me a lot, then don’t work. Thanks GE.

      We always recommend filters manufactured by GEA and sold by our official retail partners because out filters help prevent water leaks. The RFID (radio frequency identification) component is part of the overall system that communicates with the refrigerator and shuts off the water supply in the event a leak is detected. Counterfeit filters without this technology will not perform the same way in the event of a water leak.

    My refrigerator is 6 months old, and I just ordered the filter from GE’s website. I paid for overnight delivery and it took 3 days to get it. I finally get it and now I am getting an ERR message. Guess I have to call GE smh so tedious.

    We need to learn how to hack these filters to not use the GE ones. I see a video on the TH-cam sidebar about how to hack these. I will check and see if that works because I'm not paying $60 for one filter.

      I paid $45 for mine on Amazon. Still a lot but less than $60!

    I genuinely cannot wait to carve the RFID tag from my $50 replacement filter and smack it right onto every $7 generic filter for the rest of my ownership of this fridge. I would have never bought this refrigerator if I knew that you RFID-locked your filters, what a shitty feature.

We don't recommend altering your filter or using a non-GE filter in your fridge as we've not tested or approved the unit with that in mind.       You don’t have to carve it out from the XWFE models, you can simply heat up the label with a heat gun or hairdryer and pull the label off. The RFID is embedded in the label itself. Be careful not to tear the RFID tag part up, or it won’t work anymore
