Stairway to Heaven: Vito Kills Derek and Steve and Avenges His Father's Death (Mafia 2)

Chapter 14: Stairway to Heaven. Gameplay on Medium.
You start off at Marty's apartment. Joe calls you that he will come and pick you up and continue to make plans to pay back Bruno. Although, Joe says that first they have a job from Eddie.
After you leave Marty's apartment and down stairs outside to meet with Joe, Joe is standing next to a Smith Thunderbolt car, saying that Eddie has supplied them with it just for this job. Joe then says that they are going to Greenfield so get into the car with Joe and drive to Greenfield, but don't wreck the car. On the way there, Joe explains their hit. A family from outside Empire Bay has ordered the hit on an informant that they've managed to locate in Empire Bay. The target could be under witness protection.
When they arrive at the house, they see an old man (which is their target of course) in his 50s watering his front lawn. A short cutscene occurs, reenacting the ending of the first game as Vito and Joe execute the man on his front lawn.
When this ends, police will start to hunt you down and chase you though they are easy to escape, and even easier if you take a right, which leads to a repair shop. After you escape the police, Joe gives a share of his money, before he tells you to drop him off at Kingston. When you arrive and drop Joe off at Kingston, he leaves to collect his half of the $55,000. He also tells Vito to see Derek for an opportunity to make more money.

Vito drives down to the docks triggering a cutscene with Derek and Steve loading their guns about to teach some striking workers a lesson. Vito agrees to help, and makes his way down to one of the warehouses where the strike is about to take place.
It is here that one of the dockworkers reveal the truth about the death of Vito's father Antonio. Steve had apparently murdered Antonio on Derek's orders, drowning him to make it look like an accident from his drunken behavior. Angered by this revelation, Vito turns against Steve and Derek.
Steve and his henchmen is close to the start of this gunfight on the docks. Some of the dockworkers will help you during this scene. However, you will be alone when you face off against Derek and his henchmen in the warehouse. Derek will throw molotov cocktails down on you from the second level. Try to dodge these and make your way up stairs to Derek's office where you can eliminate him and the rest of his goons in relative safety.
Once Derek is finally dead, enter his office, Vito can find his 'retirement fund' on his desk. The amount received depends on how much money you currently have, it can be as low as $1000 to upwards of $26,000. Take this which will get you closer to the $27,500 you need to pay off your half of your debt to Bruno.
Here are hints that you can easily assassinate Derek and his goons: Drive your car straight into the warehouse to the end under the catwalk, kill the two workers standing behind the pillar, angle the car so you're facing the gastank (so they cant shoot it), and get rid of the remaining workers that come down the stairs, then stand just out of the catwalk (If they're shooting at you you're too far out), and throw grenades at Derek by angling them at the ceiling over the catwalk, and rushing out to pick off any remaining shooters. The money is yours and your car will automatically reappear outside because the warehouse doors don't reopen.
Another easy way: Drive your car into the water, the big warehouse door will close but the door to Derek's office will open. Just take cover behind the window and take out the guys who come up the stairs (a shotgun is recommended). When there are not many guys left take cover behind te crates upstairs and finish Derek either with the Molotov cocktails that lie on the crates or another weapon.
When you are finished at the docks you need to make some extra cash by either delivering cars to Mike Bruski or robbing stores. Gun stores usually carry about $400-600 each (along with free ammo) if the player manages to get rid of the cashier in time. The player can also rob Vangel's and can obtain a free coat on the way out. Once you've earned enough, head to Joe's to trigger the next cutscene.
However, it appears Joe isn't at home...

I remember the derek mission was so hard, they kept killing me with those damn molotovs
There's an easier way to complete the shootout. Once you have killed Steve, get in your car and drive into water. When you respawn, the office to Derek's office will be unlocked and you can kill him easily, since his molotovs won't reach you in the office and there's more place to take cover.
Ikr its the hardest mission to me
I passed this game on hard. After you kill Steve and all the guys outside, run into the warehouse all the way to the back make sure you have grenades and smg ammo. When you get all the way to the back throw some grenades up where derrick is at and you'll know your done when you hear vito talking.
I played that part with gamepad + hardest difficulty. It was tough.

Hey calmed down alright can't pounce on Mafia III. So what? They fucked up on release and you want to say "even better". Mafia III and II are practically in the same ballpark. Mafia II was about a little boy who wanted to be known as those gangsters who ran everything. Mafia III was about a black man, raised without a mother or father who is betrayed by over-powered whites who evade his world and tear it down.
Jesus I want this shit to stop it's annoying as Christ. I've been alive for decades and I've heard enough criticism in my life yet everybody ragging on Mafia III it's baffled me. Nobody in the fan-base can make up their damn mind.

you know that Derek in real life wouldn't let Vito alive with the weapon in his hand, to give him that opportunity to revenge his father. So the story is not really good. But is still nice :))

The lighting in in this game was way ahead of it's time. Not to mention, the story, characters and the plot, absolutely perfect.
I had a feeling that Steve would betray Derek -- as he would sometimes seems quietly frustrated by him. He would have made an awesome enforcer on Vito's side, too bad he had to kill Vito's pop.

I remember this mission being insanely hard. I always died when I got to the warehouse. Took me at least 20 tries. And there should've been a cutscene for their deaths at least
I just ran straight forward under derek that was much easier to kill them the molotovs do not hit you from there... you'll get creative if you always loose 😂
I just realized that when Vito told Frank he had no reason to mistreat him and Joe; Vinci never once brought up Vito killing Derek and Steve. Even if he didn't know Vito was the one responsible for their death, it really shows Derek and Steve meant nothing to Frank.
not even Leo mentioning when, Leo and Triad Boss pick up Vito in final mission.
To be fair, Vito just killed derek and steve a few hours before Vinci’s men captured him. Or should that have been enough time for Vinci to know that Steve and Derek were killed?
@@ryanvasquez2914 I doubt Vinci knew it was Vito. Derek, Steve and their men were all killed and the longshoremen assured Vito that they'd testify he was never there. As far as the cops are concerned, it was a labour dispute that escalated to a firefight due to Derek's own aggression. To Vinci, it would just be one more headache of the long line of fuck ups that week.

Didn't get to play much of this game, but I'd heard that this happened. Watching this at first I thought he was a random nobody, but the scene seemed too dramatic and something seemed off. So I scrolled down and sure enough it's Vito killing the dude from Mafia 1.
That's sad as fuck and took balls for the devs to do that.

This chapter right shows you that despite the appearances of Vinci he had hell of muscle and power to pull this off. This chapter also shows you the true dark world they chose to live in.
And Frank Vinci is the only one of the Dons who still believes in the old ways. Whereas Carlo Falcone and Alberto Clemente didn't: Carlo was dealing drugs and Alberto charged a fee for being made a member.

For everybody having the problem with the loading, you have to play the chapter on hard. And if you bought Joe's Adventures dlc you have to play that on medium. I don't know about Jimmy's Betreyal or Vandetta, tell me if you know.

Actually no. 2k Czech games forced HANGAR 13 to release Mafia 3 too early. Mafia 3 is a good game but it's unfinished.
Alfredo honestly, you can tell the current build of the game with multiple outfits and car customization is what they wanted at release but just couldn’t due to what you said. It’s a shame cause I honestly love that game despite all the shit talk it gets.

First part was easy, once I got inside I figured you can control when and where they throw molotovs.

I did it and it was fucking hard. Took me like 12 successive tries until I finally managed too do it. Get in cover, clean shot and take them out one by one but these fucking molotovs made it so tough. Can't get a good shot of him but you need to get up there in order to kill him ... Not to mention the bad checkpoint

I find it quite ironic how in Mafia 1 the situation Angelo finds himself in is realistic, it portrays the harshness of the families, while in Mafia 2 we get a more glossed over glorification of organized crime. Along with one of the two games mentions being drastically gutted of content, I find it hilarious how different the attitudes of the two stand out.
