    Check the Fleet Pride truck parts store in Tulsa. The one in OKC at one time sold bulk antifreeze from a gas pump and also def fluid. Some junk yards sell filtered reclaimed coolant. Also look at a product called Redline water wetter. You can run straight water and add that to prevent corrosion. Race cars typically don't run antifreeze because in the event of a leak; they don't want it on the track. So look into various coolant additives that will allow you to run straight water and still have anti corrosion protection. They also sell antifreeze by the 55 gal drum. Some of those lube trucks that service construction equipment have tanks and pumps of oil and what not for the tractors. Might see if they have coolant onboard and the price. I think an additive so you can run straight water would be the cheapest option.

    Naval architect shows up at the painting stage. Perfect timing.
    Note on the question of using antifreeze for the keel cooler system: the engine that is there was taken out of a school bus, if I remember correctly. When it was in there, it used an antifreeze mix. So, it would be best to put in a 50/50 mix of long life antifreeze and distilled water. Premix is fine. Just don't use tap water, even if it is well water. The dissolved salts and additives in tap or well water will reduce the lifespan of the coolant, cause slow damage to seals on the water pump, and will form scaling that will act as an insulator inside the cooling system and engine block, causing reduced cooling efficiency. The mix will also reduce the vapor pressure, raising the boiling point of the coolant and reducing the loss of coolant to evaporation.
    You can run just distilled water in the system, but you will get rust, flaking, rapid evaporation of coolant, and reduced water pump life. In an emergency, you could even run sea water, but flushing with fresh water and then replacing it with fresh coolant or even just fresh water of any type would need to be done ASAP. Also, don't let the system sit dry after running any improvised coolant in it even if it means leaving sea water in there for longer. Having the system drained will cause a lot of rusting if antifreeze mix wasn't the last thing in there, especially if you ran sea water in it. The water pump is designed to have at least 50/50 mix to help lubricate it and prevent corrosion and all the problems that causes, like chunks of rust floating in the system and wearing away seals and gaskets. You can even get blockages of rust in the engine block cooling galleries.
    Also, I would carry a few spare pressure caps for the system. Having one go bad while out at sea in tropical seas would be a real problem, but I assume you have already planned for this. It is your boat and your time to fix problems with it, so this is just advise to make your life easier and the engine more reliable.

    • @zuestoots5176
      @zuestoots5176 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      he could use just plain water with water wetter to prevent corrosion, increase boiling temp and lubricate the pump. It also lowers engine temps by about 10 degrees over water alone and cool down time seems to be quicker, not like that matters for his application. The stuff literally decreases the surface tension of water.
      Exactly what we run in our race cars, mainly because we are not allowed to run glycol

    • @KnightsWithoutATable
      @KnightsWithoutATable 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @UCD_g2jXGHJyNZ2e5LS_H5WQ There is a serious difference between the two on quality of coolant for engines running for days and needing to be reliable. Race cars replace or much more often than a consumer engine.

    • @p.t.anderson1593
      @p.t.anderson1593 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd also like to recommend distilled water and an antifreeze 50/50 mix. Remember what the paint... sorry, coatings inspector said about surface preparation and salt? That is the why behind the distilled water... Like KnightWithoutATable mentioned, there is other stuff going on with "anti-freeze" like lubrication for seals, corrosion inhibitors, stuff to preserve gaskets and other stuff too.
      If you're wondering how to get those kinds of quantities I've seen it in 55 gallon drums at truck repair shops. They might sell you some or tell you where they got it..?

    • @p.t.anderson1593
      @p.t.anderson1593 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@KnightsWithoutATable It is my understanding that water wetter is used on race cars when antifreeze is not allowed by the rules of circuit racing. Regular antifreeze is so slippery and so difficult to clean up that it poses a severe safety hazard to other racers in the event of a spill on track. I could be wrong but SV Seeker doesn't strike me as a race boat and if it's ever on a race track... something went seriously wrong. I'm totally with you on this one, 50/50 mix of distilled water and the correct antifreeze for that engine.

    • @p.t.anderson1593
      @p.t.anderson1593 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Brandon S Yes! Salt, for example, is a pretty normal mineral to find in tap water. Not like a lot but enough to cause corrosion on the insides of an engine and the rest of the cooling system. All those surfaces that cannot be protected with a layer of paint...

      @@SVSeeker th-cam.com/video/OlWnc3pbqjQ/w-d-xo.html You want some lubricity, anti-fungal, rust prevention, and anti-freeze properties, but all those things lower the thermal mass and usually the thermal conductivity too. Water is the best coolant, it just needs a little help from some friends. So just find a good additive and use good tap water, test it if you want. You should also be able to contact one of the coolant additive companies and ask about marine applications and water guidelines. Just got me thinking and I didn't see a good answer quick.

    Interesting to hear about the regulations for recreational craft. Surprisingly here in New Zealand there is way less regulation around recreation vessels than you have in the US. Here there is no registration, if you are under 6M (20 feet) you have to have lifejackets for each person, but this is local authority regs. You see some stupid people out there 6 people in a 16' runabout with old kapok jackets stuffed up in the bow .

    Hi Doug. Your boat is looking amazing. I'm so very impressed. Looks like you're nearly done with all the sandblasting. What a shame you couldn't wait for me to bring out my sandblasting rig and work with you. I was so looking forward to hauling it from Jacksonville Florida to your place. But I totally understand that you could not just sit still waiting on me to come blast with you. It saddens me that I could not pull free fast enough to join you.
    But I'm so proud of you and all of what you've done. When people ask me who I admire, I"m hard-pressed to name anyone. But you're at the top of the list. Yeah you're a hard worker, but what really impresses me is your eagerness to learn so many various different skill sets and pull them all together to make one result that typically takes a highly trained team of different experts.
    With me running a welding, fabrication & repair shop, plus my commercial sandblasting, I feel I can understand your many "responsibility" hats you wear. You're like me in that you're unable to turn down learning and mastering a new skill set because no one else but yourself will give you the result you need in the fashion that will suit you.
    You are (were) an IT guy Doug. But you learned welding, fabrication, casting and so many more. I'm a mechanic, welder, designer, fabricator, professional sandblaster, and I just had to acquire more skill & learning on how to build websites.
    jacksonville-florida-sandblasting.com/
    That new website is the reason why I could not come join you. It has 200 man-hours into building it (& it only has one page), not counting all the studying and learning I had to go through to achieve it. You are one of the people I admire most Doug. Not because you built a boat, but because of all you had to overcome and learn to achieve the result of building a boat. Because you push aside anything that is in the realm of excuse manufacturing and you stick to it until you manufacture top-notch results. You refuse to name any excuses while your tunnel visioned on producing that result.
    You have many motivational signs on your boat. Here's one from me.
    "Victimosis" the #1 most common disease that kills dreams that could have come true because the victim had the disease of only being able to find and point blame at others why they could not do X.
    Maybe we will eventually get together someday Doug. I would really love to meet you in person and not just talk on the ph.
    My hats off to you Doug. Best wishes. Chris

      Love the new web site! And I would love to meet you someday and see your operation. It would have been fun to have you out, but besides being a long way, it has actually worked out very nicely for me to be able to blast small sections at a time. There has been a lot more time in grinding welds, and welding spots I missed than I ever imagined. And once off the fix and cleanup work is done I can put on a gallon or two of paint and then move on to another section. Thanks again.

    Make your own Antifreeze its essentially Ethylene glycol and Propylene glycol which you can mix water into. You can buy those in bulk from chemical suppliers mostly ones tied to the petrochemical industry. I can't really help as I am not in the USA but half a world away I could :) ask a friendly paint chemist there's sure to be one nearby. Usually you can get it in 200l drums (55gal) Most automotive suppliers add dye so it looks chemically and hard to make but essentially its as simple as.
