The main reason that you can’t swim in Maya Bay is because, with the amount of visitors and all the sun screens on them kills the corals! As for the monkeys, they come down the hill in the afternoon till evening, you were too early for them critters.

I was there last year. This place is amazing! You can see how clear the water is at 48:19 the boat behind looks like they're floating.

Wow, Koh Phi Phi and Maya Bay have changed, and not for the better. I was there 2008-2009-2012-2014. Changed alot. But i am still going back oct 2024 😀

So pissed to see Captain cross buoy line (or however it's called). As a Thai, he must be the first to protect his motherland over a little moments of enjoyment that could destroy years of hard work by our marine experts. I remember reading Dr. Thon's post, a marine and environmental activist, about the first group of coral and blacktip sharks after closing the beach. The fact that Maya receives thousands of tourists every day with hundreds of boats anchoring there, and marine life manages to grow back at a rapid rate, doubling its size in less than 2 years. This is unbelievable. For anyone who plans to visit Maya or any islands in the country, please report such an irresponsible captain.

Ever since they closed Maya Bay down for a few years when they re-opened it, peoples are only allowed to go up to their ankles in the water. Except people can go swimming when they are on the other side of the rope further out in the bay, they can snorkel there.
