  • It has been eight months since I uploaded a video of the "superduty" chuck box camp kitchen. I appreciate those who took the time to watch it, those who clicked like button and most especially, those who subscribed and left appreciation on my work. Today is the day I finished building a compact chuck box. It is never cheap to build one but I managed to secure the materials before the lockdown in Ontario. If you like what you see, click the like button, leave a comment and maybe subscribe. Thank you all for watching.
    P.S. The box weighs, when it is empty, 44 lbs. 🙂

    Congratulations on this new chuckbox. You put a lot of thought and planning into it but you could make it lighter by using other materials and by simplifying some of the more complex parts like that bottom shelf.

      @Keyser Soze Thank you. We all know there are already commercially available camping kitchen tables out there. They are lighter and cheaper but it is more satisfying to build something that is unique and perfect for my needs. Planning took more time than building it. Time spent and effort executed is all worth it because outcome that matters most.

    Nice, but I have you beat in the size dept. My micro chuck box is 10x12 inches. It's just enough to support a 1lb propane bottle with a backpacker's stove burner. Inside the box is a lighter & the bare minimum of cooking utensils; spices too. * Less is MORE, especially when ur a solo SUV camper. This pipsqueak box doubles as a night stand next to my bed in the car; multi-purpose is key!
    🏞️🌌 Happy Camping to all.🏕️💡

      @NoviceDIYerNoel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, I totally agree. The less you put in it, the lighter it gets. The outcome of the box also depends on your purpose. I don't do solo camping or backpacking so this is, at the moment, the best idea I came up with. Summer is coming so enjoy the fruit of your labor! Have fun camping buddy👍

    Really impressive design. Def not “novice”.
    The only input I’d add is regarding the butane stove. We’ve found that butane doesn’t work in the cold, specifically below 32 degrees, which may or may not be an issue depending on where and when you’re camping.
    Completely agree on the weight issue too. Our first generation build is great but way too heavy. Love your drawer concept with the lid. Totally stealing that for the next build. And for what it’s worth I added a thin sheet of stainless steel to the tops of the work surface. Makes for really easy clean up and can even be used to cut on, with cheap knives of course. Great job!!

    • @NoviceDIYerNoel
      @NoviceDIYerNoel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Matt Goves thank you and I appreciate your comment. I never knew butane stove are not suitable for cold weather. We always go camping in the summer. Totally agree on the weight issue of the first box. The lid on top of the drawer is good take bec it doesn't stay just a lid but also a work station. I would love to see your next generation chuck box. Cheers!

    Nice to see different ways of coming up with solutions. Hats off, your the one who's done the work and come up with something useful for you and for us to see. A wind screen asside, you seem to have most things covered in one box and seems robust. Efficiency of setup requirement is where things could be less involved. The whole leg height setp and bottom shelf serves a really good purpose but are too much of a faff to set up. The shelf could be permanently fixed in place, the leverage needed to keep the legs down when lifting the box might then be removed with the additional shelf weight, if not it could be achieved by attaching a bar handle or something of that nature to the shelf to put your foot in while pulling the chest up. One action same result. The top that become side shelves could be hinged rather rhan flipping it's ingenious but overcomplicated. Less is more as the saying goes.
    The inference of using the draw as a work surface seems an accident waiting to happen from a lever fulcrum stability perspective. Especially with the working height using the legs extended

    • @NoviceDIYerNoel
      @NoviceDIYerNoel  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your very profound comment regarding the build. Something different isn't always simple, it makes its complicated. I thought about the bottom shelf as permanent rather than a jigsaw puzzle. I would've used hinges for the side panels but again, something different from all other builds is just nice. Side sway problem was solved using cross brace at the back. Working space/drawer isn't for heavy chopping. Overall, thanks for your input. I appreciate it very much. Maybe I can do revisions soon.

    Genius build! Very impressive. Love that T Bar, swing out hinges on side panels, love the sliding drawer and the hook and clasp hardware. Anyone know the name of the hardware at the back of the top drawer that he hooks the cutting board to? There are a pair of them. One side screwed in to back of drawer, the other hook end on the cutting board edge.
    The T-bar with the allen wrench to turn the top rod so hooks face upward is sheer genius! I'm in awe.
    The sliding drawer with cutting board - I love it!!!
    The low profile hook clasp thingie (what is the name of this hardware?) that you use everywhere, is a game changer. Adore that piece of hardware. I will buy 50 of them to keep around. Very smart concept. So many uses at home, garage, shed, RV, car even!
    The one thing I don't like is that wood puzzle board you used as a lower shelf - overly complicated. Get rid of that. Get some aluminum legs that slide out from inside with some adjustable foot pads for uneven ground. One guy on TH-cam has done this.
    You are a magnificent builder! I love your Super Duty Chuck box too!

    • @NoviceDIYerNoel
      @NoviceDIYerNoel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @MJ Remy thank you for comment and honest opinion about this build. The hardware you asked about is called flush mount clips. I purchased these at Lee Valley, you can find then at homedepot, too. It's the same hardware used on the sides to mount the paper towel holder. I agree the puzzle at the bottom is annoying, adds to the total weight of the box. Good luck on your build.

    @gr8bkset-524 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    great job with some original solutions. I kept on watching wondering what other trick you're going to pull next. You've got everything except the kitchen sink (perhaps that green bag was your sink?). You've given me some ideas, but my challenge is box to weigh 25lbs so I can carry it when fully loaded. Perhaps the bar you stepped on to pull out the legs can be eliminated and just use your foot and the temporary bottom rack can be made with something lighter, like netting.

    • @NoviceDIYerNoel
      @NoviceDIYerNoel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @gr8bkset - thank you for your comment. Yes, the green folding thingy is the sink. Although this box is definitely lighter than my first build, still a great challenge is actual weight of the box. Could not agree more that a box should be easy to transport. I thought about using lighter material as bottom rack, for now it's what I got. Maybe a netting like you said would be a good material. The tool assembly I step on to simultaneously pull the legs out is a must. You'll see the problem it creates when I didn't have that tool yet. When it's fully loaded, you can imagine the downward force it puts on each side of the box. It is possible to pull all four legs out at the same time if there is a person on each side lifting the box (on three... 1,2,3 lift!). The problem exists when you're alone. Sending you the link below. th-cam.com/video/v9xeSUswDsg/w-d-xo.html

    • @gr8bkset-524
      @gr8bkset-524 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NoviceDIYerNoel The box I'm planning will be small and simple, so hopefully will be lighter. A few ideas I have to reduce weight is to build a frame for the box, then install hinges so the sides fold out to form flat working areas. Also I may make the legs out of 2 inch PVC pipes and use netting when structural support is not required.

    This is not something that was easy to build. It looks nice and if you are happy with it and it works for you, that is great. I do have a couple of observations. The box is quite tall to make it a useable height at about your waist. The process of setting it up, extending the legs looks a bit awkward. The extra piece of wood you used as a drawer cover and fascia could be better served as a wind block for the stove provided you add two hinged (aluminum) wings to skirt it or…….. the utensil rack popping up from the back could have been a wind block with hinged wings to skirt the stove. The pull-out drawer with the cover looks like it could cause the entire box to tip and fall forward if it were used as a food preparation board. The fold out wings were unnecessarily complicated and could have been hinged and made to fold down the side and simply propped up. All the camping equipment was really oversized…… It was well made, but not designed to use.

    • @NoviceDIYerNoel
      @NoviceDIYerNoel  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Roger I take your opinion in a good way, no hard feelings. There are a lot of things in this build that are unnecessary, moreover, things that made the build complicated to many. In my defense, the height is about standard countertop high. I have a folding aluminum wind blocker which was not shown on the video because I didn't have it at the time the video was made. The cover/fascia as an extra working space can used for light kitchen chopping work although the slides are at 100lbs capacity. Depends on how you use it, I guess. I get your idea of building it the way others build theirs, that is, more simple and straightforward. I could've actually build one with half the time i spent building this one. Awkward telescoping legs I totally agree but maybe it's the first of its kind and not just a rectangular hollow box that you slide on top then use as the chuck box's base support. This design is not for everybody. This is only to show "other" possibilities and design for chuck boxes.
