In Norway you also need to have a Masters Degree (which takes 5 years) before you can even apply for a PhD. That means: graduate High School at 18/19, plus 5 years in a masters degree + 4 years for the PhD (2 years of research and 2 years of work for the company paying for the research). So 27 is the absolutely earliest you could start a job as a doctor. On the other hand, Freeman could have been taking his PhD through Black Mesa (or FFI, which is the Norwegian equivalent). In which case he'd have been working there for 4 years already.
Christmas '98 - yeah, that intro was definitely something we had never seen. Edit: okay, I'm impressed! First time playing and you crouch jumped the latter mine like a seasoned professional.
It looks really good for 1998 cause you're using the HD model and texture set that was released with the Blue Shift expansion, originally in 2001 on WON then 2005 on Steam as an update to the original. You can switch back to the 1998 spec graphics in the video options. The only major difference is higher polycount models on HD.
Jon, I highly suggest you watch Ross Scott's (Accursed Farm's) machinima called "Freeman's Mind". He gives Gordon Freeman thoughts throughout the entirety of Half-Life and he is now doing Half-Life 2. Very funny and well done.
im not sure if anyone else has said this but some other people made a new game called "black mesa" which is exactly the same as the original except the textures have been reworked and everything has been polished up, if you plan to make this a series i suggest you play that version for the best experience in my opinion
I had a surprising strong emotional response to being reminded this game is 22 years old. 1998 was a pretty good year and I remember playing this and those other games you mentioned in my first year at university. There is also no way this is the original version of Half Life. This is what Half Life looks like in my sepia tinted memories, in reality actual original 1998 Half Life looks like complete crap. This is some sort of updated version that looks more like original Half Life 2.
I remember purchasing this game in 1998, my Pentium 133MHZ took sometimes minutes to load each area and I had no sound card, so most of the time was guessing what I needed to do. (Going up to press the button took awhile). Still, it's a really fun game I revisit from time to time.
Also if you liked this but wanted to try something a little more modernized try looking up "Black Mesa" on steam. It's a fanmade remake of half-life 1 but it's gotten some acknowledgement from the original creators and is a free download on Steam so doesn't require any modding or anything.

Wait till you load up The orange box with half life 2 and the connected games on it. You will truly appreciate the universe. Your video tonight has brought home the fact that the half life series has the be the best in multigenre. A survival horror. With platforming. Physics based puzzling and great storytelling. Half Life Universe changed everything! What do we have today that even comes close? If half life alyx goes multi platform, not just VR then just take my money! I have the orange box for my PS3. I really feel firing it up later today. Thanks Jon for doing this.

In which case he'd have been working there for 4 years already.
We cant have him go to hl2 without you know, finishing *all of thr first game and expansions* first
Can we maybe expect some Subnautica in the near future?
"okay shoot everyone....okay not you....maybe you" good lord man.
Christmas '98 - yeah, that intro was definitely something we had never seen.
Edit: okay, I'm impressed! First time playing and you crouch jumped the latter mine like a seasoned professional.

You could say you wanted orange, but it gave you lemon-lime
It looks really good for 1998 cause you're using the HD model and texture set that was released with the Blue Shift expansion, originally in 2001 on WON then 2005 on Steam as an update to the original. You can switch back to the 1998 spec graphics in the video options. The only major difference is higher polycount models on HD.
It never gets old watching people play through Half-Life for the first time! So glad you decided to do this Let’s Play John
What I would give for a Half Life 2 complete series...
24:50 Look Gordon, ropes! We can use them to help with pits!
Huh. Did not expect this. Guess he wasn't kidding about this being a dry month or two
PLEASE MAKE THIS A SERIES! And PLEASE PLAY ALL THE WAY THROUGH SYSTEM SHOCK 2!!!
Jon, I highly suggest you watch Ross Scott's (Accursed Farm's) machinima called "Freeman's Mind". He gives Gordon Freeman thoughts throughout the entirety of Half-Life and he is now doing Half-Life 2. Very funny and well done.
FINALLYYY!!!!! The game I've been waiting for you to play for years..
"Has my skull not popped out, for once? No! It hasn't!"
Did I hear "I've never played Half-Life," I played it and it came out 6 years before I was born.
God, you're young...
im not sure if anyone else has said this but some other people made a new game called "black mesa" which is exactly the same as the original except the textures have been reworked and everything has been polished up, if you plan to make this a series i suggest you play that version for the best experience in my opinion
As soon as this began I was counting the seconds until Jon got eaten by the ceiling venus flytrap
Jon: *talks about some retro detail which was once cool but now is not*
Game: 'Here's a thing! It's going critical!'
Jon: Wait, what?
Me: *satisfied smile of enjoyment*
I like how he doesn't use the sprinting, and crouch jumping.
I really enjoyed that! I played the first half life on ps2 a good 16yrs ago. The port was quite grainy and pixelated. But still enjoyably playable.
I can't wait for you to play Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines and all it's bugs
I want to see him do a Malkavian play-through and get into an argument with a stop sign.
Go to the options and turn off autoaim. Also, the last weapon used key (Q) is extremely useful. Please use it
YES! Excellent pick, must become series
24:39 Look Gordon! We can use these ropes to ge-HELP ME GORDON!!
This is really weird seeing as someone whose tried speedrunning this game since I've almost forgotten what it was like to experience it for the first time and exploring stuff
Jon, I hate you for telling me how old this is. like, a LOT.
15:24 - 15:31: Actual footage of Jon just wacking it
Heart of Darkness also came out in 1998. Worth taking a look at, i you can get it to run properly. ..or even find it for that matter.
Please for the love of God, do a series!
Can't believe Jon has never played Half-Life I was obsessed as a young lad. Looking forward to this series, hope he continues with the expansions.
My head cannon is that the phd was knocked down in revenge for the destroyed lunch.
John.
You're the best man. Thank you for once again quelling my rage about life
I didn't make it too far into this game but my most distinct memory was climbing ladders super fast and accidentally flinging myself off of them to my death...
You should also give Black Mesa a looksie, the fanmade-remake-turned-full-blown-game that uses the new engine, to see the improvements now that you saw the original.
I always feel old. This makes me full of nostalgia and reflection and joy!
Jon must finish this, the space baby is his spirit animal.
