#3 No wheat = Defeat. My rule for all my Catan games. Good to know you're doing well! Best wishes to you and your family. Keep it up! I hope the Catan World Championship hire you as their commentator. That will definitely increase the number of viewers at home 😉 You're the best!
Wow! First video of yours I've ever seen, but I can already tell you are an extremely chill person. The way you rolled with the purple player targeting you was inspiring, I can tell I'll be a long time sub. When you said it may be time for a second or third beer I laughed. Love the vid, gonna go watch some more. Keep it up
Please keep making vids! Can't get enough of them. My favorite is Rule #1, Ore Wins. Since I've started watching, it's won me so many games; as the rule implies.
I like rule #52, “block resources you produce.” It’s a great little strategy that I don’t think many people think about. And, counterintuitively, newbies will even block the resources they need because they are thinking about stealing it, but that is a terrible approach. Learned that from one of your videos. :) Thank you for posting!
Good to see you back, it has been a while;) #1- ore wins really changed my approached to the early game and, as this is a game of exponential scaling, increased my win rate
OMG a new video * - * I discovered this channel just 2 weeks ago, because a friend of mine just bought the game. I watched a l l the videos and they are great! :D Helped me winning on tuesday both games :) I'm gonna watch this very carefully after lunch ;)
@@NeonateGaming Basically I thaught them that: no wheat means Defeat :D One of my friends had 5 settlements and Long Road, I just had 2 settlments and a city. But he had not ore and had just one wheat (on a 8). So I basically blocked that 8 most of the game and won just in time!
@@NeonateGaming You are welcome ! I've watched all your videos easily 2 or 3 times each ! Too bad i didn't make it in time for your giveaway, but i've learnt my lesson and i will hit that notification bell ;) Take care ! A subscriber from Greece.
first of all, i'm so glad you are making videos again. THANK YOU! When i was first learning Catan last year, your videos really helped my game. Rule #3 for sure! It's catchy and very true. Wheat makes the world go round.
I'm new to the game. Been playing Texas hold'em for a while, but found this game and love the strategy involved. Thanks for helping me better understand the game. #3 I guess is the best, but all the rules you have shared have helped my game. Cheers!
#3 No Wheat = Defeat Also, Catan Universe received so many complaints about not seeing the board when trading, they made a toggle so you can switch from seeing the board to seeing the trade by moving your mouse onto and off of the trading board. To activate, click the USB-plug-in-looking button in the top right of the trade board so that it appears to be at an angle. Then, when you move your mouse off of the trading board, it will drop down low and become transparent. Hope this helps! Love your videos and yes, they have helped me beat all my friends at home.
#1 Ore rules and wins! Best rule of all!! I have improved because of your videos and strategies and now I tend to win a lot when playing with friends! Ha ha
#25 Don't make yourself a target. I feel like in this game, purple must have known who you were, and how dangerous of a player you are. It's the only explanation for robbing you at the start of the game.
Hey! Glad you’re back! Love your vids. My favorite rule is #13. A free road during placement can be a game changer, especially when someone ignores rule #28 and starts confrontation. Haha
Sorry, was commenting as I watched. Just saw your announcement at the end. Favorite Rule: #21 Get to a port. The difference between trading 3:1 as opposed to 4:1 is enormous. And being able to do it early on can allow you the ability to make up ground quickly if other players have gotten more advantageous initial settlements.
Regarding the story about the guy who won that event, one of my favorite catechisms is: Act like you've been there. Basically, treat every situation as if it's what you were expecting. Treat every situation as if it is your normal every day thing. Be humble in victory, and gracious in defeat.
Rule #60 - Don't be a jerk I played Catan with my friends for the first time a bit ago and got destroyed. I have since watched all of your videos and now I feel like I can take on anyone and have a chance to win, all thanks to you and your informative Catan videos!! Thanks for all the tips! Look forward to watching your next video! I don't actually own Catan, but if I win the giveaway I'll have to buy Catan!
Yellow was doomed when they inexplicably placed their 2nd settlement on the 4-9-11 (lumber-ore-ore) instead of securing the 3 resources they needed by taking the 3-4-8 (brick-ore-wool) and building toward the lumber port. That moved guaranteed that purple, who had only grain & lumber, would get the 3-4-8 instead, since red would have to take the 5-6-11 (lumber-grain-ore) after their strange 1st settlement on the 5-8-10 (brick-wool-wool). That 3-4-8 intersection should never have made it back around to purple. Yellow's move all but handed the game to either purple or red right from the outset. And red passed the advantage on to purple by allowing the 3-4-8 to get back to purple. At BEST, purple should only have had the 3-10-11 (brick-wool-ore) as an option. The only explanation I can think of why purple went after you instead of red is that they recognized the "neonate" ID. Maybe play under a new ID and blur it out on subsequent videos? Then the game experience you share with all of us won't be one that is skewed against you like it was here.
Rule #28 Avoid Confrontations. I think about this rule every time I make placements with my friends, and I think it ties in well with what was discussed in todays video. P.S. Just want to say that it's awesome to see a new video of yours. I've watched your videos many times over, and I'm excited for more this year!
#1 ore wins for sure ehi neonate, i m so glad to see you posting again. I started playing catan this christmas and i binge watched all your videos in like 5 days. This was for sure the most unlucky game i've ever seen lol since you were talking about table image, i really struggle with that. I can't keep my cool when someone does a bad move that damages both me and themselves, i tilt and start protesting, only obtaining to get even more focused soon after. I really need some tips for that, because it's so hard to control myself and just shut up! I admire you for keeping your cool with that dirty purple guy who focused you the whole match while you were at 2 points with nothing in hand, just from watching i was getting frustrated lol i just play with my family and sometimes online, and i'm willing to involve some of my friends in catan as well in the future, but i can't do it if it turns out to be just a bad experience for everybody whenever i tilt
Thanks! Controlling my temper is something I'm working on as well, both in Catan and in life! Maybe in a future video I'll talk about my most epic tilt in Catan...
All 61 of your rules in your description are spot-on. However, I like to take the unorthodox route and see if I can pull of a win by doing some sort of challenge. For example, winning without building a city, doing the 8-point play (see most viewed Catan video on my channel), winning without building on Brick or Wood (Lumber), and winning without building on 6's or 8's! Those are all in Basic Catan, but most of my challenges are in Cities & Knights. Also I would love to play in tournaments sometime, thanks for sharing your experience!
Thanks! I love your idea of "challenges" or "achievements". How about: "Rockefeller" - can you get/hold all 19 of a single resource (e.g. using Monopoly). "Pacifist" - can you win without stealing from anyone (blocking yourself if necessary). "So Accommodating" - can you win while accepting every trade you are offered. Good luck!
Neonate Gaming Those are from the list of in-game achievements right? Cuz when I thought of winning without building any cities, I discovered that was an achievement in the game. I will definitely be trying those challenges though. Although accepting every trade you are offered could be dangerous if the other players catch on and force you into ridiculous trades haha.
What's up Neonate, super glad to see you back... Also pretty stoked to hear you're gonna be posting more vids this year... Hopefully the games go better than this one... I mean I don't see how they could possibly go worse, so kudos to you for posting your worst ever game... Was still good to hear some tournament insights and what might work best in terms of how to present yourself... Favorite rule, #52- Block Resources You Produce.
#1, as Ore is just too strong in the late game. Honourable mentions to always knowing your win condition and knights>road as you control the robber. Glad to see you’re back making videos
17:11 "Ok, so the robber's put on me. I'm surprised I wasn't stolen from." - Player who has 2 points, built nothing all game and has 1 ressource card. Just the Catan games you love.
Rule # 0.5 - The fastest way to get really, REALLY good at Catan: watch Neonate's videos. Thank you for taking the time to post all of these videos. If you like Risk (as me) try Game of Thrones The Boardgame. I love it. Just 2 problems: quite long (4 hours or even more) and 6 players, no 7 no 5, just 6 (7 is the max and in 5 or less is unbalanced). So I've played it like... five times in my life? lol But it's great! If you have a group of friends who really enjoy this kind of game so you can play it often.
Rule #13 is my personal favourite. Helps avoid getting stuck right at the beginning, which alas happened to you in this video, although arguably wasn't your fault! Not to be too critical, but I probably would have chosen a different first placement. There were no good sheep-wheat junctions, so your dev card/city game was always going to be hard. Lots of places to get brick-sheep, incl. edge spots, so maybe the 5-6-11? One of those boards where picking the best ore gives you problems down the line...
I feel like taking the 6-9-2 at the start would have been better, as there are plenty of places you could get wood + wheat with your 2nd placement, or even taken the 8-10 wood + wheat as your 2nd (with the ore port).
Hey Neonate, really enjoying your content. I was wondering if you'd be interested in commentating a (rookie)'s game, where you can maybe discuss the mistakes that (rookie) players are making and where they could do better/what they should be doing? Thanks, lol, yeah, I wanted to play Catan too!
On Catan Universe, can you set up a private game to play with 3 friends, or are there only public games where you play whoever happens to be up next?
I think you can, but I haven't done so myself...
Okay, thanks for taking the time to respond. I'm going to check it out.
Rule #63 When it looks hopeless, get another beer. (probably the most practical rule of 'em all)
Totally, lol
#14 same numbers= feast or famine, my number one rule
So much famine in this game :-(
Rule #3
Love your vids
Thank you!!
#1 ore wins , has won me many games :)
Thanks, me too!

Great vids
Should do cities and knights
Thanks! I need to learn it myself!
@@NeonateGaming your vids are great
I cant find really any vids on cities and knights strategy at all and I find it hard reading strategy.
I just downloaded catan universe yesterday and it's hard to keep track of what is taking place around the board.
I get booted alot for taking too long as well lol
Is it me or latency in the game......?
Rule #5 seems to be an after thought for some, but I’m always looking to be within reach of a 3:1 port... after I’ve checked Rule #1 and Rule #3 :P
I agree with you completely - you need a port to win.
The first person I selected passed on the prize. I reselected randomly and you've won! Please email me at neonategaming@gmail.com and let's coordinate details!
Awesome! I’ve sent you an email 😊 Thanks!
#7 great videos! Keep it up!
Good one, thanks!
#23 gotta be my favorite.
I only play Catan with my roommates and those new Table Image Rules don't apply at all for us :D
Agreed, there could be a whole book on table talk. Yeah, I would trash talk my roommates too.
I’ve got to go with the good old ore wins rule #1
I don't blame you, it's a good one!
Long time no see lol this game is awesome BTW
Tame Naz Thanks and BTW I agree!
@@NeonateGaming Yeah, so I played this game with my friends and like there used to be the one and only winner and it was always this one guy. So I watched your videos and I kept playing the Catan Universe and I got better, now I'm the only winner
That's awesome, congrats lol!
#14!~ Feast or Famine!
Yep, I was starving this game!
#1. Ore Wins
Agreed, thanks!
