  • Looks Like A Jet, Flies Like A GA Airplane…
    While at Sun ‘n Fun 2016, ANN News Editor, Tom Patton, saw a light-airplane that looked like a stylized F-15. The airplane is called the PJ-II “Dreamer”. To get the details, Tom talked with Len Bechtold, who designed the engine for the aircraft, as well as the technical director of design, Ben Kolotilin.
    The Design of this fascinating airplane originated in Russia and has now been brought to the United States with the hopes of placing it into production. Kolotilin explains that the intent was to produce a stylized fighter-like airplane with flying characteristics that any general aviation pilot could deal with. He describes the performance as having a high-end speed of about 200 knots with a stall speed in the range of 60 knots.
    Len Bechtold got involved in the project to provide the powerplant. The twin ducted fan aircraft is powered by an LS6 modified Corvette engine that is actually mounted inside the fuselage and drives the two ducted fans through a transmission. He explains the gear ratio for the fans allows the 5000 RPM engine to drive the fans at about 6000 RPM.
    The video goes into much more detail, and provides some interesting in-flight shots of this unusual airplane in action. By the end of this video you will almost certainly be saying “I want that!”.

    The thing is...After flying GA for ~ 20 years one thing that interests pilots across all spectrums is the lure of fighter aircraft design. Lets face it, crawling through the clouds in a C172 is not something that will get pilots off the couch after couple hundred hours for the express purpose of a 'fun flight.' Planes like the SF-1 and this baby here could bring the 'FUN' back to GA. Flying for fun, the reason you got your license!Piper, cessna and beechcraft need to wake up - these planes cost a fraction of the big manufactuers and scream fun!

    I know the LS6 engine and it won't last long spinning at 5,000 rpm! I hope that's full throttle take off engine speed and you can cut back 50% throttle for cruising because at 5,000 rpm you're going to have to rebuild the motor after 100 hours...and it doesn't look easy to get to. Besides that what a cool one off gearbox with 2 angled driveshafts running the fans! Really cool shit right there!

    • @Chanesaw328
      @Chanesaw328 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kevin Tucker He said the fans are moving 6000 rpm. Not the engine. He probably has that transmission geared to make that speed with the engine at a comfortable throttle level.

      I would use the 32v 5.0 Ford like in my 2014 Mustang. It will run all day long at 5-6,000 rpm and not even breathe hard. With the Roush supercharger it puts out 625 HP.... LS engines are known to be lazy, and not like higher RPMs...

    • @Picasofly
      @Picasofly 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot less load on the engine than a vett puts on it.

    • @Justwantahover
      @Justwantahover 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Put two TJ-100's in it. Or TS 100's driving the impellers. These UL gas turbine engines are like less than a quarter the price of a P&W. It would cost like 100 grand for two TJ-100s. Not too much money.

    • @EatPezzzz
      @EatPezzzz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tazaxx21 32v Ford engine is 9" wider, 6" taller, and 60lbs heavier than an LS6. I guess you've never built an airplane.
      Also, airplane builders aren't looking for highest hp, they're looking for dependability. The more you stress the engine, the less dependable it becomes.

      I have this same idea. I want to use these ducted fan types to power different airframe designs that look like other fighter jet types. This Mig 29 / F-15 type looks awesome but I also think an A-10, F-16 (single fan) and F-14 would be awesome for kits. Though I think there needs to a better design on power plant and fan blades. Gotta get those RPMs higher.
