    Dracula's Daughter has a lot in common with the Son of Kong. Both were rushed out to cash in on the popularity of the original. And both bring back a supporting character from the original (Denham and Van Helsing) who is in serious legal trouble due to his actions in the previous film. And both Kong's son snd Drac's daughter are portrayed more sympathetically than their dad.

    It's interesting to realize that the rights to Stoker's work still had to be bought back then. Nowadays Dracula is in the public domain, so anybody can freely use him. It's very convenient to have a character that's instantly recognizable and that you don't have to pay for.

    To be honest the often mentioned notion that Dracula's Daughter features a clear homosexual/lesbian aspect is rather flimsy, questionable and dubious at best. Even though it is clear that the film depicts the Countess preying upon a female to satisfy her vampiric cravings for blood there is very little to suggest any kind of sexual attraction much less "romantic" desire where as by contrast the suggested romantic tension between the Countess and the male lead is overt even if left ultimately unfulfilled.

    Queer vampires isn't really a new concept when it originally was from the vampire book Carmilla. Which technically is older than Dracula.

    The Countess didn't hunt female victims exclusively, the gentleman she met on the street was killed. And yes, I disagree about Ms.Holden's performance not being compelling. Her otherworldly aloofness and the way she seems to struggle at restraining her savage hunger is mesmerizing. I've loved this movie ever since the first time I saw it, years ago.❤

  • @keshiaanders6452

    This is the closest thing to a film adaptation of "Carmilla."
    Well, that & "Ruby Gillman" (though it only had a few elements of the book & the villain's theme is to manipulate the lead heroine under a false identity).

  • @LaDracul
    @LaDracul ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I thought we were getting one where her sexuality was more explicit but it's really a much different story about kidnappers who don't realize the girl they kidnapped is a vampire. We're gonna be wading through these elseworlds for a while before Universal gets a clue, so buckle up.
    Also, don't say things you can't take back. You'll see what I mean...😏

    Your analysis is mistaken. In the argument Marya is a vampire going for blood, not a lesbian going for sex. Allegorically, it could be the later, but then, it wouldn't be flattering, since she wants to get rid of it, she abuses women, it is bad for her and fatal for other women. So it would be anti-LGBT propaganda in the allegory. You have to also remember that her first victim is male (something Bela didn't have as Dracula), and her final goal was a male consort (in betrayal of her male servant, who wanted it too). All of this forgetting that in the unapproved scripts her victims were male.
    Most people miss a lot when reading allegories and subtext. They snip the bit they feel is proof of what they want and forget about the context.

    Despite the polarizing nature of the film, I always felt that Dracula's Daughter should be added as one of the main Universal Horror Monsters, along the likes of Frankenstein, Dracula, the Mummy, the Creature, etc. Not only is Dracula's Daughter an underappreciated movie, it would give the classic horror monster line up more female representation than just the Bride of Frankenstein. It would also give the lineup more possible LGBTQ representation as well.

    I honestly prefer this over Dracula. As legendary and import as Dracula is, it's a rather sloppy film in and of itself. As many have said, the second half becomes very dry and stagnant. Dracula's Daughter is more moody and provocative with more interesting characters and dynamics. The messy subtext just makes it all the more compelling, imo. So I disagree with the Doc's take here.
