This is a "conversion" so the cost of entry is ALWAYS going to be higher than buying something off the manufacturer's dealer lot. Why do people do V8 Hemi swaps at $40k+ a pop? Is there not a cheaper vehicle to drive than a Ferrari? Of course there is. People build what they want and it doesnt mean that one is right and the other wrong. People regularly bring vehicles to our shop with $20k in mods. Does that mean lift kits and tires and wheels, gears, bumpers etc are cost effective? We get that its expensive. We get that its not for everybody. If its not your brand of vodka, nobody is forcing anything on anyone. But, keep it in perspective compared to other professional conversions out there. At least ours has a long list of benefits other than raw power.

In addition, they tow more than a Tacoma, they get much better fuel milage like 40mpg, and they are made of steel unlike the cheap composite bed on the Tacoma. One more thing, they are already diesel.

    • @felixrodriguez5847
      @felixrodriguez5847 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ShartingFish True but what that truly says is the poor quality of the steel and cheap paint they use to protect the metal. For instance, there’s trucks from the 1970s that still have there Original bed but back then quality craftsmanship was over mass producing trucks that truly are not meant to last over 10 years. For instance, I own a Tundra that has a steel bed and have never had rust problems with it or any of the ones I’ve owned. Why is that, Toyota doesn’t completely own the market on their full size trucks like they do on their mid size trucks so they can’t just slap on a reliable power train on a plastic porcelain body. I like Toyota, but the quality of their vehicles is very poor here in the US compared to what they build in other countries.

    • @shartingfish5761
      @shartingfish5761 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Felix Rodriguez I don't really have the industry knowledge to judge that, nor the climate details, i just assume that places that they use salt on the roads like here where i am in the rust belt that regardless they crack in half.. here things don't really survive no matter what they are after 10 years.. that's about the limit on body integrity no matter who makes it. I am curious how the aluminum body f150 will fair, but tundra, tacoma, ram, sierra, silverado they all rust to pieces here in time.. though dodge is probably the worst as most after 10 years you can use as mulch.

      The start-stop system is terrible for DPF, as it requires relatively high temps.

The rest of the world gets it. The only way to achieve the torque and MPG's for a truck is with a diesel. Toyota does what it can with the 3.5 six but its a horrible compromised torqued starved POS. This is the way it was meant to be. They already got these with DEF overseas. Its not that hard for Toyota if they wanted to bring it in. Just to much demand for the current taco so they don't care. People buy crap they will gladly make it lol.

    '17 Canyon diesel here. Got a good deal and paid 36.5K for it plus tax, while he paid 32K for the conversion. Compared to this guy, I nearly got a free truck!
    All good natured kidding aside, would love to see Toyota bring their 3L D4D diesel to the US in the Tacoma. That would be cool as Hell. Torquey small turbo diesels in mid size trucks are efficient and super fun to drive. I do drive a fair amount of highway, but my tuned Canyon, which is a 4x4 crew cab long box, is averaging 27.5 MPG overall. It is common to see low to mid 30s on the highway, and upper 500 miles between fill ups.
    Baby diesels, especially when tuned (which is more to relieve them of engine killing heavy EGR use than to increase power) like this guy's Toyota was and my Canyon is, completely rock.

      Still not sure what I like more, the 3.0L or the new 2.8L, though both are well refined

      Ryan Schiebout matter of preference I personally prefer the Hilux. And to be fair, it’s because they’ve been so good to me personally

      Ryan Schiebout well yeah there is that. But I mean it is personal preference if I like the look of the Hilux compared to the Tacoma isn’t it?

    This engine is everywhere in the Philippines. From Hilux, hiace, prado. So fuel efficient and the power and torque is always there

    Toyota should offer this variant in the States.

    Now there's a Toyota that could get me back to driving a Tacoma again!
    But that's the way it'll go,..not enough buyer's for that Diesel , power, sound, and economy,..it's just a no-brainer for me,....
    Well done Ron!

    Its a pretty common engine here in south east asia, the 3.0L & 2.5L (1KD-FTV & 2KD-FTV) . U can find it on anything, from single cab, dual cab, 16 seater van, suv, big suv, minivan, and even on some modified boat. Its highly tuneable as well. I saw the tuned minivan one drag racing against lancer evo and won 😂

    if toyota did this.. tacos would be epic legends. shame its the basic model. and without that delay start or gear hunting. people with money can do interesting things.

    3.0 is the old diesel engine, Toyota is using the smaller 2.8 but slightly more powerful engine since 2016.

    Clean the EGR valve out with oven cleaner and isopropyl alcohol every 50,000 miles. Take it off, take the solonoid off the back and clean it well behind the valve. This will keep everything 100% running well. along with regular service of 5w30 c3 engine oil.

    If they offered a diesel engine when I went to my Tacoma in 2018 I have gone for the Diesel hands down!!
