I genuinely, solidly, greatly like this book. It should be absolute mandatory meaning to any man looking to make either himself or his way in the awfulness of the modern world. The sequels, "Becoming a Barbarian" and "A More Complete Beast" are on that list too. I'm really pleased to see Illacertus doing a segment on TWoM!
To take the edge off read Ecclesiastes 1:2, its all hevel/vanity. But yeah, he's not wrong and well all know he is strong points. Just dip into some Jordan Peterson and improve your self every day by facing the dragons. Good luck.
I don’t like that this discounts the pleasure of simple things like hiking or climbing or nature. I think it’s a bit silly personally. It dumbs down and oversimplifies things to seem edgy and intelligent I think
I'd say that's actually the opposite of Donnovan's view. The last chapters of A More Complete Beast encourage those kind of pleasures. I'd broadly agree that this series is not complex, but neither is it dumb. Rather, it is simple, direct, and to the point. It may come across as incredibly blunt, even offensive - but that's because Donnovan is trying to shake the male reader out of a stupor. "Harsh but true" messaging. The series is certainly intelligent, but not edgy. It's worth sticking with.
It's more nuanced than that. You have to consider the context of the book. It is just an excerpt and yet every man should ask himself "is chasing fun enough?" Or is there something more to my life, a mission, a overarching goal, a narrative of greatness developing through consistent deeds.
