Beautiful job on sharpening this pair of scissors, I don’t wanna know what you can do with knives. There’s what they call surgeon sharp, what they think is the sharpest, and then there is tradition Japanese kitchen knife sharp which can split a hair in half right through the middle… and when you get a knife to be that sharp, it’s no joke…
Most of the reason scissors are 'dull' I'd actually because they have come out of alignment. Mostly getting them to cut well again is a matter of readjusting thier bolt.
By out of alignment I assume you mean the scissors are loose which they would fold hair rather then cutting, but if you are saying the metal blades are out of alignment, that’s a whole different story, and it’s rare. When hairdressing scissors are loose, it will have a lot of play for barbers or hairdressers to push the “ thumb blade” further off, which would dull the tip very fast, once you tighten or “readjusting” the bolt or screw, yes it might not longer fold but will definitely push hair or even catching, so no good since the tip is the most used component of these scissors.

EXCELLENT !! One extra detail: some of the highest performing scissors are slightly concave on the inner passing surfaces to ensure the cutting edges pass in contact with each other. To prevent reduction of concavity on the inner surfaces, only make one very light pass on a super-fine stone and then strop what’s left of any “wire edge”. It will be so fine you won’t be able to see it.
Still is an art. Anyone can buy some machine that holds the blades at an angle and you just put in different stones and step it up grits and half the time they dont even work like they should. Now taking the time to learn to sharpen different steels and hardness of different tools is an art. Lawn mower blades, to axes, hatchets to scissors, and pocket knives all work on similiar principles but takes hands on time to really do it justice and get the best edge possible. This guy is really good.
Can you please make a video or two about techniques, equipment and troubleshooting on sharpening? It's something I just found out I'm interested in but can't really find anything online to teach me properly
That is actually the opposite of how it works. If it is dry it is rigid and easier to get a clean cut, but to be able to get a clean cut on wet paper it would need to be incredibly sharp.
Completely opposite. Try cutting wet tissue with an average pair of scissors and you'll find the tissue just folds between the blades and tears instead of being cut. You need a really sharp pair of scissors to do this.
Apparently you are wrong based on the other 3 people who have replied.. but I thought the same thing about the wet cloth being easier to cut. Either way he shouldn't have started the video with a dry cloth and ended the video with a wet cloth.
@jasoncastaneda1942 the shears used today cost 150$, if/when the shears dulled, all you had to do was take them back to the store you bought them from and they would take your dull shears and give you new shears! It is awesome! BTW they check to see if they are dull!
When you drag the blade over the stone, you were only leaving steel on the left (your right) side of the stone, so the stone was only grinding away material at the hinge. I can see the value on decreasing the clearance between the blades in this way, but I don't think you actually we're sharpening the blades during this step. Also, I don't agree with the polish step, on that padded wheel you'll make it shiny, but risk rounding the blade edges - a leather strop and polishing compound is definitely the way to go, there's a reason this technique hasn't gone away for hundreds of years.

Quick tip for those that don't have the time nor resources for all this nonsense: fold aluminum foil to make it a few layers thick then cut it several times. It gets them fairly sharp in about ten seconds. You're welcome.
btw if your scissors cannot be disassembled do NOT sharpen the inside face, it will just create a gap and was probably still perfectly flat anyway, you can get great results just by sharpening the outside bevels
So I read somewhere that to sharpen scissors, you simply take a class jar ( such as a mason jar) and using the scissors like you would if cutting paper, gently and slowly close the scissors on the lip of the open glass jar (imagine trying to cut the mouth of the jar with the scissors). It sounded so bat-shit crazy I just had to try it. So with the most worn pair in my shop I gave it a try and was quite impressed at the results!

The problem wasn’t that the scissors were dull, the problem is that they had too much slack in the bolt.
