For your first time casting, this was very good. Great job! If you keep pumping out content I think your channel has massive potential. It's obvious that the players are new to AOE since they missed some key upgrades and made some weird macro choices. But all in all, great games.
Thank you so much for this. I'm just trying AoE after a lot of Warcraft/Starcraft experience, and this game really illuminated what the pace of a competitive game could feel like. One format for video content that is popular for Starcraft and Dota games are sort of like abbreviated casts where portions of the entire game are stitched together to create shorter versions of the matches that catch the important developments. It can turn a 30 minute game into a 10-15 minute video which can be a lot more approachable for some audiences. I wouldn't replace what you're doing, but it may be a cool idea to consider. You could commentate for an entire video like normal, and then decide if you wanted to upload an edited version and/or the full game. This may be more meaningful to consider for games with more macro/economic focuses that may have more "downtime."
I reckon it was the blacksmith upgrades that won it for Striker in both games. His units were just that little bit more dangerous. +1 damage and +1 armour means each unit is 2hp more effective.
Great and informative casting, coming from a competitive sc2 background it's nice to hear some clean casting free of fluff and useless information. Looking to play aoe4 for the multiplayer and knowing some early builds or strategies is cool. One minor criticism or rather personal preference possibly, I would make your webcam smaller or remove it. RTS games require a fairly clear view of the game. Great cast.
The HRE seem, just from the looks of game so far, very "terran", except less ranged reliance because this is a totally different era. Very much "take position, reinforce it, move up from there" kinda play, you can go for a good chunk of what we might consider "medium" infantry units like shield+heal marines+marauders, or you can go up to heavier, highly defensive units like mech.
I felt like they both had a couple opportunities to finish off their opponent a bit sooner. FYI there are different movement speeds for knights, light cavalry, steppe lancers, and camels in AoE2.
Man I'm kinda sad that there aren't more pros uploading their gameplay of AOE4. I was expecting stuff like... TheViper and such uploading one or two videos! It's great to see that someone did cast and upload some pro player matches though!
I heard on your video you started commentating and casting yesterday. I would never have guessed. Your commentating is really good and helps me understand the flow of what's going on. I'm not at a level where I can understand the plays these players make and why, so hearing you present the game is great, even if I am really not overwhelmed at what AoE 4 is shaping up to be. What other games would you commentate?
Hey SuperHans, thanks for the thoughtful comment. I would consider commentating other RTS games, but I don't have an interest in much besides AoE4 at the moment to be completely honest. I used to play a lot of DoTA2 and could have commentated it probably 5 years ago, but the game has changed so much lately in ways I haven't kept up with - so I don't really understand it anymore and don't really want to. Over all, I was considering having this channel as an RTS channel, as it appears maybe there are some exciting games on the horizon like CoH3 and a game being developed by ex blizzard developers - gamedaily.biz/article/2060/frost-giant-studios-partners-with-dreamhaven-to-build-the-next-great-rts-game
@@storrn8579 I also love RTS and feel starved of any decent games recently. I always go back to classics like CoH and Supreme Commander. Considering the heavy cav to cav fight in the early game, I feel like NyanCatRacing should have gotten at least one Camel Archer. Since it debuffs enemy cav that are near it making them deal less damage. They're also great for sniping vills.
Hey David, I agree - it was a shame to not see more diversity in the unit selection. It felt like most players were playing a very one track mind game style - which I think is a result of only having such a small amount of time with the game to explore options/builds/approaches.
Hey mate, yeah the maps have a general rule set they follow - but there is randomization to the spawn. You will also get maps that are more constant with their spawn too - but in this beta it was only the semi random generation maps available :) Arabia is generally regarded as the main 'competitive' map that pro's play on in AoE, but there are lots of different maps and game modes too! AoE is quite diverse in that respect :)
As far as resources of AOE4 are concerned, the only resource amount I have a problem with is wood. Even gold & stone are reasonable. But as far as wood is concerned, no map other than Black forest has enough wood. And I'm not talking about the starting forests close to your base, but on the entire map. Other than the 3 forests per person, the rest are extremely small patches, that too sparse. They should have around 10 proper forest patches in a 1v1 map.
The scoreboard seems to have an issue. For soldiers, it highlights the most kills and least losses (ie, the good numbers), but for buildings, it highlights the most razes and the *most* losses.
You can say that these players were some of the best from the BETA, so it's not a stretch to call them pro - especially as they're definitely deemed professional in the other RTS games they play.
does anyone know how blue won the fight at 14:37 ? the rams were taking the TC arrows and red had a good number of pikeman so I don't understand how he lost to just cav
It seems like Nyan didn't use attack move, rather he targeted a unit, so the spearmen weren't hitting anything for a very long period of the fight. We spoke a little with NyanRacingCat after the game and he confirmed.
Nice work on the commentary man, enjoyed the matches. Just one criticism is that you suck in over your teeth a lot, in particular when a tense moment is occurring. It spikes the audio and is kind of annoying (just my personal opinion) but if you can mix it up with some "oh boy" or "a tense moment here" or what ever, it would be much smoother listening. Anyway, good luck with your future casts.
It's a bit sad that the eco management is such a minor deal in AOE4. After watching 5-6 different battles it seems like it only comes down to micro manage the army :(
really frustrating to see nyan establish a lot of map control with his spear + cav control early, and then let it slip through his hands by failing to throw up early walls or towers until it was far too late and far too porous Raiding is so powerful in AOE4, esp in this matchup, so having static defense really gives you an APM and unit control advantage over your opponent since it takes far fewer clicks for you to deal with their shit than for them to deal with yours.
Striker did an excellent job winning game 2 off of a more coherent build order. He understood both he and Nyan were going mass Feudal horseman, and he prioritized an earlier blacksmith and committed once he had his upgrades in. As a result of the upgrade investment, Nyan had at times superior numbers. Even with that, Striker was still able to build a numerical lead on the field through better splitting, kiting, and engagement. I don't know if it's a pathing AI issue or nyan was just right-clicking instead of a-moving, but there was a lot of really shit "circle around the formation" pathing from his horses. You can really see the power of Striker's upgrades in the 51:10 engagement, he cleans the fight with hardly 3 losses despite wiping nyan's entire army. An excellent game 2.
I think putting your camera over the camera modes in the top right would be best. its irrelevant to people watching; they can see the fog of war anyway.
why is everyone comparing this game to SC2? they are nothing alike my guys AoE has always been a more intensive and competitive style game while SC2 took its mechanics from the other blizzard title Warcraft 3 (which is more similar to aoe than sc2 but still not there) which are more of a casual style rts game, although the macro is great in those games there is not as much resource management as some of us would like

personal preference, not a valid criticism, you can barely see the webcam.
I'd say just remove the webcam, as it doesn't add anything to the commentary, IMHO
