  • New figures have revealed that the risk of older motorists being killed or seriously injured triples after the age of 75.
Data from the Department for Transport showed a sharp increase in the rate at which older car drivers were involved in serious accidents, compared with middle-aged motorists.

The main risk appears to me to be from the younger drivers. Us oldies drive safely.

All they need is a medical to make sure they are up to driving, which i think happens anyway.

But the risk of getting it from conditions like strokes and diabetes increases with age.

Whatever next. Afterv70 everyone has to renew their licences. I still think young drivers are worse. They are the dangerous drivers. Why is every young person against pensioners?

Older drivers cost more minor accidents

not every older person needs to take another driving test more like the boy speeders need to have more control over their own driving behaviour. or maybe we will all soon be driving around in controlled cars and thats how things will go.

a decline in reaction times ...? well dont forget when someone pulls out on a roundabout with nothing on the road then suddenly a BMW comes flying out of a blind corner at 60mph on a 30 mph road ...the reaction is not to blame .

Just cos they pass a test on a particular good day for them doesn't mean they are safe to drive on other days so passing a test doesn't mean they are safe drivers

I would make it compulsory to retake the test every 5 years, in line CSCS training for diggers dumpers and fork lifts.

There are two tests that are taken, the theory and practical. I think everyone should be mandated to retake the theory every 10-15 years and practical only if mandated by police or courts. Because we all know that the rules of the road can change and redoing the theory can ensure the driver is keeping updated on the evolving nature of road safety, this with no age limitations.

What about making foreign nationals that arrive here to take our test if they are living here for over say a year. The driving in area's with a high population of foreign nationals is an absolute disgrace.
