Yeah, I remember the good old days of going to the arcade and playing Donkey Kong in 2019.
I’m hoping this game does well enough that we get a sequel that builds off the OG Mario vs DK (And by extension DK 94’)
That’s what I was thinking.
It already has sold over 150k in Japan between physical and digital so it probably Is doing fine.
I'm thinking they could name it under the name "Puzzle Mario".

I’m really disappointed that they didn’t add a level editor like the sequels, I would love to see custom levels of this game. But I still think that this remake is pretty fun.

A couple years ago I got into EXTENSIVELY collecting and playing gameboy games. A sudden urge that was, probably inspired in a big part to your videos 😅

Being a big DK fan, I picked up the original Mario Vs DK game (as well as DK ‘94) and just fell in LOVE with it. I don’t know how many hours I blew on this game, but I was so impressed with it, and it was a lot of fun. My only grievance was with the fact the cut scenes were just still images…there’s all this dialogue and sounds and nothings moving, it irked me to no end. Just seemed odd it looked they spent so much time on everything else but just phoned the whole setup for the games story in.
Which is why when the new one was announced and I saw the trailer with ANIMATED scenes…I was just about beside myself with glee. Yea, I miss some of the dialogue, and that’s the thing most people complain about…the absence of the Italian gibberish. That and one of the scenes being changed entirely, the one of toad and Mario laughing a DK. But honestly I never liked that one anyways, because I can’t see the Toads or Mario acting that way.
Never mind the fact DK is still a gigantic ape with somewhat violent tendencies…I wouldn’t laugh at him, no sir.
Saying all that though I’m SO GLAD you covered this game, I’ve been binge watching videos on this one since its release…but one from you was the one I most wanted to see, and I got my wish.
I also agree the price tags on the game…isn’t really worth it. Don’t get me wrong I love it, but as you mentioned there’s really no additional content or anything to make you feel playing and finishing the game 100% is worth the bother. Even speaking as a ‘retro’ gamer, I’ve been spoiled by those little perks and additional content most newer games have these days…I got addicted 😂

Hey. First up, that's the biggest super thanks I've ever got so much thanks for that.
And yeah, DK94 / Mario vs DK are some of my favourite games. I probably should've talked about he cutscenes more but yeah I didn't really mind the removal of Mario laughing at DK cos it did seem out of character. The actual animated cutscenes for the most part are great outside of Mario barely talking.

I think it’s pretty interesting that this remake and presumably TTYD will be reusing Charles Martinet’s Mario voice instead of using Kevin, I wonder if future remakes will do the same?
It’s nice to see someone who doesn’t let nostalgia cloud their judgement and is actually able to give a fair comparison
I wish the remake included the 12 E-reader levels though, barely anyone ever had a chance to play them legitimately in the original game, the only way to play them is with a modified save file that you can find on TCRF. However, they would HAVE to bring back Fall Damage for them I'm pretty sure, because the very first E-reader stage requires fall damage and without it the entire level breaks. The whole concept of it is starting at the top and slowly making your way down to the bottom where both the key and door are located, but without fall damage you can just fall to the very bottom, grab the key, and be done in like 3 seconds. Not sure about the other E-reader stages though.
Agreed. None of those levels are particularly great but it would've been new content for most people regardless.
Glad someone mentioned this. Would’ve been a cool opportunity to add some lost content. I suppose the new levels make up for that, but it still would’ve been nice.
To be honest, I’d be cool having new DLC for DK’s Tower from 94.

You gotta admit, that gigantic Mecha of DK's looks grand I'm watching this with not just the Min Marios but *also* the Mini Donkey Kongs as well!
I like that, despite looking visually like a new Super Mario Bros game, this game definitely at least visually looks like it controls like a donkey Kong game. Like the original donkey kong. Which is very cool
Something you forgot to mention is that some of the music from the originally was actually replaced with new tracks altogether. They're specifically the songs for the Fire Mountain and Twilight City worlds, and all of the boss themes except the one for the final boss of the plus worlds.
He also forgot to mention that the remake is less mean spirited than the original.
In the original, after the first final boss the Toads push DK off the building, but in the remake he falls off on his own
In the original, Mario, the Minis, and the Toads laugh at DK when his bag is empty, making him kidnap the Toads, in the remake he just kidnaps the Toads for no reason
In the original after the true final boss, DK cries after being beaten, while in the remake he just glares angrily at Mario
You'd think that after the movie Nintendo would be open to letting Mario games have more personality, but they actively removed it from this remake.
Which is more important in life: pie factories or icicles?
The most exciting thing about this remake, is the fact that they made the tools to make a new game.
Who knows when we're gonna get it, but those new stages look promising, and seeing the sheer output of games they had on the "touch" era, I'm hoping they can get a similar pace from here on out now that they have a new foundation.
I think my only real issue is the fact that you have to unlock Time Trial mode by beating the game. As far as this remake goes, it's the mode that highlights the game's strengths the most. Other than that, if they just kept scores and kept the more forgiving fall damage to the casual mode, the game is a perfectly fine version of Mario vs. Donkey Kong.
The game is probably going to be sold for around $40-$35 used, so I'd recommend it for that much. The game might be short, but like the original, it's very replayable.
This video pretty much addressed all my concerns and questions about the game. Will be waiting for a sale before picking this up

But the most important change made in this remake remains: They completely removed the e-Reader levels that were present in the Japanese version of the original, which is just baffling to me. They could've even implemented a callback to the original by necessitating the use of a Mario or Donkey Kong amiibo to unlock them.
Better yet: Create a brand new Mini-Mario amiibo that works as a wind up toy, where you can twist the key in its back to have it move its arms or something...

I always thought something was off looking about the original. You described it well.
This game seems decent but honestly the biggest disappointment is that there’s no level editor. Nintendo planned to add a level editor on the original gba version but didn’t due to hardware constraints but there’s no excuse really for not including it here. And the ability to share levels would add so much replayability to the game. Quite tragic honestly

I wouldn't say no to a remake of March of the Minis, or a revival of the Mario vs. DK series. The number of characters you could include and ideas they could use are limitless. Imagine if DK Jr and Stanley the Bugman came back, or Pauline was playable. A great feature would be a level creator that lets anyone make a stage.

Sure, but sometimes you just want that original product in a prettier form thanks to new and improved hardware, without the ever popular "accessibility" features and removal of cool touches that really didn't have any reason to disappear.
It's like that FFVII remake thingamajig, the original is still there, but I'm sure fans of it would have liked to see it in HD as opposed to essentially getting some new game with the same title.

And even when there is a 1:1 remake like Crash and Spyro got, people find reasons to complain.
That fall damage change is probably the biggest dealbreaker to me.
This style of game is all about safely navigating. So many of the stages in the original MvDK or even the DK1994 source of the game play have huge difficulty aspects focused on "Dont fall!"
Tbh that's what I thought but when I really looked Mario vs DK, there really aren't actually many levels which is built around it as I thought. Less than 5 really. Which is why I ended up not getting hung up on it so much.
I agree with DK94 though, since a lot of the puzzles are built around building your own platforms.

i always thought the stock sound effects were so funny in the original, i was a bit upset they removed them. Loved the music in the original too, shame fire mountain and twilight city got treated the way they did in the remake, the vibes just aren't there imo. Still loved the remake, just hope they update it with an expert mode or something to make it more of a challenge, didn't even feel like going through the time attacks cause it would just be replaying the same easy levels again.

As I knew how much you liked the original, I was looking forward to this review! It's a very fair one where you even shown how the game falls a bit short. Still, I'm glad you liked it in spite of the price tag.
thats a good point about the score system and enemies. i only played the remake and i was often confused about some of the seemingly random and pointless enemy placements
It's cool how Martinet was in this remake. I guess he'll be in subsequent Mario remakes, like Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon and Paper Mario TTYD. Not gonna lie, it would feel very uncanny to hear a new voice in these old games lol.
swag video fam! mario vs donkey kong was the first game i ever played, and it's still up there as one of my favorite games of all time. i bought the remake and was completely caught off guard by the new levels. one thing that really disappointed me about the game was the lack of a maker mode, since that was a staple and big selling point of the sequels i was hoping they would add it to the remake. it would have been sick to mess around with the new mechanics and stuff they added.
hopefully it sells well enough to where nintendo might do more with the series. i know my nostalgic ass would be an easy market for new mvdk games looool
As a child, I didn't get hooked on the DS games with stylus and mini-Marios. M vs DK on GBA was a great discovery, with heavier, less aerial physics than classic Mario and puzzle levels with very little scrolling. It made me rediscover and appreciate the original arcade game, so uncluttered and simple in concept.
The consecration came with the GB opus, with the arcade touch more preserved, with the risk-reward/scoring/timer aspect and the more demanding level design enhancing this new physics. My favorite Mario, before SMB3 or World.
One huge missed opportunity was definitely the lack of a level maker system. It was a concept in the original, but was eventually scrapped, but later added to its sequels. I was going for it to be in this game, but I guess not.
I played the original game and it was really good. My only problem with this remake is that it removes a lot of the personality that was in the original game. Like in the original game after you beat the final boss, DK would get electrocuted by red electricity and let out the most bloodcurdling scream you’ve ever heard. That was cut from the remake as well as Mario and the toads laughing at how stupid DK is and the toads pushing DK off a building. Mario also doesn’t narrate the credits anymore. The remake just feels a lot more sanitized

I remember when this was first announced, people were whining it wasn't Donkey Kong '94 being remade instead.
I, for one, am glad they didn't. Donkey Kong '94 was peak perfection that I don't think Nintendo themselves could ever replicate.
Yeah I think if they remake DK94 it needs to be a bit more stylish.
Something I was gonna talk about (but forgot) is that DK94 never had star requirements and the 3 items/presents per stage were mostly pointless to collect. So a remake would've actually made that game harder than the original if gave you a purpose to collect them.
Oh, there's no way he would prefer this to the original GBA game. Now excuse me, I'm going to be drinking a large comical glass of water while unpausing my video at 12:03 to see what he has to say.

I don't think it's better than the original, tbh. All of the removed aspects of it ruins the game, and the removed personality ruins the charm.
It's not nostalgia. The original designed everything to flow into each other. The remake in its quest to make it accessible just made a lot of the level design either be filler, or just not a threat at all. So many levels that required thinking in the original can be just cheesed in the remake, because dying means nothing and neither does the timer, so just keep cheesing the levels.
This might be a controversial take, but I also prefer the look of the original. It was very unique and charming. While the remake technically does look better, it also uses a bunch of assets from either Mario Odyssey or promotional material in the case of DK's model. This makes it look as if it was a 2D Odyssey theme for Mario Maker to me rather than Mario vs Donkey Kong.
You are right with what you said in the end, that the original still exists and I can always play it again, which is what I'll do in the future. I'll never touch the remake again.

i think the true problem with the removed score and fall damage, is that the game's levels, as you did state, weren't designed to be as easy. removing lives is fine, but if they weren't going to alter to level design to make the presents either harder to get, or adding a couple more presents that are harder to grab (so like 5 per stage, and making it a little more challenging to get all 5 and still having all 5 being required for a star or something) then they really should've had a TRUE classic mode that had a score and fall damage system. the new content and presentation in this remake is fantastic, but yeah it was made too easy for no good reason or alternative. i'm cool with the better mid-air control i suppose, but again, then the level design should've been altered to accommodate.
being able to say that you think the remake is still better than the GBA original despite not having shit it SHOULD have (like the cute animations and pictures and shit) is pretty impressive. fall damage and a score system should still be options for those that want them, removing content is never great, even if the end result is begrudgingly better overall.
tl;dr i agree with almost everything you said and the video is pretty good. maybe one day nintendo will stop overcharging for remakes and remasters. probably not. greedy fucks.
Excellent coverage G. I vote for some reviews of the Toki Tori series. The original is similar to Mario vs. Donkey Kong in a lot of ways. Toki Tori 2 is its own thing entirely but shares the inspired level design of the original. Both I think would appeal to fans of your videos. Keep up the great work. I've watched basically all of your videos after discovering the channel a couple months ago.
They may have gotten rid of the score system and most of the fall damage, but at least they kept the icicles

Remakes like this are interesting. They add some noteworthy things to them, yet the original has things that the remake doesn’t like the score system.
It doesn’t replace the original, but it provides an interesting alternative experience. I think this remake belongs in that category, similar to remakes like Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania or Pac-Man World Re-Pac.

I was hoping that look back at the beginning would include that one VeggieTales game you reviewed and its bizarre place within the franchise.
Between SMRPG and now this... I'm fully expecting the TTYD remake to feature an easy mode too, on top of making Superguards easier to perform, it's one of the easiest RPGs out there, so it clearly needs that~ x)

As a big fan of the Donkey Kong Country series I've been waiting for years for a new entry. When rumors of a new title hit I was thrilled. Imagine then my disappointment when it was revealed that the new game would star none of the Kongs, but simply be a remake of an old GBA title. I'd have to find this at a $5 sale to even give it a try.
This is a reason why I don't like "leakers" because they set false expectations
There will probably be another DKC game with the next console, don't worry. Seeing as the Switch is nearing the end of its lifespan, it makes a lot of sense that they're (mostly) releasing less important titles and remakes. It's kind of weird that SMBW managed to come out for the Switch and the next DKC game hasn't, but I guess it's up to Nintendo to decide what series absolutely must have an entry on every somewhat successful console.
(Translation: I really hope they haven't killed the series for almost no reason like they did with Wario Land)

All the things you said, I fully agree with. ALL of these nitpicks just rubbed me in such a wrong way, I would'nt recommend it to myself. It is a good and worthwhile remake just not for me and it can't only be the nostalgia for the GBA-Version (I was like 8-10), I played it on my SP recently and it was challenging and fun.
Good thing I own the orginal through the 3ds ambassador prpgram.

I don't mind the changes, I prefer remakes with some bigger differences because a simple graphical update isn't enough to make me buy a game I've had for decades now. $50 for a few extras is still too much though, I agree that they should've just made a new game at this point.

@@murderman8578 There's more extreme remakes like Resident Evil 2, Yakuza Kiwami 2, Metroid Samus Returns. I like them because they're a totally different experience that doesn't replace the original.
I'm also ok with more direct remakes like Mario 64 DS, Metal Gear Twin Snakes, Monkey Ball Banana Mania. There's a lot of stuff you might still prefer in the original, but they play differently and have some extra stuff that is enough to justify the remake.

@@murderman8578 You mean you want remakes I don't like? Bowser's Inside Story, Link's Awakening, Crash and Spyro Trilogy. All they really do is update the visuals. There's usually some small gameplay changes, but they're so similar I might as well save some money and replay the originals. They aren't bad by any means, but their main purpose is to make the game easily obtainable on modern consoles for new players. I want remakes to at least have a good amount of new stuff for old players like the new worlds in Mario vs DK.
