This channel compared to 4WD 24-7 is poles apart, this channel always totally respectable, well produced and narrated, environmentally conscious on the other hand 4WD 24-7 are simply a bunch of environmental vandals with serious alcohol problems who continually butcher vehicles and the environment. Hats off to you and your crew Stefan...well done....
at least im not the only one that sees 4wd 24-7 that way as well. they are a bunch of idiots that are just giving their audience the wrong idea on how to drive. kids will see the way they drive and then recreate it causing more and more 4x4 tracks to get shut down because they are being shredded
yes, Charly and the Bendleby crew were super helpfull otherwise it would have been an interesting recovery trying to pull Defender out with the Cruiser
Hi Stephen, Great video again. I had the same issue with ExplorOz blanking out on Fraser Island. Agree it's a worry if your remote and relying on the App.
great video mate , i cant wait too get back down to bendleby ranges, great to see your daughter getting involved as well, as you say such great memories.
I have been to the Bendlebys a few times in years gone by - usually with our 4wd club and once with some 4wd novices from my work. Billy Goat Ridge has always been the most challenging track but fortunately we always got through - spent a fair bit of time out of the car guiding people through. These days I don't bother - don't need the stress.!!
to be honest in Joachim's case I don't think it was the track as he drove it well material failure and previous abuse was likely the issue for the breakage on that spot. Could have happened anywhere but I do agree for the start of a touring trip you definitely have bigger chance of breaking something on some of the "harder" tracks
Wow, what a recovery! So good to see they made it out, not greatest spot in the world to breakdown. Looking forward to some more cooking tips from Summer's kitchen.🙃
Ive had similar issues with exploreoz maps lately. I don't turn them on often but when I do I'm usually in a no signal area. I have it on multiple devices , head unit, phone and tablet and it advises of an update but then just moves to that blank screen . I did find if I just left it, it would come back and begin to work but with limitations. I can't recall what those limitations were not but it was enough for me to close it with the shits and move over to locus maps. I must admit I have had limited success with exploreoz due to my use case scenario out turning it on when out of data range but this is where I need it after all. I've heard about memory maps but have yet to check them out. cheers
yea I still like EOT Maps and keep using it to check and cross reference but MemoryMaps for all has not let me down once over the last 6000km and given I provided consultancy for it it has a lot of the features I need so it's my number one mapping app at present.
Flinders Ranges is right up the top of my list of places I really want to visit, the terrain there is absolutely stunning, and very unique to the area. What level of modification do you think is necessary for places like the Bendleby Ranges and Skytrek either solo or small groups? I've got a modern IFS ute with good 31.5" AT tyres, rear locker, and winch, what else would you consider a must have?
spectacular places indeed, it always depends on the driver but if you have a 2” lift and some underbody protection and sliders and don’t mind a bit of road building you should be able to do most in Bendleby Ranges, rest of the Flinders is easier
Really..that is BS..such things can happen to any car. Toyota diffs are weak and lockers can help fix that. If you want strong diffs buy a Patrol. Could also have been an axle let go....
A question to the 4WD technical experts: 1. is it possible that traction control is more of a hindrance than help on sand (e.g. in desert). In my limited experience ( sand in middle east) driving in sand requires high momentum and probably TC does not allow high momentum as it constantly applies brake to the slipping wheel. 2. Is it possible that putting vehicle in reverse disables TC, since I observed that if in sand vehicle gets stuck, in reverse gear it can move back.
yes check out my sand driving tutorial TC should be off unless you drive steep dunes with cross axle holes and don’t have enough wheel travel to keep wheels on ground. th-cam.com/video/snQdgMpAKfU/w-d-xo.html
Hello Stefan, thank you for a great video. I am curious to know why you wouldn’t have taken the Deluxe II to use as a base camp? Got to say, the simple camp set up with pre-prepared food looked appropriate and fine. Best wishes
G'day Stephen, I have watched 90% of your videos and they are good stuff. I have a GXL105 that I did a FTE conversion on. My question to you, is did you have to change the rear axle housing to get the 4.2 GVM upgrade? Thanks keep up the good content!
@@mattluszczak8095 late td5s did away with the Salisbury and have the puma rear diff which is why I’m asking. I’m just curious about the failure, but unfortunately, not much is being said. I doubt a Salisbury would break too, but if one did it would be very interesting!
@@AlloffroadAu Charly spoke about it, saying it was just around the corner. It took him a couple of hours to get to me and by then I had managed to roll back down the track. I did however get hung up on a large rock, had to winch myself back up to get free, luckily I had some help from a fellow traveler that offered to spot me back down. One more winch up to prevent me from going over the edge and then I was in a safe spot to remove the drive shaft, turn around and wait for Charlie to tow me out the bottom way with his 79. Then a very slow and clunky drive back to camp.
no mate just a billy on the fire 🔥 or if you can’t make a fire anything to make a kettle of hot water. I don’t think I will ever carry a Induction cooker when camping
yea I like my gadgets in regards to Navigation or my Camera gear but for cooking my Coleman Dual Fuel Burner, Jet Boil and the good old billy over the fire will do for me
My 200 did the link no lift nor lockers needed.... no wheel spin either. The whole place is easy just going down and all the loose stuff is time consuming. Great place but non are actually more then 8 out of 10.
all a matter of suspension travel and what line you take, if you keep contact no wheel spin. For touring Bill Goat Ridge and a few of the tracks are ok and probably most technical in the Flinders Ranges, for play well not much I know in SA th-cam.com/play/PLA2XSq4ONOVJ8Rwi162ElSveB8L9urZ1x.html
So it's true what they say, "If you want to go to the outback, take a Land Rover. But if you want to get back home, better take a LandCruiser." Not a good spot to breakdown, but it's great to have good people wiling to help. I think Joachim owes a few people some drinks or three.
I toured in a similar set up Defender 110 TD5 like Joachim and there where many things I liked about the car however I sold it after 3 years because of the constant reliability issues. I'm touring now for over 3 years in the Cruiser and reliability has never been an issue and the maintenance cost are so much lower. However breaking C/P on the step had little to do with LR reliability just material failure after 300.000 km on the CP and possibly a shock load the car had beforehand. Mind you quite a few people have done damage on that step.
So what was your most memorable recovery? Let me know in the comment section.

thank you mate, yes it’s awesome spending this time with my kids… next trip it’s my sons turn again
Joachim is so lucky to get his rig towed out. That spot didn't look safe to be breaking down on. Good to see everyone was safe.

yes I had that quite a few times now not good if you need the maps, hence I now mainly rely on MMFA and use EOT just as second map.
Another excellent film , really enjoyed it. Glad you could call Thunderbirds "International Rescue"!
thanks Paul yes the Dozer came in handy lol
Absolutely awesome video. Many many thanks !

Stunning location and great videography. Thanks

It was a lovely trip except the Landrover breakdown… makes me worry as I have little experience off road! 😮

no way I would tow for two people I prefer to be more flexible to where I can go and keep in mind we finish trough the Desert
That makes sense. We take our D2 usually to support 3 or 4 others as a base camp.
yea If I basecamp I take the D2 as well but 6000km touring I rather do without towing

Mice getting into my food or more importantly car wiring is my biggest fear. Anyone have any sure fire tips to keep them away?
I’d be interested too. However we’ve been to BR at least 3 times and have never had mice - lucky I guess.
I removed a heap of teeth from my rear crown wheel and pinion in the same spot the following Sunday.
