Can you Game from a Flash Drive?

  • The potential of being able to install and play games from a flash drive is extremely enticing, especially for those of us that travel often or just find ourselves at friends' houses with a gaming computer. Instead of lugging your own desktop around, flash drives have the potential of providing an easier way to take your games on the go or play them from computers without an excess of available storage space. But, is the performance tradeoff worth it?

    Perhaps game companies should sell games on flash drives instead of disks.

      Honestly a good idea

    • @primeoctober
      @primeoctober 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      But why do that when you can run multiple games on one flash drive alone? It would just be messy to have a whole bunch a flashdrives for seperate games each. Plus digital buying is gonna be better anyways cause who wants to wait 2 days on they amazon package

    • @DigitalWraith
      @DigitalWraith 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@primeoctober As opposed to having a whole bunch of discs that take up even more space but can only hold about 50 GB of data? Thumbdrives are smaller and can hold over 500 GB of data. And regarding waiting 2 days for a package, you can always just pre-order the game at the store and pick it up on launch day and take it home immediately.

    • @stevensanchez1192

      @@primeoctober He's not talking about digital games he's talking about disk games, so your entire argument is fairly irrelevant.

    • @stevensanchez1192
      @stevensanchez1192 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DigitalWraith The real issue is the fact that flash drives are easily more expensive than disk not to mention that flash drives do indeed have a failure rate higher than disk. Perhaps in the future when flash drives become cheaper and more advanced, they will take over the gaming company. Plus when you think about it theoretically you should be able to use the flash drives to game on a pc as well as a console, meaning that you wouldn't have to buy two copies of the same game if you wanted a pc/console version.

    I've playing resident evil 3 remake on my 64gb USB flash drive and don't noticed much performance issue even with Reshade used. So, you can play any portable games on it.

      Hi, I wanted to ask if you just move the game files and exe onto a flash drive and then click on it as usual, or is there any additional software to run it?

    i have a piece of shit laptop with very low storage capacity, i was wondering if i could use a flash drive to substitute for more space so i can download games on it, I know i should get a better pc but this is all i got for now and can't afford 100's on a gaming laptop/desktop. do i need room on the actual computer to play these games? Or does the flash drive kind of substitute for the lack of space on my pc?

    I think most of it has to do with the game like skyrim if it is cpu hungry then yes a flash or ssd would be better because they plug directly into the pci express lanes where a hdd requires specific read and writes from the ram ... The same idea applies to smart phones where the ram is not needed because it can use flash nand as a type of ram ...

    I have a 128GB flash drive I bought recently, i am wondering if it would be possible to run the game off the flash drive and pc combined. My laptop doesn't have a lot of space so would there be a way to put the files on the flash drive and then have the computer run them even tho its not technically installed on the computer?
