As the first of the scientists descended on ropes into this strange new world, the light of their headlamps caught the features of a sculpted face on the wall, the Platonic visage set against a backdrop of cracked stone and the dust of centuries. Who was this strange figure and why had he been venerated by so many, so long ago?

Gives the impression of finding a plundered deity's statue in a long disused ruins of a temple. I think it was the Egyptians who said that even the gods must die and that's what I think about listening to this. A god, once triumphant, now lays in ruins; its followers would pray to it in fear, begging for its favour. But its followers made the mistake of thinking it was immortal.
