Kids had so much less pressure in those days. Back then, kindergarten was based primarily on learning through play and preparing the kids for grade school. Today 4 year olds in junior kindergarten are learning how to read, are expected to complete a whole math sheet, and if they can’t read a whole book by 1st or 2nd grade then they’re falling way behind. These kids were so much more mature and better behaved than the kids of today and I wonder if too much pressure (and maybe mixed with not enough discipline) is the main reason there’s so much more disruptive behaviour in schools.
Kindergarten back then was also half day where the kids would only go for a few hours in the morning or a few hours in the afternoon instead of a full 6 hour day like it is now, (and sometimes longer if you count after school programs) which is very tiring for very young children that are only 4 or 5 years old. Our society is also much more fast paced and competitive than it used to be, and even if half day kindergartens were still an option, most kids would still go full day because these days both parents have to work full time in order to afford basic things. Life is becoming too complex and stressful for everyone, especially young people, and when you add that with the psychological damage the pandemic did and social media, it’s no wonder there are so many kids these days who have emotional/behavioural problems and mental health issues, as well as being poorly educated. And yes, poor parenting/no discipline probably also plays a role, in addition to too much screen time and not enough free imaginative play. The world has always had its problems, and the 1960s was not the best era by any means, it was still a much simpler world in many ways than the one we live in today.
As with many kids of their generation, these kids seem very in touch with certain realities of living: talking about house fires, people trapped in elevators, kids being killed by cars and not seeming particularly mystified or frightened by it. Many of the students I teach seem strangely out of touch with the struggles of day to day life.
Kids those days used to play outside by themselves with just their friends and no adult supervision and ride their bike across town and take city transportation without an adult accompanying them. As a result, they knew more about the world at a younger age and were more “street wise.” Kids today are extremely sheltered compared to previous generations and I think that definitely has its disadvantages.
I'm a teacher and I can tell you that the amount of clearance, vetting, media paperwork, legalities, counselling, forewarnings, contracts, etc., etc. (for fear of potential litigation) that would have to be taken care of months in advance in order to have a small film crew in a kindergarten class for an afternoon would dissuade both school and NFB from endeavouring such a verité transcription.. And the idea of NOT telling the kids beforehand - well, that would just cause so much trauma everyone would be beside themselves with panic! It's such a shame. What has become of us?
these kids are about 60 today. sure would love to see an update
2:30 those kids were lucky because I don’t think schools today are allowed to have pets in the classroom!

These kids were so much more mature, calm, and articulate than I was and my fellow classmates were at that age. What happened??

It makes me sad. I don’t know when and where society went wrong honestly.
The kids nowadays would be screaming and yelling in there because you cant beat them because they're parents will sue.
