  • 4 Clever Ways To Repurpose Old Vinyl Records | Before the invention of music streaming and CDs, the record player was the best way to play all of your favorite tunes. After disappearing into obscurity, some vinyl records have recently regained a fair amount of popularity as highly sought-after collectors' items. But if you happen to find any old records lying around in your grandparents' basement that have been rendered useless due to damage, we recommend transforming them into some pretty cool decorative items for around the house.

    ******************************************************
    1. Bookends
First, pour hot water onto the record just below the label over a baking pan, so that the vinyl becomes soft and bendy. Use a cutting board to bend the soft half to a right angle. Be careful not to burn your fingers while doing so. Repeat this method on another record so that you can use them as bookends.
    2. Cake Stand
For this hack, you'll need records in the following sizes: 7 inches, 10 inches and 12 inches. Make sure that the 7-inch single has a small hole in the middle like the other records. Order the records so that the largest is at the bottom and the smallest is at the top. You'll need the rod and holders from a cake stand set to keep everything in place.
    3. Bowls
First place a record on top of an upside-down small glass bowl in the oven. Set the temperature to 300°F to make the record soft. Place a larger bowl on top and wait for around one minute so the record can take its new shape. Once out of the oven and cooled, your old record will make the perfect snack bowl at parties.
    4. Clock
Here's another smart and stylish hack for your unwanted records. If your clock has broken or no longer appeals to you, simply remove the clock's mechanism and attach it to the rear side of a record.

Vinyl record bowls are not food safe You may put wrapped candy or other wrapped snacks in them or if you really want to put chips in them line with a few paper towels or wax paper. Also serving food in a record bowl is a clean up nightmare so line that bowl. Better idea, use a record bowl for keys.

As someone that has dozens, almost all of them have no real value. Lots of people think their grandmas 78s are worth something. They aren’t. Old doesn’t necessarily mean valuable.

@@bh1961us while this can be true for some, like the majority of those produced in the late 30s all throughout the 40s, usually range anywhere from 1-15$ resale value, which at that point i would use the shellac for decoration, as black shellac is very hard to find present day. however as someone who has over 800, id say about 25% of my collection is worth over 50$. one of mine topping out at $2,000. aside from the price alot of the music on these dont exist on digital and are quite good tunes.

This Old Chevy Its not that I don’t care what yours are worth, but more than likely those in the video were thrift store finds that have a value on Discogs for a quarter. You really think that this person destroyed a 78 worth hundreds? No. So If they hold no value and they’re so beat to hell they don’t play through it’s really nobody’s business to tell someone else that their fun is wrong. At least it’s getting a second life and staying out of the landfill.

@@bh1961us i definitely agree with using old ones but one of those by judgement was most likely from the mid 20s and could probably have been saved. I just seek to find these kinds of 78s and restore them and put them on a digital framework, so even if it does get destroyed the audio can last much longer. like i also mentioned the black shellac material these are made from isnt produced anymore and is wonderful to work with if melted down.

Basically the type of vinyl used for records is UPVC, just like that used on modern double glazed windows. It is to all intents and purposes unbreakable, hence why that material is used in both cases. But it should not come into contact with food. A pyrex bowl is more suitable for that purpose.

If a record is to scratched up I see no problem with this. And, it also helps to make the value of other records go up. The less in circulation, the high value of those that are. I have make bowls, clocks, boarders for walls. Each record I have used is someone that no one has ever heard of, or it is to scratched up to use. I get them for free from a store that would throw them away. Good times.
