    The Ukrainian Neptune missile is far superior to Harpoon and CAN be programmed to look for certain ships (by silhouette) and even pick out where on that ship the missile should strike. The French SCALP based ASM can also perform the same trick.

    • @jamison884
      @jamison884 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      The US has multiple missiles with more advanced features (including the feature you mentioned, identifying ships against a database which is a feature on the NSM and LRASM), but the primary issue here is buggy anti-ship missiles in DCS as a whole. I don't believe any anti-ship missile in the game works properly to deconflict between missiles based on the overall targeting area and the number of ships post-launch.
      Besides that, DCS is using an older variant of the Harpoon, and the US is replacing the Harpoon with the Naval Strike Missile going forward as its dedicated deck-launched anti-ship missile (including the modified NSM, called the Joint Strike Missile, which is fired via aircraft or Mk 41 VLS), in addition to a new variant of Tomahawk with greater anti-ship capability. Then there's the SLAM-ER (command guidance data link, infrared and GPS guidance systems), JASSM, LRASM, and SM-6, which are all capable of hitting ships.
      While I agree that Neptune appears to be a great missile, I don't believe they have the quantity available for such an attack, or if they do, they don't want to risk a majority of their inventory. Both reasons would be entirely understandable, particularly manufacturing issues encountered when an enemy is constantly seeking to destroy infrastructure. I believe it's an availability issue in particular, as otherwise, what's stopping them from using Neptune more aggressively since its initial operational success in sinking the Moskva? I do recall one thing though, during the numerous videos and articles reviewing the reported Moskva damage photos, multiple analysts stated the Neptune missiles target the largest RCS area of the ship, which would be the bridge and just ahead/behind the bridge. The analysts noted this falls in line with the impact area shown in the image.

    To get a better spread use a line formation, very widely spread, and shoot the missiles along a wide front. You're using a narrow front and everything comes in from the same vector, so they home on the same ship. You had plenty of time to get into a wide line formation (like one plane per mile) so that your missiles would be approaching from different vectors. The missiles would be more evenly distributed between the targets.

It can fly much more higher altitude than the old AWACS and have a better range because of that, not to mention its new sensors and radars. Some says it can detect a stealth 5th gen aircraft much more earlier than the old E-3 Sentry, also it can defend itself vs amraams. The old version cant really do the same so no more escort needed in order to protect it.

      The problem with AWAC is the RADAR range is about the same (or slightly shorter) than the engagement range of R-37. Yes it's unlikely R-37 could engage a fighter taking evasive action - but it'll steer well enough to track an AWAC sized target. Hopefully Russia doesn't have too many of those - but I suspect they would keep some back for exactly this task if things escalate - they'd be mad not to. Hi! Is it uncommon to attack two locations in modern warfare in one mission squadron? A few mig can deploy AGM88 as the s400 radar is fully exposed while majority aims for ships.
    Also, I wonder HARM can seeks and destroy the radar (in different bands?) on ships. Is the missile designed for moving target on the sea?

    • @gregbarnes4083
      @gregbarnes4083 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thats a good shout, the s400s most dangerous asset is its track radar which needs to stay on for the majority of the missiles flight time, so having a weasal squadron doing SEAD and destroying the track radars would be doing some serious damage.
      Also to answer the question, yes they can track moving radars as long as the source remains active. But for the sake of launching HARMs at ships you might as well just launch ASMs since they have evasive capabilities and can be launched from further away than HARMs.

    • @jamison884
      @jamison884 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In DCS, I'm pretty sure the HARM just hits the last spot it detected radiation, so if a radar was on and operational, it turned off, and it was moving, the HARM would not track it once turned off. Therefore, I'm not sure if it is capable of hitting moving ships with a radiation signature and I'd love to know what it does in the real world.
      As far as a DCS test, I think it would be a pretty cool video to test the HARM against various conditions, such as a moving ground target and both a static and moving ship. However, due to DCS not programming ships in high fidelity, they can't be controlled to turn their radar emissions off to fully test the theory.
      In a real mission as long as Ukraine has the spare Mig-29s, they would probably send them in to take out the S-400. However, this video was just to test the Harpoon scenario. It's quite interesting to see the "mighty" S-400 pretty easily defeated by the gaggle of Harpoons. It fired ~60 missiles with very few hits (if any?), as it looked like the S-400 missiles were losing lock during their terminal approach. I'm not sure exactly why, but I guess the RCS and speed of the Harpoons (plus being in a large group) confused the SAMs.

    Good video. But from what I found, Harpoon is an expensive missile (almost $4M, roughly same price as an S-400 missile). This make this mission $240M just for the missiles! What about trying the same with much cheaper AGM-154? A first flight fires JSOW too low to reach target but enough to trigger missile launch by the S-400 site. Once the site is out of ammo, the second flight climbs higher for the real strike (and probably try to do that before Russian fighters arrive). Of course, this requires S-400 to target AGM-154...

Also, they shouldn't all be fired from the same bearing. Spread it out to make defense more difficult. Using 60 is overkill. Since these can target both ships and land targets, take out some of the infrastructure as well.
