"Concerts exist to create magic moments, to leave the audience with a lasting impression. When I step on stage I keep a clear head, I hear more than I think; and then I just let my ideas flow."
This statement by Claire Huangci is really a promise: the young American pianist born in 1990 to Chinese parents has long since left behind her the role of acclaimed child prodigy who played a private concert for President Bill Clinton at the age of ten and is now an outstanding performer of highly developed artistic maturity capable of captivating her audience every time. She combines technical skill with strong musical expressive power, virtuosic playing with artistic sensitivity. Indeed, this is how she sees her mission: she wishes to "make music that people will remember, not because I have nimble fingers but because the music was so beautiful -- so beautiful, in fact, that it moved them to tears."
Claire Huangci began her international career at the age of nine, thanks to grants, concert fees and prize money -- most recently, in 2011, she was the youngest participant to receive second prize at the International ARD Music Competition. She does say however that for a long time she was not sure what career path to choose. Only in her later teenage years did she finally feel more and more that this instrument was to be her vocation. She says that there was no exact moment when she made a decision; far more, there were many small moments that led up to this permanent, almost symbiotic connection. She received significant input from her teachers Eleanor Sokoloff and Gary Graffman at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, before changing to Arie Vardi at the College of Music in Hanover in 2007.
Frédéric Chopin was a special role model for Claire Huangci, though at first she had ambivalent feelings about the composer. She was initially sceptical about his breakneck Etudes, but fell in love with his Ballades and Sonatas, and it was precisely that music which gave Claire Huangci her artistic breakthrough. In October 2009 she won first prize at the International Chopin Competition in Darmstadt, in February 2010 first prize and all the special prizes at the Chopin Competition in Miami. Such success marked out the 19-year-old Claire Huangci as the most expressive Chopin performer of her generation.
In the meanwhile she no longer gives all-Chopin recitals. Claire Huangci has developed into a flexible and very popular musician. Her unusually wide-ranging repertoire and her great versatility is on display when she plays with orchestras like the Essen Philharmonic, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Stuttgart (under Sir Roger Norrington), the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the China Philharmonic Orchestra, the German Radio Philharmonic of Saarbrücken, the Indianapolis Symphony, Santa Fe Symphony, Moscow Radio Symphony and Istanbul State Symphony orchestras. Her recitals have already taken her to international concert venues like Carnegie Hall, the Tonhalle in Zurich, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Gasteig in Munich, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, la Salle Cortot, Oji Hall in Tokyo and the Symphony Hall in Osaka as well as to festivals like the Bad Kissingen Summer Festival, the Verbier Festival, the Lodz Rubinstein Festival, Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, the Mozartfest in Würzburg and the Schwetzingen Festival.
