They are called jinns. Some people refer to them as spirits or ghosts. They are wrongly taken as deities and gods. Jinns are creations just as humans are. Jinns are not deities or gods. God is only one and Supreme. God is the Creator. God is not creation.
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me. Indeed, it is Allah who is the [continual] Provider, the firm possessor of strength. And indeed, for those who have wronged is a portion [of punishment] like the portion of their predecessors, so let them not impatiently urge Me. And woe to those who have disbelieved from their Day which they are promised. (Al-Quran 51 : 56- 60) He created man from clay like [that of] pottery. And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire. So which of the favors of your Lord would you both deny? (Al-Quran 55: 14- 16) And the Day when He will gather them together [and say], "O company of jinn, you have [misled] many of mankind." And their allies among mankind will say, "Our Lord, some of us made use of others, and we have [now] reached our term, which you appointed for us." He will say, "The Fire is your residence, wherein you will abide eternally, except for what Allah wills. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing." And thus will We make some of the wrongdoers allies of others for what they used to earn. (Al-Quran 6: 128- 129)
