That's for applying wax to the bottom of the foot ring. The next step after is she puts the pot on the conveyor to be glazed. Wax resist keeps glaze from sticking anywhere the wax was applied. It beads up rather than coating the outside and can then be easily wiped away. If there is any glaze still left on the very bottoms then the pots will fuse to the kiln shelf during the final firing. You will see another person take the pot after it has been glazed and slide its base along a wet cloth. That removes the glaze from the wax layer which itself burns away naturally in the kiln.

Perhaps grinding glaze off the bottom, then waxing, to prevent sticking to the shelf during firing.
@@michellebwilson2610 Yep, I bet you are right. They then dunk the whole thing in shiny glaze but the next step is rubbing it off gently with that rubber roller thing. That wax thing looks so odd, I can't figure out what it actually is. Maybe a fireproof cloth soaked in liquid wax?

Yes soil can contain clay, but one talks about soil as the top layer of the ground and the medium in which plants grow and often contains loam, sand and organics. Pure clay is a terrible soil for growing plants and is mined from clay deposits beneath the soil. This is the first time I have ever seen the material used to make pots, bricks and tiles referred to as soil.
