I always felt that whatever the 'gift' was, that I had to give, was worthless....My talent, I suppose is my imagination but could never work out how to give that as a 'gift'; Preferably with a little recompense every now and again. I never had the courage to brighten the day of anyone else, other than myself, with my ideas and imagination. Always made myself smile though.
I shut down, stopped thinking, stopped creating and removed myself from society where I thought I didn't fit. I live as a recluse in the middle of nowhere in a country that speaks a different language, specifically so there would be no communication....I feel alone sometimes but never lonely but try never to disillusion myself with thoughts of what might have been....Those thoughts would hurt too much.
I have a new talent or 'gift' now; I am the invisible man who can survive complete isolation. The very nature of this, unfortunately, allows me not to share this 'gift' with anyone.
This, however, was inspiring to watch, although, it is easier to speak these truths in hindsight when your 'gift' has been a huge success....I don't think that all of us are destined to be great. Sometimes the most mediocre of people can be great in their own small way. I suppose the important thing is to be happy with yourself and be grateful for whatever 'gift' you bring however small and insignificant it may be.
Give your 'gift' though; It may surprise you and the recipient how truly great it actually is.

its a beautiful video, but not everyone has the answers to these questions. For me, i never knew who i really was (and i still dont know it fully) until i was 55. Every single time when a mentor or a quiz test would ask me what did i love doing during childhood, i would say something completely different to what i know now, like 180 degrees opposite. I didnt know for many years that because i had a head injury at the age of 6 months old, when an aunt dropped me from her arms, and because i am autistic, that my brain had to shut down parts of myself in order to survive. I didnt know i needed peace, nature connection and that i am highly creative. I didnt know that i am an introvert who needs quiet and alone time. And i didnt know that i have my own inner way of processing my thoughts through movement (literally moving my hands and body, helps me understand my thoughts and feelings in a sensory way, which is something that i discovered by myself). Just few years ago, if you would have asked me what is hidden in me, i would have just not known all these things about myself. Now i am on a path of self discovery, self acceptance and explorations but its weird to be 60 and learn new things about yourself. I feel that i was lucky enough to transform myself and heal my brain through my perseverence, patience and self love, but it was not easy. If you would have asked me few years ago what choice brings me light, i would surely not have chosen the same things as of today. I would have sabotaged my own wellbeing. So, with all these being said, keep in mind that for some people, even if you think you know who you are. what brings you light and what is hidden in you, you may in fact not be aware of the true answers at all. But, be curious and explore yourself and youll get there. Also, i would add that the speaker, even though she didnt have a supportive teacher, she had a supportive mother (aside from the fact that she already knew from her childhood that she would love to write). My mother did everything she could to suppress my authentic expression, beat me because she thought i am misbehaving and she always used to tell me that i am a failure, just as my father did too. And yet, i could still find the gifts within me, many years later, but it only happened when i detached from my family.

This is a powerful talk. This speech and the recounting of her high school experience makes me think of a personal experience I had. I worked at a Boys Club in college and learned more about fostering grit and confidence in children, adolescents and friends than any other life experience. I think that dovetails with the gift this author shares with us in giving us two questions to discern self knowledge.

If you feel ready and willing, undergo a course of training under a competant teacher, namely, a 10 day silent meditation course in the tradition of Vipassana as taught by S.N. Goenka or any of the accomplished teachers in this tradition. Most arent ready or willing to find out whats actually required to learn how to live life in absolute alignment with the true self and so they never take a step on the path. But of they take but one step, they will feel all the motivation needed to keep walking.
